Mine personal experience in two screens...
Craftet by lvl 30 Stoneborn full STR Blacksmith AttToDet/Helper Monkey/Armorsmith wihout Bon Tippers. No mercy for newbie crafters. No point to try and no mercy.

So, it looks like in a gathering, you have no point to do anything, while passive tree is leveling? And it's not like EVE. In EVE you can trade/craft something may be not such profitable, but possible to be profitable on a new chars. Sure you isk/hour would be really terrible, but as a result of researching the game as a newbie - you got something usefull, while here - only useless.

I'm incredibly hyped by it. It actually seems to be closer than any MMO I can recall in recent years to achieving the gameplay promises I always wanted in a game! I haven't spent a dime on it yet, but when I see one of those backer cosmetic sets I really dig, I'm probably gonna make the leap finally.

As has been said, the EK system is one of the last things to be adressed (due to the focus on finishing the PvP aspect of the game first). And we don't know yet what the developers finally will come up with in detail.
We have some hints, though (but no guarantees).
In the early tests we were able to keep our EK's open 24/7. The actual benefit was extremely small, though. In average about 3 EK's established serious market places or crafting hubs, while far beyond 100 EK's were kept open by their owner without any beneficial use but just to visit. The company tested some stuff and then, as an interim solution during testing,  decided to include a time-out mechanic that would log out inactive after a minute and close the EK down once the last player left. At that time they didn't have much money and paying servers for no real benefit to the testers or the company or the game development would only have pulled money away from development.
This issue wasn't new, though. They quite early said that they somehow would have to find a way to connect EK's with some kind of cost. Simply because EK's will produce costs over and over again, while the players would usually only buy the game once. One possibility they thought about was to allow EK's with more VIP citizens to stay up longer.
They agreed to our opinion that having only the monarch being able to launch an EK would cause a lot of issues. As far as I understood, they planned to at some time allow at least Nobles of an EK to launch it, too.
Meanwhile vendor thrall slots were added to the God's Reach temples, leading to even the Big Five finally shutting down their EK's, for more than a year now.
Only recently the team publicly confirmed that they are aiming to put trading back to the EK's. This, of course, could only work with a system that allows those, who are interested in providing a hub of any kind, to provide them adequately for their audience. What they do have in mind to let us do this ... we don't know. And with the "we will only tell you once it's done" policy, it's unlikely that we will get many info drops before we finally get there.
All we can do (well, some of what we can do ) is to provide our feedback and to make suggestions ... and not to falter in pointing out our needs and wishes ... again and again ... just like the more PvP focussed players.
    Have fun, good luck

Here is a summary of my experience with crafting as a new player.
I first got really interested in crafting after the NPE quest that gets you to make a ring. That's when I started to see how interesting the crafting system could be, with the experimentation, item naming, etc. I decided I wanted to make heavy armor and weapons, since I like playing tanks/tanky healers. I did some research online, read the stat tips in game, etc, and rolled a new stonebreaker champion, putting all points in strength. Note that all this actually took quite some time because there is so little information either in game or on the web atm.
I changed my passive training to crafting, leveled up, got a blacksmithing major disk, and a minor disk that lowers crafting difficulty by 5. I started off making a intermediate greatsword but from memory the assembly etc for that relies on general crafting so my blacksmith was just as bad at making it as my other toons.
Then I decided to make a breastplate and an advanced greatsword. I made a spreadsheet to determine all the materials I would need: 60 iron, 120 other ore, 18 coal, 6 hide, 3 meat, 20 dust for the breastplate; 180 ore, 18 hide, 28 dust, 1 weapon form for the greatsword. I got everything together (took several hours obviously) and by this stage my passive training had advanced to the second pip of blacksmithing in the basic crafting tree.
The big moment arrived when I was finally ready to craft my gear. Pretty much two full days of preparation for this. I started with the breastplate, but got stuck at creating metal sheets. For some reason iron-iron-iron or iron-copper-copper didn't work. I asked on the forums and got a hint that I should try other ore combinations. After another couple of hours of mining tin and silver I was ready to go again.
Drumroll ... my first breastplate. Very nice. 88 armor, wow. What's that? Its weaker than the vendor bought armor that costs 500g or something. Ouch. Well at least my advanced greatsword ended up being marginally better than the vendor bought one!
By the way, I have skipped all the angst I had with the leatherworking and the inevitable missing component that saps another 30 minutes out of your life to go and find.
In short, I think the system has amazing potential, but the finished product should be about twice as good considering the effort it takes. I also hope this write up gives some perspective as to what type of experience a player new to the game faces in terms of crafting, keeping in mind that I was extremely determined and did considerable research to achieve even these basic first steps in crafting.

EKs can currently only be woken up by the Kindgom owner. Leaving them up and running all the time eats up a lot of server space which ends up costing a lot of money.

Is it true that if I am offline, no one can enter my EK? If so, the EK is even dumber than I thought. What's the point of setting up merchants in there if people can't get to them?

If this is the case what is the benefit of EKs?

As someone new coming in during the beta this is an actual question. The EKs were something I was interested in but I'm not sure what use they are in game outside of cosmetics.

seventhbeacon reacted to checkyotrack in cloak and dagger moderation went sour?
Well, the forums are dead and the community has been horribly mismanaged by ACE. It was directly marketed to the Shadowbane crowd. Play 2 Crush was thrown all over the place. What happened when the Shadowbane community entered the forum? The moderation was locked down tight. XcomVic was brought on as moderator and was absolutely terrible at his job. In the first month a good portion of the community were dejected. It would go downhill from there. The Report system was constantly abused and despite many reports being without merit they were still acted upon. Doc Gonzo, who was the best moderator on this forum was removed causing a further rift. It was a debacle the way that was handled.

The forums eventually became pay to post because nothing fosters a community like making them pay money to have discussions. Later anonymods were introduced and people were making alts to get in and chat logs came out showing that IPs were being compromised by trolls who were able to become anonymods. That breach was never addressed. However, anonymods were only able to see IPs for a little while. Moderators no longer can.

So, after 10 months of harsh moderator action, continuous mishandlings, and repeated debacles the community is dead. 95% of the Shadowbane community who were excited about this game do not want nothing to do with it anymore.

ACE has no interest in loosening their moderation policy, and I believe it'll ultimately be to their detriment, but that's OK. People are just wrong sometimes. It's totally possible we who'd prefer looser moderation are wrong instead, I'd say. Not a 100% clear issue.
Apart from the discord server, perhaps the solution lies in the recently developed chrome extension "Dissenter"? It has some pretty clear advantages over a community forum hosted elsewhere, which will run into the usual coordination problem when starting up. It may not catch on either of course, but I think it'd have a better shot than any 'elsewhere' forum.
Technically it'd all still be happening on the same forums we're on now, URL wise, but would be completely unmoderatable and with no possible reprecussions by ACE, as they have no way to verify the identity of any commenters on Dissenter. I could simply post a comment posing as mandalore right now spouting every racial slur in the book, for example. You could make a thread about <HATED GUILD>, and make the post on these forums filled with only G-rated praise; the Dissenter 'mirror' would contain the real, assumedly vitriolic post. Hopefully this post is not itsself against the rules, but I figure it's pretty much like hosting a community forum elsewhere except more streamlined and effective in every way. It effectively just makes the controversial stuff 'opt-in'.

necromancy is an advanced profession for creating player character bodies ('vessels') with higher stats & power potential. you would use the items to create a new character.
    more late game guild co-ordination.
fine to pick the nethari even if you don't do necro.
a necromancer crafters requires the following support:
    - runemaker crafting of advanced tools (shovels & picks)
    - advanced *group harvesting* of 'mothernodes' resources for minerals (e.g. Foreman discipline) cannot be solo'd.
    - grave digging harvester
    - alchemy crafter

Dipping my toes back in after ~5 years. Looking to see the lay of the land and what people are up to and enjoying. My interests are across the board on the categories, but I also want to favor some over others when it comes to guild play. Crafting, RP, casualcore PvX. Happy to participate in PvP, though not sure which ring would end up being most interesting. Now that Beta is about to happen, I'm definitely eager to see what the game offers and what changes have occurred since the original stated goals/pitches.

Region: US East Schedule: Work from home for now, evenings best. Casual/Hardcore?:  CasualCore (I'm not afraid of a challenge, but I'm also not as twitchy-fast as I used to be. ) Play-Style: For Crowfall? Not sure yet. Commitment: Consider me on a trial period with the game, but as an enthusiastic backer I'm invested in its success and want it to be a game I enjoy sticking with! RP?- Yes, prefer organized plotting over "tavern chat." Experience:
Everquest, Galaxies, WoW since Vanilla, regularly again since Legion (still play), STO (occasionally dip my toes into), SWTOR (when I do go back it's usually for the story content)

Hello everyone - how is the game doing?  I've not checked in for years - how is gameplay? Did crafting ever go past magically appearing pick and there's a node? How is the community?

A good friend reminded me about this game and how immersed I was in the possibilities back when it was just a lil kickstarter.  I spent a lot of time on these boards arguing (a token squishycore amongst the elite) and writing endless stories (crowfall chronicles still holds up though it's been half a decade!) and I met some really wonderful people.  How goes everyone?

Region: US West Coast - PST Schedule: Flexible Casual/Hardcore?:  Casual killer.  Hardcore healer. Stop judging me. Play-Style: Squishycore.  Snackcake.  Loves crafting and healing.  That's right.  I know I'm playing the wrong game.  Come at me bro. Commitment: Oh I dunno, I guess I'm into it.  Sorta want to trick out my EK so I can have the best stores in the game all gathered in one place and be able to provide uberduber gear to my guild while I rake in gold that I then throw at crafting until I'm a goddess of all things made.  Kinda want to go sneak around in the campaigns with a few stalwart killers by my side as we rifle through the mats available then go back to base and trick everyone out. RP?- Depends.  Experience:
SWG, Warhammer, Age of Conan, LOTRO, FFXIV.  Did kickstarter. I keep checking back and seeing how this game is doing.  I think it's time to guild up.
