Exatamente e eu acredito que por estarmos em um servidor onde nossa lingua não é a dominante, isso faz com que os próprios brasileiros interajam melhor entre si.

Nosso clan possui 26 brasileiros.

The judge has been a friend of mine for 20 years, a voracious reader (mostly fantasy and sci-fi) with vision problems that prevent him from playing MMOs anymore. He's not part of the Crowfall community so he is about as unbiased as one can get.

“The cold, the blood cold that came when winter decide to make us a visit along with only Valkyn´s knows how much Hunger infected and here I am, tracking a traitor along with my buddies some hours before the end of the world, yep, intense right?”

-Hey Halt, are you getting rusty? I could do that faster you know?

“And that’s Brook, one of the youngest and of course, the dumbiest guy that I know but I can’t say the same about his skills with the bow. Yep, he can shoot a drunk fly that are fifty meters away and that’s the reason he is here.”

-Blood no! I don’t want to get lost in the woods right in the end of the world! Make me a favor and go scout ahead.

“And that’s the tale about how i dint kill myself.”

-Don’t be harsh on him, he just want to impress you, give him a chance, okay?

“Silver hair Diana, that´s who´s talking right now. She and I go way back and I can trust her with my back.”

-I can give him a chance later. Now we need to find Bart, that blood traitor that stole our relic and he better wish that Yaga already collected his soul before I get to him and…

“Before I could say anything else I found the track of the bastard. Some kindling were broken close to a bush and that was all I needed to know the direction that he had gone. I raised my hand making a sign of attention to the other two rangers that without losing time started to go ahead into the forest but in separated ways, hiding themselves in the shadows so that we could corral our target.”

“It took me one hour to find a clearing that showed signs of a recent battle, there was some footprints and cuts in the trees nearby. Some bodies were scattered around, most were remains of wild animals and some meters away leaning on a tree was Bart treating a wound in his stomach but something was wrong, he was alone. Were the enemy that caused that wound was? But before I could understand what was happening, Brook appeared in the clearing with his arrow in the bow, ready to shoot Bart at any moment but before he did that, he said:”

-End of the line traitor, give me the relic and I may kill you without any pain.

“After hearing his ultimatum from the mouth of Brook, the Guinecean got the relic from the bag that was resting right next to him and threw it at the snow, some maters away from Brook´s feat”

-I will die from this wound anyway, i don´t need that anymore…

“That appeared to have surprised Brook that started to walk to get the relic but in this moment I understood what was happening, the snow in front of the place that the relic was had a slightly different shape from the rest but I was too late relay this information. Brook’s feet touched the place and then he fell in a hidden hole and after that I could only hear a scream asking for help and that made me go out of my hideout only to see the boy and seven humanoid Hunger infected fighting to see who would eat Brook and at the same time Bart got the relic back and begun to run away, I could shoot him but he knew I couldn’t abandon Brook like that and then I shouted to Diana”

    -Go after him!

“I could hear the noise from leaves moving and that was Diana going after the Guinecean and Valkyn knows how I wanted to be the one to kill that bastard but I had a job to do and to prepare myself for that I recited an old motto from the rangers”

-When there is nothing left but the graves and the ice and the Hunger… We go back. We go back for those too stubborn, too dumb or too weak to leave…

“And I let my arrow loose right in the heart of Brook, of my friend that I had to put out of his misery because some lowlife decided that his life was more important and to show that he was wrong I restarted the hunt”

The problem is that there was less than two hours of sunlight and this world would last at least more seven hours so we needed to take care of this problem faster. While I was thinking about our time limit, a red flame appeared in the sky, that was a sign used by our group to transmit our location and normally we don’t use because this draws too much attention, so if Diana decide to use it, something went really wrong.”

*Might be a slight exaggeration - but noone ever died for that amirite?       [Competition Closed - Entries to be announced]     Announcing the www.crowfallRP.com Epic Short Story Competition!   Open 03 September - 31 October 2016      ____________CURRENT ENTRIES____________     A pig! Some kind of ... fluffy? pig. A pack pig package in fact! Probably useful in some capacity. $10 value!     Adorable! This pig could be yours!                 Rules & Judging Details:   Entries must be submitted by 31st October to the RP section and clearly titled or prefaced as a competition entry. You chould also link to it here from this thread or submit it at CrowfallRP.com or message me. I will also update this post with links to new entries to make it easy to read them all.   All entries should be original works by a single author who is also a member of this site. Entry by proxy (for a friend) is not allowed. (We don't want to be worshipping false writers).   One entry per author please!   Once you post your story on the RP section further editing is NOT ALLOWED (And may lead to disqualification).   Entries will be judged according to originality and creativity.   Please keep the language and content away from NSFW territory. Content is of course subject to the Crowfall forum guidelines for language and behaviour. Its OK to allude to Game of Thrones levels of naughtiness - but don't be too graphic.   Illustrations can be used but must be original artwork by the author. It is at the judges discretion to allow arkwork to count towards final scoring (For example its likely a graphic novel or comic format would be allowed).   I've cheekily asked for help in the judging. We want judging to be transparently fair and impartial. Stay tuned for more details on that.   Closing date for entries is the 31st of October (Halloween!) and I hope we can announce our winners by the 5th of November (Cos its Guy Fawkes night and symbolism is neato!)
    Dislaimer:

This is a privately run competition run by a fan for the kicks and giggles. Artcraft Entertainment are not responsible for the prizes or the fallout if it all explodes in my face.

Www.crowfallrp.com is an amateur non-profit fan site. I am an amateur non-profit fan. No unicorns were hurt yet in the making of this event but frankly we can't rule it out.
Please consider the whole thing a fan effort and please don't get antsy if we hit hiccups along the road. If you have a habit of antsyness this competition might not be for you.

    What's in it for me?

I would like to help build the RP community. This is a very selfish interest as I then get more people to roleplay with. I would like to draw attention to our new RP community site www.crowfallrp.com which only has 2 members as I write this (In fairness it might be the site colour scheme scaring ppl off). Other stuff:
Authors retain all rights to their works - If you write something great I would love to use your stories (with full accreditation) as lore for an Eternal Kingdom I am making called Rhime. Stories will be a big deal there. Please tell me if you *don't* want your story used in this fashion. Writing about crowfall stuff requires Artcraft permission cos its their license. Please don't abuse their generosity in allowing us to dfo this sort of thing. The Nightmare and the piggy have KS /they will be gifted from a KS package). Competitions are fun. Good luck!

I did already spam her but tbh I think its important the devs keep focusing on the game She gave me some great advice on possibile judges.

At this rate we might end up with 20 or 30 entries and I think it would take a day or 2 to do a proper judging job if thats the case. The roleplayer in me would be happy but..the gamer in me would be kicking myself for pulling a dev off the job

I've reached out to a really good published writer.
I think if we can get someone with real writing experience from outside CF community it would be awesome AND fair.

    Hat, ring, tossed.

It's a bit tricky to really noodle into the lore without a lot of lore to noodle into. Especially as I'm definitely interested in the Stalker archetype and the Elkin race in general and there is precisely zero information there... But as long as things are left as basic character interactions (read: combat) anything will probably fall within the realm of plausibility as we learn more.

    =================================== Transition =================================

    =================================== Transition =================================

“It dint take too long for me to find the direction the two had gone because Diane left traces for me to follow.

    =================================== Transition =================================

“I arrived in a place close to a giant tree, for one second i lost my focus and stopped there, gazing the majestic tree, maybe she could even be one of the trees of life that drank from the blood of Gaea, that´s the only thing I can think of to explain this anomaly. It was like I was in a trance but then I got out of it when I found the tool used to shoot the flare and right next to her was Diana lying down on the snowy ground without consciousness and when I got close to her I heard a sharp sound and I felt a slightly warmth coming from my left leg, it was my blood…”

-Ha! You were wrong when you thought that I was the pray, because I am the hunter here!

“From the ground appeared the Guinecean with his pistol in hand. He was hiding underground, damn Bart and his rat little tricks. I need to forget the pain in my lag and shoot him before he can even think of escaping, let me just get one arrow.”

    -Arrr…

“Before I could finish the job, Diana hand grabbed my injured lag and started to pull in her direction and when she raised her head, I could see the bluish color coming from inside of her mouth and a mark of a shot in her forehead, she was not Diana anymore, she was just one more of the slaves of the hunger…”

-Sorry to say, my bullets were bathed in the blood of some infected beasts and let me tell you one more thing before I let you and your girl have some private time, the bullet I shot you is the same! Good luck with that!

“Before I could even think about the bullet I had to get free from Diana´s strong grip and for that I used the arrow i was going to use to kill Bart and I stuck her in Diana arm and that’s did the magic, her grip got loose and I put some distance between us only to see that the sound from all the commotion started to call the other infected beast that were nearby. I did the only thing I could do, I used all my arrows to minimize the number of enemies, then I used my twin blades to kill anyone who dared to come near me but my stamina was ending and the loss of blood caused by the gunshot made me weaker, I couldn’t even run because of this damn leg and was only a matter of time before I succumbed. I started to take steps back until my back leaned on the giant tree trunk and then I noticed, the hunger stopped near the tree, more like they were struggling to reach me but some type of invisible barrier dint let them.”

-It appears Gaea took a like to me, now I can… Rest a little…

    =================================== Transition =================================

“Wen I woke up I could only see the darkness in front of me, the tree was emitting a small glow and that was sufficient to let me see that my skin was losing color, maybe in some minutes I will die and I will never be able to get Bart, he will live like nothing happened… Tears, I can only cry in my last moments.”

    -Sorry guys… It’s the end of the hunt, I couldn’t get him…

“That´s when I noticed a light appearing in the forest and that was coming closer, it dint take long to understand that it was a deer, one with shining horns it seems, and now he is front of me, staring at me.”

-Do you desire to continue your hunt?

“A voice, I can hear a voice, but there is no one nearby besides the deer and he is not moving his mount, not that a deer can speak.”

-I ask again, do you desire to continue your hunt?

“It was speaking with me directly in my head, it was the deer… No, he is more than that, maybe I am crazy but I think this is D´orion, son of Arkon, if that is true, maybe I have a chance of revenge and with that in mind I shook my head as I accept.”

-Then know that your soul is mine, you will hunt in my name, the entire universe is my hunting ground and you shall be one of my champions.

“After saying that, the deer touched my chest with his nose and then everything changed, I don’t feel my limbs anymore, but now I have wings, I am a crow.”

    =================================== One year later ==============================

-What this guys know about relics!? They don’t know how much trouble I had to take this with me! They want me to sell her for a cheap price, preposterous! Tomorrow I will find a decent buyer.

“Said my prey when he entered his room. I can hear his footsteps, he is going to the bed. I already know where the bed is, the last weeks I watched my prey routine, I know the position of every single mobile in his nest, its time. I get my bow, I get one arrow, a thick one and I put her in the string, I pull the string, I must use the right amount of strength… I shoot and my arrow pierce the roof and find my prey, right in the heart, he is dead.”

    -I think that is mine…

“I am inside his room now, I entered from the hole I opened in the ceiling and I am claiming my prize, a relic that I wish I never found in the past, but now she is mine again. I am no longer a human, now I am a Elken, I am a slave to the gods and I don’t regret nothing, because now I can hunt again.”

    The Threat of Whispers

The city I found myself walking towards was uninspired, drab and overcrowded. I could tell even from this distance that people from all over had fled here in great numbers, fleeing from the chaos of the surrounding land. Masses of people pushed into the city, and guards watched over them looking for threats.  Making matters worse, a huge storm front could be seen rumbling in the distance. It had sent clouds rushing ahead of it, overcasting the afternoon and causing gusting winds to blow ahead of it. Much of the public had been sent rushing about to complete last minute business before it struck.

I had been watching this particular city through contacts and our spy network. It was a haven for the alliance of some very naive children who thought they could remain neutral even as the world descended quietly into oblivion. I had walked into, whatever this city called itself, alone and wearing only my hooded cloak. I didn't care if anyone recognized me or my garb, though clearly the weather was in my favor in that regard today. I didn't fear these people. Even cornered animals know their place.

If the neutrality this city and its owners claimed wasn’t a sign of how desperate the aligned guilds ruling it had become, the number of guards on the streets surely was. Large patrols of well-armed and armored troops stood on the streets; a futile gesture against the imminent threats they unknowingly faced. While much of the city seemed to be hustling about its last minute pre-storm business, convinced these mere men could protect them, I knew the truth of it all. This city and its people were sheep and the wolves were already in the pen.

Turning the corner towards one of the busier streets, just past a still busy market square, I stopped and leaned against a shop's exterior. The shopkeeper was out front buttoning down the window hatches in preparation for the forthcoming storm, paying me no attention at all as he hurried about his work. I turned my attention further down the plaza towards a multi-storied building that proclaimed itself as a tavern and inn. I knew it to be the finest in the city and one that specialized in the meetings I was even now planning on attending.

After watching the tavern for several minutes I saw what I had been waiting for: a group walking down the street, heavily armored and with a banner proclaiming to all who was in that group.  Amateurs. With the guests of honor finally there, it was time for me to go to work. I made my way, at a leisurely pace, towards the building. Despite the implications, I couldn’t help feeling eager in anticipation of what was to come.

As I finally neared the tavern, I took little notice of the troops and officers of other organizations milling about just outside. I recognized a half dozen banners and house insignias on the men out front. This was not just a minor meeting, everyone was here. Good. I didn’t stop as I moved past these men, skipping entirely the front entrance and the guard’s attentions. No one paid any heed towards yet another cloaked stranger bundled against the wind. Not in this weather.

The stables were crowded with horses; another sign the meeting here had brought together everyone important. I made my way past the stable entrance and handed my cloak to the stable boy brushing down a black mare. The side entrance to the tavern was just beyond. I walked past him, making my way through the door. I found it interesting how no guards were present here.

I found myself immediately in the crowded main room of the tavern, thick with people and the scent of meat and mead. I paused a moment to take note that the stairs to the second floor meeting area were guarded.  And when I looked towards the opposite end, the stairs that led to the rooms travelers stayed in were clear. Perfect. I grabbed a mug from a passing waitress and used it to look like I was just another patron. It helped me blend into the crowd as I moved towards the back stairs. As I made my way my eyes scanned the people in the main room, pausing carefully to note those who looked to be associated with the meeting going on upstairs. Very few of them were here in the main room. Curious.

As I reached the stairwell landing, I was met by a man wearing a cloak like mine. He had been expecting me, nodded and then gestured to the door at the end of the hallway. No words were exchanged, but I passed him and into the indicated room. Inside I found what I expected, an elegant room decorated as a honeymoon suite of a sort. More importantly, it was directly adjacent to the primary meeting room in the tavern.

A man with his hood pulled back with his head pressed up against the wall was inside. His tactic of listening to the meeting in the other room wasn’t elegant, but it was clearly working. The floor in front of him was covered in scrawled notes and more were being taken as he listened intently to the wall in front of him. He nodded subtly to me, clearly listening to something important at that moment and not wishing to miss it.

I retrieved the notes and quickly glanced at their contents. This meeting had been a busy one. Trade deals, military agreements, and even a few new alliances had been made. I didn’t recognize all of the names, clearly smaller entities unworthy of note I hoped. I paused at the top of the next page, reading and re-reading what had been written. “Must remove… threat… Obsidian… imminent...” Interesting.

I went back to the door and opened it a crack. I made a quick hand-sign to the man who was watching our exit out of this place. The man quickly disappeared down the stairwell, following what had always been the predetermined plan here today. I closed the door and slid onto a couch opposite the wall and began my wait. I watched quietly as more notes and intelligence were gathered, knowing that every bit of it was important. It was unfortunate that these men had threatened Obsidian.  Not that it mattered, their fate had already been predetermined this day.

A half hour passed and the group meeting in the adjacent room, opposite the wall I was sitting in, had summoned their lunch to the meeting room. The meeting itself had concluded. As the food arrived and everyone began to eat, my spy stood up and handed me the last of the notes. Nothing further would be gained from this meeting. I began to shake my head slightly, disappointed as I read the last of his writing. These people were so… predictable. I motioned to the spy and he collected all of his hand written notes and tossed them into the fireplace. No trace could be left behind.

I walked back the way I had come and resumed my leaning position against the shop wall down the street. The spy stood nearby watching the opposite direction for trouble. I closed my eyes and waited. Within a few minutes, I heard what I'd been expecting. At first a woman’s scream, then several, and then all hell broke loose. I kept my eyes closed, waiting for more. The sounds of swords being drawn and men yelling became clear. Shouting and then… the first tendrils of smoke and flame began to lick up the outside of the building. Success.

The man who had been at the top of the stairs finally rejoined us. As he approached he tossed me my cloak I had left behind in the stables. As the flames grew and began to consume the entire building, the distinct sounds of frantic swordplay could still be heard. I put back on my cloak and drew the hood up, turning back to watch the unfolding maelstrom. Concussion blasts and the sounds of terrible magic being loosed could be felt even from this distance. I looked back, my cloak and hood fully back in place, and smirked at the chaos playing out before us.

The last man coughed grabbing my attention from the growing pyre, and extended his hand. It held something small. I reached out and grabbed it from his outreached hand. “The cook was able to complete his task sir.” Obviously I thought and pointed back to the scene in front of us. He chuckled quickly and added “How did you know they would blame each other for the poisoning?” I looked back at him and grinned, saying nothing.

The storm came against the city in that fateful decisive moment. Almost as if it could feel the furious melee that had broken out around the tavern. Rain poured down on the combatants dulling the sounds of the deadly violence still going on. A new man approached and handed me a report indicating that all of the alliances messengers had successfully left the city, warning their respective organizations of the day’s internal betrayals. I motioned for the man who had done such excellent work bypassing the meetings magical wards earlier today to come closer. He came to my side and waited for the expected order.

I nodded to him once more and in response he began the casting of a simple spell. When it finished a small but brilliant globe of light formed in his hands and began to float up into the storm, oblivious to the winds and torrential downpour all around it. Almost immediately in response I could see men in cloaks peeking out from all around us; they were on rooftops, in alleys, inside and out. I knew there to be over a hundred Obsidian Unseen (members) in this city hiding and waiting to complete the day’s operation.

I nodded once more and pointed to the center of the chaos. The man sent the now blinding sphere scurrying towards the tavern where it grew and blossomed into a brilliance that rivaled the sun, despite being in the middle of a dark and terrible storm. The sounds of combat faded further as it took its place above the battlefield, and even more still when the sphere disappeared entirely. In its absence everything seemed unnaturally dark, as if the spell had sucked all of the light from its surroundings.

Within seconds the sounds of men dying resumed. This time, however, I knew were my men striking while this fragile alliance had already poured their whole effort into destroying one another. The fight was short and bloody. They never really had a chance. The rains still came down in waves, futilely trying to wash away the day’s events. I knew this day would not be erased by mere rain. As quickly as the fight was over, the exodus from the city was faster still. I walked out of the city as casually as I had entered, with a hundred trained assassins joining the macabre parade.

vaands reacted to TragicNumberOne in Short Story Entry - Centaur
I’m a horse out of my pasture. If I were a dumber centaur, I would long to go back to training in the legion. But thank the All-father I am not that dumber centaur, because I hated that whorse’s son Gaius Aurelius. He almost took the pride out of joining the Red Brigade. Every day he made into a dishonorable hell, not because the work was hard, but because it was against the interests of the Empire. I would curse Gaius to be consumed by the Hunger, but my wish has already been granted. Gaius Aurelius is dead, abandoned by the gods.

Sam came up next to me. His bow looked ready to crack. “There are aqueducts everywhere. I only ever heard of the feats of the centaur empire. But seeing them myself is quite different.”

I laughed at him. “HA! If you believe petty aqueducts are the pinnacle of the empire, then you will be speechless before our true achievements. Now, human, look closely at the duct. Do you see that seal?”

Sam nodded as I continued, “That is the seal of…” I paused when I realized what I was seeing.

“Whose seal is it?” Sam asked.

“That, human, is the seal of Gaius Aurelius. A most dishonorable member of my people.”

Sam looked closer, as though trying to inscribe into his mind the symbol of my hated rival. The eyes of the seal tauntingly gleamed at me. Perhaps Gaius’s spirit was judging my actions, but I am not beholden to dead Centaurs, much less dishonorable ones. I believed this human needed to know the misdeeds of Gaius Aurelius. “Every time I worked to bring honor to my brigade, my family, and my empire, he either stood in the way, or stole credit when his vile machinations failed.”

My heart pounded. The very thought of Gaius was enough to send me into a rage. However, before his damnable spirit’s judgment, I would not show weakness.

“Ey! 4-legs, come o’er here. Same for the rest ‘o ya’s.” The dwarf gave me a useful distraction.

Our party was strange. There was the ugly dwarf armed with some foreign looking dagger. There was a Giant Woman who insisted that she was a member of the race who call themselves Giants, but she was too short to be one of them, so I believed she was just a freakish human. There was also the Frostweaver. She seemed concerningly delighted to be wandering through the ruins of my people. With Sam and me the party totaled 5 warriors.

No one but Sam had told me their names. I didn’t expect Sam to survive long. He was naive enough to tell me his name. We all followed the god Maeve. She had chosen me for my honor and strength as a warrior. She sent me on a mission to the ruins of an old centaur world with warriors I didn’t know. I did all of this without question. Perhaps that made me naive too.

I was the party’s guide, but other than the dwarf, I didn’t know who had been told the details of our mission. I was to bring us to the world’s governing palace, but for a world like this, it would just be a petty villa. Despite my lack of knowledge of this world, all of the lands of the empire were built to a standard design. I knew we must be close to the villa.

Sam was still next to me when he said, “I see more of Gaius’s symbols around here.”

“I see them too,” I responded. “The little money he had had for gambling, he wasted on the outer territories of the empire.” Gaius did not gamble like weaker centaurs. These investments were his gambling, but Sam need only know that money was put at risk, so thus Gaius gambled.

The Frostweaver joined us. She had shown herself to be a strange creature, disappearing for hours at a time, exploring the ruins, only to come next to me and laugh. I cared little for the lesser races.

This time, though, she did not just laugh. Her words pierced me like the ice she used in battle. “This world is quite the treasure. The stories of the Centaur Empire fail to do justice to it.” I waited for her to continue. Disappointed with my lack of response, she said “The hunger will be very pleased to swallow it all up.”

The Frostweaver was some sort of vile witch, but Maeve wished for me to work with her, so that’s what I did. However, her claims were still ignorant, so I took the opportunity to educate her. “Your eyes deceive you, Frostweaver. The architecture on this world was paid for and constructed by the dishonorable and incompetent Gaius Aurelius. It’s a miracle that the arches support themselves in spite of his poor hand.”

The Frostweaver took great joy in her response. “You lie to yourself, Horse. It is a testament that the arches lasted under the Hunger. Only a master of stonework could have achieved this.” Her contradiction was an insult, but I did not grace it with a response. Sam and the Frostweaver re-joined the freakish human and dwarf behind me as I led them to the villa.

Sam was impressionable, so he got along with me well, but the rest of the party was simple, unable to appreciate the feats of the truly great centaurs. I couldn’t completely trust anyone in my party, even Sam. He spoke with the rest of them as much as he did with me.

We came upon the front gate of the villa. It was open. In the yard the risen corpses of my kin awaited us, but like all other abominations, we dealt with them quickly. During the fighting, I judged the prowess of my party. Sam’s damaged bow held, and his arrows flew true. The freakish human, dwarf, and Frostweaver fought skillfully enough as well. However, in my rage, I moved over-aggressively, occasionally leaving their protection. While my prowess alone would have been enough to best these foes, I was still disappointed that my supposed allies made no effort to follow me forward. During one of my attacks a monstrous corpse came upon my unguarded side. I turned to strike the creature before it could rally a strike of its own.

The last abomination fell to the dwarf’s knife. This was to the displeasure of the Frostweaver, who prided herself on achieving both first and last blood. As everyone made sure the fighting was over, I approached the giant woman. “When I struck our third foe, another came up on my flank. You know that I am vulnerable on the flank. Why did you not move forward with me?”

She responded, “Dumb horses die dumb deaths.” The simplicity and arrogance of the response either meant she truly was a giant, or that this human was as dumb as one.

The dwarf interrupted and directed us towards our next goal. “We need to move to the cemetery. Horse, you know where it is?” It was not a question, but rather a command, so I nodded and began to lead them toward the back of the villa where the cemetery traditionally was placed.

Why the cemetery would be important eluded me, but I did not question it. The cemetery was a small fenced zone, which could barely hold one hundred corpses. To my surprise, none of the corpses had been risen. In the center was a mausoleum, where the rulers of the world would have been laid after death.

The giant human spoke first. “So is this where the good horse is?” I did not know who she was referring to. The dwarf only added to my confusion. “Aye, this should be it.” The Frostweaver laughed, and even Sam had a smirk.

“Who is buried here? What are we here for?”

The Frostweaver answered, “Open the stone door. See what’s inside.”

There was no purpose in arguing with them. I moved to the mausoleum, and after a struggle, I forced open the door. The walls were lined with empty alcoves. In the center was a simple stone sarcophagus. The entire party moved into the mausoleum and stood with me around it.

The dwarf said, “This hunk of rock needs to be opened. Horse, giant, the two of ya’s are the strongest. Get on each side and open ‘er up.”

We did as he said. The rest of the party backed away. I began to lift first, but the woman was too dumb to realize it. She then lifted her side after I let my side down. She glared at me as I scoffed at her. This happened three more times. I looked at the dwarf, who seemed indifferent. The Frostweaver smiled and Sam looked bored.

On the fourth attempt the woman finally figured out when to lift her side, and with a grunt we both threw the slab to the side where it broke in two. I was the only one to look inside. There was the corpse of a proud warrior inside. A helm was over its head and the body was mostly intact.

I heard a stretching sound, like that of a bow, but I didn’t care. I reached in to turn the head of this warrior, grabbing it by the beard to gain leverage. It was uncooperative, as though not wishing to be woken from its slumber.

The resistance suddenly broke, and, as if it were alive, the face turned toward me. The Frostweaver laughed. I could have sworn the warrior was Gaius Auralius.

I looked up. Sam’s bow was pointed at me. He released his arrow, but the damaged bow finally snapped. The pressure holding the arrow back drove it into his face. The dwarf and Frostweaver looked shocked, but the giant woman was on me. I shouted for the blessing of the All-father and tried to draw my weapon from my back. The woman threw me against the wall. I fell to the ground. Something was wrong with my leg.

The Frostweaver was over me, smiling. She talked over Sam’s screams and the giant woman’s boasting of how she finally dealt with “the dumb horse.”

“All of your talk of Gaius Aurelius.” She giggled as though the phrase alone was a joke. “You were a mistake. He was the warrior from the Red Brigade Maeve demanded from the legends.”

My body failed me, but my spirit did not rise. I was no longer Maeve’s champion. I was alone. No one would remember my name.
