    What about the players that play at the beginning, leave for a while, and come back? Is the game going to track time not spent passive training? Or is it simply if you start playing X days after launch you get Y active training?
     
    It sounds a bit cumbersome in either case, and encourages players to grind rather than play, which I think is a bad thing.
     
    I think a mentor system would be better. A player can mentor any other player who has trained less than they have. The mentoring will increase the rate by which the other player trains, but the trainee can never pass the trainer.
     
    So if I have a total of 2000 points trained and someone new comes along, I can mentor that person. 6 months later, I may have 3000 points and the other player 2000, but they are catching up. Like you said, the exact numbers can be tweaked.
     
    A mentor can only have one trainee and a trainee can have only 1 mentor. The benefits can be limited based on skill trees, so that in order for someone to get faster training in crafting, they have to mentor with someone who has trained crafting. It could even be limited based on specific crafting profession/archetype. You want to train faster to be a necromancer? Mentor with a necromancer. 
     
    Personally, I think that's a more elegant solution. It doesn't add any need to grind and it creates more social interactions.

    Crowfall team,
     
        I highly recommend development of a mobile app for Crowfall in conjunction with a web character portal.  The primary selling point of the app could be:
     
    1.) Skill training convience
    2.) Campaign status
     
    The first feature would add convenience and ease of use found in modern day gaming and should appeal to much of today's audience.  The campaign status would allow for those who are interested or really involved in their campaigns to see how they or their guild are doing.  Here are some other features you might want to possibly include:
     
    1.) Character paper doll with stats
    2.) Possible mini-game (good for prior to release for hype build)
    3.) management of eternal kingdom
    4.) Guild chat (possible bandwidth hog)
    5.) Bank/Inventory interface
    6.) Links to current news/patches
    7.) Security token key generation for account security.
     
    Obviously you need to account for scope creep and KISS (Keep It Simple Sailor) is often the best approach.  Especially since you don't want to overwhelm people with a new product.  In my opinion I think such a mobile app/webpage portal could help drive the game's hype train and add an appeal to the player base.  Thank you for your time and good job so far I am looking forward to the game.

    The problem you're trying to solve is a deliberate design choice. ACE wants and has planned a system where you cannot gain power faster by grinding harder.

    You absolutely must offer a web interface and smart phone app so that we can follow/change our skill training while not in game. This of course would be a VIP only feature. I could see that being a big selling point for people.
     
    Based on your demographic research you know that your backers have jobs, families, etc. but are also competitive gamer's who will want to maximize their training time. If I'm going to finish training a skill while I'm at work I'd love to be able to switch to the next skill while at work. I would PAY EXTRA to do that. 
     
    Think about it. 
     
    Going to post this in the suggestion box also.

    Super good news everyone! Since the release of the skills system in alpha, we now have a list of basic crafting skills! Here's a link to the crafting skills thread. I will develop it more as information comes out.

    Vagantem here, I am looking forward to the hype and the game.  For me the hype is generally as fun if not more so then the game itself.  I like to wander from MMO to MMO trying them out to varying degrees.  I still have fond memories of being a thief/puller in Shadowbane.  Be interesting/nice if something of that nature exists in this game.  I like anime, reading sci-fantasy, playing MMOs, and old school RPGs.  Best of luck to everyone and pardon the lack of a good introduction I'm going to finish off my chicken noodle soup now, dislike viruses.
