The judge has been a friend of mine for 20 years, a voracious reader (mostly fantasy and sci-fi) with vision problems that prevent him from playing MMOs anymore. He's not part of the Crowfall community so he is about as unbiased as one can get.

How long did you play Shadowbane? Scouts and Thieves pushed everyone else out of solo roaming PvP because you couldn't get away from them and you couldn't catch them if they wanted to escape. Relying on one class to spot stealthed enemies for the other 21 was a terrible design. It can be forgiven because it was made in an era where stealth mechanics hadn't been fleshed out, but it certainly isn't something that should be heralded as anything close to an ideal model for future games.

I remember one of the devs, not sure who (most likely Blair) saying that skill lines and promotions will largely be statistical changes. Personally I find that boring, so hopefully there's something else as well.

    Active Skill Training

How is CHOICE affected by any of this? The rate of progression / method of progressing choices is what's being discussed. Player Choice is maintained in what's trained, or not trained, yes?

I think its great the judge is anonymous - no pressure on them - or risk of secret private messages from keen writers "there is a hidden meaning in my story - do you get it DO YOU GET IT?!?!" And no chance for anyone to be critical of the judge beforehand and start second guessing them before they even do what is really a very very big favour for us! For me its just a major relief we have a judge at all - cos seriously it is very VERY hard when you read the entries to say definitively what is better - I have my favourites but I cant say for sure if they are "better stories" - or if I just have a preference for certain deities and archetypes, you know? Judging this competition is gonna be hard work so lets give them a break

YACRT (Yet Another Combat Rant Topic)

Money and resources have nothing to do with this at all. ACE already solved the problem the OP is talking about and then ruined it again Back in May when they did split-body animations, this improved combat significantly in its flow. Graphically it wasn't the prettiest but functionally it was far superior. Then a bunch of terribads complained they couldn't keep up, and it "looked funny", and it was "too fast", and so ACE in their infinite wisdom reverted back to rooted combat for some ungodly reason.

    Assassin Archetype

I'm not sure what you mean, but there is a Fae Assassin Archetype, and if ACE does the discipline system well enough, you can probably spec another Archetype into an Assassin.

But then why not FIELD ARTISAN? Extra speed and dodge skills to duck them flying arrows. Pew pew.

    MMORPG Update: Harvesting Reveal

Okay so, I was at work all day and I'm just reading this. I have to say that I'm happy with the direction that harvesting is taking. There are a couple of points that I'd like to push though. For one, I'd like to see more generic harvesting stats across disciplines. If I master mining and lumberjacking, my character should have a bonus to harvesting in the same way that a pvper would get bonuses from training the general combat tree. Right now, general skills are locked and archetype skills do not benefit crafting. It only makes sense to balance the gameplay for non-combatants. Also, the game is designed for team play, you're saying that some nodes cannot be killed by solo players. Is this true even at maximum specialization? Do the vessels have crafting based skill caps similar to combat? Based on previous comments, it feels as though crafting has a hard maximum baked into the skill trees instead of benefitting from vessel quality. Can players achieve comparable skill levels through items and leadership buffs as combat skills? Is it possible to surpass the nodes that are intended for multiple people or is it a game design choice to not allow it at any level? I guess the biggest thing that worries me is that crafting is supposed to be a primary stand-alone profession but, the design of the game seems to force combat. To put it in a different perspective, it would be like designing a game and telling players "you can live as a pvper and never have to craft but, in order to get to the pvp, you have to craft a key to the pvp zone!" Dont get me wrong here, I have fond memories of getting pk'ed in minoc by Nox mages but, it was also your own fault if you weren't prepared. In Crowfall, being unprepared is a feature of the system. Now, I know Im not including the bigger picture so it's not a very fair way to paint the system but, it does raise questions. Also, in regards to harvesting leather from increasingly difficult animals, are you going to give harvesters a bonus to damage against them to balance the skill vs other harvesting skills or do you have to figure out a way to kill the animal and THEN have multiple skinners to combat the regenerating carcass? It seems like it would be an impossible task for an ungeared crafter to kill anything much less something high tiered. Will players be able to tame hard creatures and use them as tanks or breed animals like livestock for food and resources? I need more!

    Active Skill Training

I see a lot of people worried that the passive skill training will be a disadvantage for crafters because of the possible use of secondary accounts. Crafting being my main focus in Crowfall, I'd like to chime in with my viewpoint. To start, Id like to say that originally I was worried about crafting when they announced VIP and it didn't include any bonus for general skills. We then had the introduction of the vessels system which reduced all training to account level and took away the extra character slots from the Kickstarter. Then after comparing the math, I was worried that alt accounts would dominate the market since they were cheaper and they doubled the general training potential. After all of this change, I considered leaving Crowfall but, I always try to understand things from both perspectives. The way I think about Crowfall crafting now is a complete 180 from before. VIP not having general crafting bonuses will force VIP players to choose between crafting and combat skills, which makes crafting more exclusive. Alt accounts may be able to provide the same ability benefits as a full time crafter but, what they lack is focus and the mindset of a crafter. Just like 2 max level characters in WoW, they have the same abilities but, not the same skill. I think of alt accounts as extra people. A person with 3 accounts can only play 1 effectively. These people will never be able to compete financially against the economic powerhouses. Keeping the training fully passive keeps the training curve the same for everybody. The only advantage you have now will be the ability to log in and start training on day 1. I think this is a fair system and it prevents people from spam training the first 20% of every skill to artificially boost their training, years beyond the normal. So I say bring on the alts. Your mains can buy from me when you get tired of account swapping.

The UI improvements that ACE have recently announced certainly seem to be a big step in the right direction. I really liked that we can now freely move around all the different modules and the improvements to the Chat (thank you!) will make everyone's life easier I'm hoping they add a control for transparency for Chat and the rest of the modules too. But 1 step at a time I guess

Hahaha, yeah ... but I'm not at liberty to discuss it with you because of your higher post count. I think a Doppleganger class would be freakin' epic ... but it wouldn't last forever and could cause complete and utter chaos on the battlefield. ... which would be .. AWESOME.

I was checking out the Myrmidon in Action video ACE just posted yesterday. Man that is one BADASS looking Archtype. I think they have done an amazing job on the animations!!!.

I agree! I also like how they are planning on doing major point of interest like lumber mills. I am really glad they went simple and just have the PoI generate materials that anyone nearby can gather. This creates attacks of opportunity by discovering the update ticks for when resources are ready. You may then be able to stage ambushes against other looking to take the resource. I think this creates a much more dynamic and exciting environment that PoI's that you need to capture and control.

Looks like Siege Perilous "technically" starts today for a limited Pre-Alpha group, which means it won't be long for the rest of us to start getting pulled in. Pretty excited to say goodbye to Hunger Dome and hello to a much more interesting battle!

I'm in kind of the same boat right now. I'm dabbling in Skyforge, but also preparing for a wedding soon so my time is pretty taxed. Plus there's a couple of console games on the horizon that I know I'll get sucked into for a while. Just a very boring summer.

Yes, it does seem like numbers are more relevant than we anticipated, with the size of that keep 3. Granted, I am sure in the dregs it will be much harder to maintain such biog structure, without a faction to protect it and all that. But there are many unknowns still. I posted some relevant news in our website regarding our position with the revelations from the video. Quoted below for those who don't want to click the link.

Legend Gaming never played Aion officially, even though a few members (including myself) played it for a while (4 months in my case). I know about the Ascendance process you go through in Aion, but the name of this chapter has nothing to do with that. We created the guild concept first, then the name came after and it fit the basic lore foundation we had established. The idea is that members of Ascendance are believe it is insulting and petty that the Gods keep ressurecting champions to fight in their name in a meaningless war while the hunger eats everything. The leaders of the guild believe the Gods to be incompetent and avoiding the real problem. As such, they want to propel the leader to Godhood (Ascend) so that he/ she can fight the hunger and do what the Gods are too busy to do. They seek to do that in any way possible, but they know that in order to become Divine the leader must first prove his valor and seek domination in battle. Hence the name Ascendance. More info can be found on the "About Us" section of our website: http://www.legend-gaming.net/ascendance/
