elaborate: a group with a leg has a competitive advantage over a group without one simply because they can regen hps faster both in combat and out of combat

i'm sure you can 'do fine' without one in the hunger dome in some scenarios, but in general it would typically be preferable to have a leg in the group simply for their healing capabilities...especially once you push inside the keep.

for sustained combat, the ability to regen hps faster than  your opponent(s) is a huge combat multiplier.

I was actually looking forward to an environment where a dedicated healer was not a requirement...

    i'm currently not seeing it.

we have replaced the 'dedicated cleric' with a 'dedicated medic'.

i'm not sure how many other archetypess will have healing abilities similar in nature to the legionnaire, but...as is the healing provided by a legionnaire in the hunger dome environment is pretty much a requirement. I'm not sure what we're seeing right now is that much different than the current status quo...less efficient for sure, but not that much different from a group dynamic perspective.

Besides commenting on balance right now is rather pointless, I don't see any problem? This spell is 3 combo deep. You need to commit to it and thus the high damage is warranted imo.

AND THE guy getting killed over and over could be completely legit.

bob has been trying to do an embargo run every day at 6pm for the past week...and every day i've been killing him and taking his stuff...i'll be there waiting for him every day at 602 until he brings enough folks to stop it.

it's not griefing to kill someone who has something worth taking...and refuses to do anything but die.

what is your definition of griefing?

    this:

is the pretty typical thou shalt not TOS speech...

which is not what most people think of when they start screaming griefing.

So...what is the developer definition/idea of what constitutes one griefing another?

    /agree with Mourne.

SB could have made formations quite a bit more useful, even in just movement...if, for instance the position in the formation would have been defined by class, and those positions would have been varied by the formations selected...basically the formation would have toggled a formation specific buff, that broke on combat action or group leader breaking...buff would persist for like 5 seconds after formation break...

For instance, the column formation is a typical travel formation when combat is not effected...it would have been just the natural 'fall in, move' formation, and ideally would have granted a movement buff while that formation was active.
on the other hand, the wedge formation is a classic 'trolling for combat' set up, that presents solid defense/reaction ability to all sides...where your high value members are tucked safely in the middle...again, would have been nice to see  the columns movement buff replaced with a defense or resist buff.

i also don't have any problem with the autofollow stuff...i know it sets the stage for keycloning...but isn't 1 toon:campaign already going to significantly address that? The convenience/organization aid that goes with addressing group leaders (who in turn control their groups) is huge, especially when dealing with complex, protracted engagements like sieges or long term grab and hold ops (like poi control).

the zerg can be managed/exploited to some degree in skirmish. they can be spread out, kited, be made to overextend. I don't know that an aoe spell would be any more unbalanced that a 7 ft angry woman hacking at your face with a pole arm.  The power of the zerg is in set piece battles where they can mass, and you just can't get through the mass fast enough.

and i am talking about player ability, not seige weaponry...anti personal seige weaponry is a tough one to balance...sb experienced this when mangonels were buffed for a period and could wipe out groups pretty much before they could even close distance.

with regard to the aoe spell...you don't make the uncapped spell the 'most damaging'...it's a middle of the road aoe whose upside is that it hits everyone. One caster lobbying it solo is going to do jack...it's very much a combat multiplier where 20 could force 60 to change their tactics (especially if elevations = range advantage) obviously the 60 could use the same tactic back, but then it would be all about the move counter move.

I really think the best your going to get here, is something that forces groups to spread out...or suffer significant pain...so if that's the goal...KISS.

one very simple mechanic that would limit large concentrations of toons is not capping aoe damage. whether or not it scales...this puts kind of a theoretical max level of efficiency for an aoe volley.

ie. if ice storm does 500 pts of damage against a fully resisted target, and the average player has 7,500 hps, /does basic math, i need 15 aoe toons to pretty much one shot anything in the effect radius (well probably 20, overkill, account for lockups, whatever) on a timed volley.

At this point it would matter if you brought 1 or 100, if you stacked in range of my aoe troops, you're all going to die on the count of 3, 2, 1, drop.

of course to counter that you're going to disburse to mitigate the aoe damage, which makes the larger force vulnerable. to smaller elements working the flanks.

This doesn't hurt the little guy any more than the big guy...20 players is 20 players...it just penalizes the stupid and the surprised.

The problem with what you're calling for is that will eliminate all other tactics. Hmm. do i spec around the skill that instagibs anyone in a 10 foot radius, or do i spec around the one that hits for 50 damage.

players naturally gravitate towards the strongest/most dominant abilities/tactics. If something is consistently more effective than anything else (or even just perceived that way) players will, in very short order use it to the exclusion of all else.

but. to be constructive...how about this...

    ChainBomb.

Each cast cost 25% of the casters life pool.
Each target takes damage equal to [something not horribly painful]
Caster receives 1% of [something] back.
Each successive target in the target area takes 30% more damage (caster hps replenished after this modifier).
There is no cap...the idea is that damage would increase exponentially and be real devastating beyond a certain point.
The effect radius would be pretty small, not designed to hit half the battlefield.

For a game with no 'firehose healing' a 25% health hit may (or may not, but the idea is that it would) be pretty severe.

But drop that on a stack of 50? wouldn't want to be 20 -->50.

any downside? besides for folks that want to put large numbers of players into small patches of space?

i'm also a huge fan of the non-group/self friendly pbaoes (ie. sentinel big bomb) as a combat equalizer...where one player getting through the line can take out dozens.

anything you can do to the zerg, they can do to you.

personally i'm not a big fan of 'quicker combat...but that's besides the point.

it is a mistake to assume that the zerg is a stupid monster that wont adapt to different mechanics.

First, large 'legacy guilds' that form the backbones of most early/post release zergs are highly organized...and not stupid. While they do tend to lack some (a lot) of the high level specialization and tactics that you'll find in the smaller 'pk guilds', they will adapt to, 'uhhh duuhhh hey fred, if all 10 of us stand here in this here spot we are gonna get wtfpwnzord'...'gud thinking bob, we should spread out so we dont die so quick...' there. now, god forbid that ye old l337 small guild stand together (in whatever number) and takes the aoe shot. ouch.

Second. I'm not sure what you're going to accomplish...i mean KGB/PRX/SIN/Whoever...they each have hundreds of members. Members that will play. They will not break up. And if you implemented a mechanic to limit guild size...well see above, they'll make more and work around it in voice comm (kgb1/2/3). The zerg is going to be here...any mechanic that will limit their ability to dominate will need to tie to the meta game (how do you control territory/resources/etc) and not tactical issues (BECAUSE THEY WILL USE IT TO THEIR ADVANTAGE).

As to why I don't like it...I'm Up-I took a fireball the face-i'm dead...that's not exciting for me. It's moderately amusing if i'm the one chucking the fireball...but definitely not exciting. Moves, counter moves, time to change tactics midstream and impact the course of a battle, that's fun.

hehe emulator was a joke...it was a sad reflection of what once was...altho entertaining for bit, from a nostalgia standpoint. The emulator gameplay/competition wasn't near what it was over the last few years of live. it was also 'lesser' since there were no politics, as there was no convincing anyone about anything, it was pretty much a 2 sided factional environment...which wasn't sb's strength.

and your assumptions are also misplaced...

for instance a fair number of my folks were part of the prx uber alliance that played round and round we zerg (TO GREAT VICTORY!!!) in GW2...same thing with AA (although admittedly that grind killed our interest pretty fast).

But back the the 'reminisce' bit...

What sb had, that no other game has had since...and why it held some of us for so long...is proof of your performance. you played for stuff that real people put real effort into building. it wasn't some rotational keep or point that gave some arbitrary point total. You either either seiged/defended successfully, or you didn't... you can say what you will about competition and all that, but every other game that has come since has been 'easy mode'...since you never really lost, or even if you did 'lose', you didn't actually lose anything.

sb was really the only game that has required skill at all levels of the gaming spectrum- individual, tactical, strategic, operational/logistic, and political.

Hopefully cf will recreate some of this...as i'm really tired of waiting for something to not suck after the shiny wears off.

It truly is more complex than my example, I do not dispute that.  However, can we not agree as MMO players that minimizing gear advantage benefits the game?

Large gear disparities occur in games that promote end-game grinding.  "Players need something to reward their renewed subscriptions... hmmm...  I know! A new tier of gear--that's the answer (and it always is the answer)!"  Crowfall by design, presumably, will not promote end-game grinding--at least not to the extent a game like WoW or Archeage does.  There is a middle road between GW and WoW.  Give me gear advantage, but do not make it so extreme as to become THE inevitable deciding factor in the outcome of most combat.
