Swiftly got a reaction from Ricco96 in Fletching
Arcane Archery got me thinking.  I really hope that Fletching is a crafting option in CF.  And I hope it is a specific craft only available to Rangers and Stalkers.  It should be something that can be done in the wild and not restricted to a crafting station.

If Fletching is a thing I hope that the type of arrow being used plays a significant role in combat such as range, speed and the damage type you do.

Arcane type damage should be attainable but should be very expensive and difficult to obtain.

    Thoughts?

I am going to agree.  I hate zergs in general, but with friendly fire and collision detection in the game I think the zergs will be limited.  But on the other side if raid leaders are able to successfully manage a zerg where they aren't constantly pushing each other around and killing each other with friendly fire then kudo's to them.

Well I am not exactly new, but I finally took the plunge and pledged.  I wanted to back the devs as I think they truly do have a passion for what they are doing.  I am still not all that excited about the archtype I am most interested in only being a rat.  But I will take the wait and see approach

Agreed,  Diversity is a good thing.  If you like the wild skins you should have the option for them in game.

Swiftly reacted to Pawkette in Add-On
Hi, some of you may know me and some of you may not. I'm Pawkette and I, amongst other game developery things, make Addons for MMOs.

I thought I'd stop by and talk a little bit about Addons and the impact they have on development resources, game design, and my own enjoyment of products (I know personal stuff).

    Development Resources:
Why oh why did we decide to do this?!

One really important thing to remain cognizant of throughout this somewhat rampling post, is that the choice to allow your end user to modify their game experience in more programatic ways can both be taxing on game design as well as development resources. These days, most companies are licensing a couple middlewear solutions for UI. There's Coherent UI, Scaleform, Iggy, and then a couple specifc to some game engines like Unity's NGUI and Unreal Engine 4's Slate / UMG. The other option is to roll your own solution, games like WildStar, Elder Scrolls Online, World of Warcraft, and Warhammer Online have all rolled their own UI systems. This can be a great burden on a small development team and requires someone with a lot of knowledge on core UI concepts, sure the ideas haven't changed much since the 80s but it's still a lot of work to implement all of the core widget behaviors, and then figure out how to do scripting of logic and appearance. It's also difficult to cross polinate systems, if you're developers are working in one area all the time (say Scaleform) and you have a modding system for your UI written in Lua, it can be very difficult to maintain those two systems as one simply isn't getting hammered on at the same rate as the other during pre-pro and production.

    Game Design:
Make no mistake, your choice here will impact your game.

Another often overlooked element of Addons is the two way street they create between consumers of design and creators of design. Simply put, modding the UI introduces nuance to your product that is very difficult to account for if you're trying to create a very refined end user experience. What was once a known platform becomes one in which players are in far greater control of how they consume information. Very rarely does the desire to change that information's presentation come without the desire for more information, they seem inseperable to me. I watched as Elder Scrolls Online removed large swaths of their Addon functionality prior to launch to the dismay of lots and lots of vocal forum goers, the idea that they wouldn't be able to consume the information in the game the way they had expected to be able to was frustrating for people.

The choice to offer your end user the ability to modify their experience in any sense is one that can't be made lightly. As a modder, I stand firmly in the camp that it can enable a better experience for everyone, but that is very specific to an environment where people aren't expected to be consistently on equal footing.

    Are they fun?:
I honestly can't tell you, my experience is weird.

I learned to program writing mods and addons for my favorite MMOs growing up, without Lua, without World of Warcraft and Warhammer, I wouldn't really be where I am today. I also know that my enjoyment of playing the games in which I write and manage Addons seems to decrease because I'm constantly fixing things, changing things, worrying about my work and not enjoying the game. I don't know about everyone else, from a perspective of just consuming addons it may be different, but that's kind of where I stand.

Anywho, UI has become a very important aspect of Game Development. Largely, because people went from spending moderate sums of money to risking large sums of money. If you're going to spend 50 million dollars developing your game, you damn well better spend like 1 million making sure you've got some great UX going there and some fancy UI work because most of your system design is going to be represented as that. I would hope that the designers of Crowfall care about their UI and try to make the best experience for us that they can.

I do apologize if this has been discussed before.  I did do a search before posting and didn't get any results.  I just did another search and see several topics which may have answered my questions before posting.  So again I apologize for bringing this back up as it is obviously a sore topic for quite a few.
