can I just say this kinda feels like the only game relevant convo going on, on these forums its kinda funny I was all aboard the hype train when I backed kicked starter but these forums are just the same arguments going round in circles im soo happy to see a constructive argument between people final thanks to Mufter & Lephys.

I actually agree with both of you though I hate insta-gibbing I think it should be in but at the same time I do not see insta-gibbing as 1shot kill its more like high risk high reward in the ways that IF player A gets his moves off just right then hes gonna Insta-gibb player B but not a hey pressed 1 u die. The risk comes from when u have to get the combo off b4 the has a chance to react properly if he trys to fight u with dmg instead of defending first, you got him. If player B reacts my doing a e.g. blind he gets you.

I guess im for insta-gibbing I just see it slightly differently if im half health 1 shot me but if im full health no chance son sorry.
just my 2 pence on the matter. thanks again for the constructive debate here keep it up guys

The risk is in getting caught and killed instantly. When you choose a class who can one-shot people on occasion, you give up your rights to strong armor and a lot of health. You're lean, mean, and lurk in the shadows for opportunity. Which brings me to this next reply...

YES. Exactly this. I love sitting on the sidelines and waiting for the perfect opportunity to strike. To watch from the shadows as one player falls back. To follow him to a point where he thinks he's safe.... and then the pounce. PRAY for a CRIT! For some people it's the rush of the front-lines that attracts them to a PvP game. I'll always be the lurker.

It isn't a stretch. It utilizes the same line of reasoning. In other words, I want to play a Frostweaver. But I don't like dying in one shot. So, you're saying "just choose something else that isn't what you want." In other words, the existence of one-shotting is justified by the fact that you don't have to opt into it. So, that means the lack of it is justified by the fact that you don't have to opt into a lack of it. That's reasoning based solely on subjectivity.

Unless insta-gibs are the only possible way to produce any adrenaline or risk, that doesn't really work as a reason. Keep in mind, I'm just speaking matter-of-factly. I have no interest in judging your preferences and enjoyment of video games. It's fine that you enjoy insta-killing. I just don't think it fits this game very well.

I just don't understand why your build choices need to produce a one-hit kill. If someone's seated and you sneak up to them, they're not even prepared to respond to any attack you make, whether you kill them instantly or not. So, that's just a tactical advantage from getting the drop on them like that. While, if you can do all that same stuff and produce a one-hit kill on someone in the midst of a big battle, just because they don't get to focus on you, that has nothing to do with what you did to put yourself into that position. That guy was fighting some other guy and didn't have time for you, and you just ran up killed him using the code that defines your build. You didn't best him. Your damage value bested his HP. You didn't make your damage value.

Now, if you were to punt him off a cliff, then great. You got into the position where you took advantage of a cliff being there. That's awesome. Or, you lure him into a trap. Or you get him in front of a trebuchet shot or something, or drop a wall on him, etc. That's fine. But, aside from those situations, I don't understand why "Haha, you're sitting and unaware of my presence, so I attack you from the shadows and you still at least have SOME chance of POSSIBLY, MAYBE getting away or hurting me really badly, but I used my ongoing skill to shutdown those chances by countering your reactions and killing you very, very swiftly and efficiently" isn't good enough.

Think of a fighting game. Like Street Fighter. Imagine if, if you built your character right in Street Fighter (imagine you can build your character in Street Fighter), you could insta-kill your opponent. Would you not agree that that would be silly? Why is that? Is it because the first humans on earth dug up a stone tablet in the earth that said "Fighting games don't work well with insta-killing"? No, it's because it simply doesn't work well with the idea of skill-based, player-versus-player conflict in that type of setting/context. You can still kill people VERY QUICKLY in games like Street Fighter, if you know what you're doing. What good would letting just one of your hits do all the work for you do?

And no, the consumables thing isn't invalid, because you listed it as an available method to prevent insta-gibbing. Sure, against the person who happens to not also utilize the benefits of buff effects of any kind? You're commenting on the general existence of the buff effects, while I was pointing out how it directly affects insta-gibbing. The attacker can literally counter-act your buffs with his own, so "consumables" does not let you stop insta-gibbing, any more than "happen to never encounter someone who can instagib you" does.

Lastly, I apologize if I misleadingly sounded like someone who likes to roam around solo and doesn't want to ever die. I want you to kill me loads of times in game, if you can. I just don't want you to rob me of my adrenaline just to get yours. I want the adrenaline of realizing I'm probably about to die (because I've just been pounced upon from the shadows), and fighting for my life just to try to get you off of me, like my leg's been grabbed by a shark or something. I don't want all the sharks to just swallow me whole. That just makes me want to not even swim in the water.

I want to fight back and still lose. Not lose-by-default because your build completely counters mine. "Can't detect stealth, low HP... LET'S DO THIS!"

And, honestly, I want to beat lots of people in combat the same way. Not instantaneously "because backstab damage numbers," but because I have to put more thought and effort into it than that. Because, after the backstab, I stopped them from getting away and dealt with their retaliation with skill and precision. Hell, I want to sometimes get the drop on an Archetype who COULD very well kill me before I kill them, but still win because of how intelligently I fight, and not just because I got enough potential damage built up to kill them before they even knew there was a fight going on.

Lephys, I actually enjoyed that entire post.
I do understand your reasoning a bit better now.
However, I do disagree with you on the pooint that this is not the game for insta-gibbing.
This game is absolutely the game for it.

Not all battles will be noble.
Not all battles will be fair.

    I like big battles too.
    I was in a top-tier guild WvWvW in GW2.
I didn't even play theif. I played engineer.
I was all about utility, but I did occasionally spec a roaming build.
Why is this relevant, you ask?

I love being a part of a big group too.
I love big fighhts and that feeling of accomplishment.
I remember being a small group of 25 and winning battles facing over 100.

    That feeling was fantastic.

Sometimes I'd roam with a few theifs too... have them stealth.
"Oh look, a lonely engi let's gank him"
They all pop out and we wreck their whole team.
Sure it's cheap and unfair, but life isn't always fair.

I also remember being a rogue in Vanilla WoW and BC.
Sneaking around in AV, waiting for a straggler to run by.
    Sap, Ambush, Backtab. Dead.

Or even just waiting for someone near the auction house in Tanaris.
    Ambush. Dead.

It was fun. Running from the guards and other players.
I'd occasionally die, but there was nothing to lose.
This game will make it even more fun because I'd have to risk it.

If these games make it possible to quickly destroy someone, why wouldn't a hardcore game like CF do it?

I dunno. I'm just rambling at this point.
I'm really just nostalggic about harcore gaming.
Maybe it will never be a thing again.

Sheesh. I consider myself fairly pro-low-ttk, and I still balk at the idea of instakilling someone as a single person in a full loot game. That sounds terrible, no matter what class is performing it.

Maybe a oneshot when you get directly hit by a trebuchet.

I understand your mentality, but there is an easy solution for someone against being insta-gibbed.... play a class that can't get insta-gibbed.
If you don't like being one shot, maybe a cloth wearer is not for you.
Maybe you should be wearing plate and tote a shield.

There are easy enough mechanics to prevent insta-gibs from occuring:
Timed shields - This way you can only get insta-gibbed when you're not expecting it or a shield is already on cooldown. Stealth detection - If it's a melee insta-gibber they can't get close enough without being detected Consumables - buff up; nuff said Evasion - Can't get gibbed if you can't get hit AoE - Expose stealth targets if you think they might be around Traps - Place traps to help snag sneaky people Travel with a group - maybe they one-shot you, but they'll die too I want an unforgiving game.
If I want to be able to 1-shot someone with the risk of being 1-shot myself, why take that away?

So: You're telling me what my motivations are, and that they are hatred and/or fear. You're telling me that I'm not honestly putting forward my opinion. You're telling me that I'm not offering arguments which present my point of view.

All of this despite the fact that I've made my point of view very clear all along: I have no objection to VR nor discussion of VR nor Crowfall's implementation of VR, but I feel that there is a strong competitive disadvantage in giving up the ability to see someone approaching from behind. There's no subtext. There's no hidden message. My point was explicit in my very first post and has not changed.

This kind of behavior- ignoring someone's clear point made in plaintext, searching for hidden messages in subtext and not finding them, telling them that they're not sincerely participating in the conversation, and then calling into question their motives and character based on the premise that they're not making the point which they actually are making- is pathological. Healthy people communicate in plaintext; the absence of subtext is not nonparticipation. Please take a close look at yourself and decide if your approach to communication .is effective and productive.

I'm not trying to stifle discussion of VR nor adoption of VR. I hope that Crowfall's battlefields are full of VR enthusiasts; I'm just skeptical that there will be many on winning teams. I understand that you're convinced otherwise, although there's no factual basis for that conviction as you acknowledge when you say "there much that remains unknown about how VR will best work in Crowfall, because something like this has never been done before"

We've both made our points. The factual data to resolve the disagreement doesn't exist yet. Until there's an actual game to play and actual results to demonstrate, there really isn't much more to say on the topic of whether VR is going to be a competitive advantage or disadvantage.

I don't need to make arguments; I'm perfectly content to let you and any other VR evangelists continue to believe in the value of an unrivalled sense of situational awareness. I hope you convince lots of people that you have the right idea and that they should all sacrifice 50%+ of their field of vision in return for greater immersion. I also hope they carry around lots of valuable loot as they enjoy that immersion.

No amount of arguing right now is going to convince anyone of anything, which is why I posted that I was looking forward to settling the question with actual facts once we have a playable game.

The wild life changes, but we haven't come to a decision if already tamed mounts / caravans will be affected by the hunger yet. It may be that these creatures are harder to tame / control as the seasons progress. Or they may stay exactly the same but the wild versions transform and become more deadly.

A field of horses might be a very dangerous location in Winter.
