Eldreth reacted to sneaky_squirrel in The Guinecean (Previously "badger Scout")
Disclaimer:  This post was made prior to the announcement of the Guinecean Duelist.

There is a severe lack of nonsense speculation going on today, so I took the freedom to incite commotion by making random claims of what the unknown badger in the concept art banners is going to be.  At 10:00 PM, flawless timing.

Oh God please don't make me read this.  Skip to the [start Reading Here] if you want.

    The Badger Scout

First of all, the first four archetype reveals in Crowfall have presented a pattern.  The first archetype revealed was the Centaur Legionnaire, a vanilla melee DPS.  As most of us can probably tell, these centaurs are designed to kill, that's it.  Now this might sound obvious and totally irrelevant, that's because it is.

The second archetype revealed was the Stoneborn Forgemaster, to the surprise of some, including me, the Forgemaster was assigned the support role.  This is where I began to question, why is an archetype with high strength rating a support character?  It doesn't make sense.  Today's Thursday.  I'm late, I have to catch the bus.  How would a Stoneborn Forgemaster support his allies?  Stoneborn can't kiss boo boos goodbye.  Support role isn't a tank.  Why would a hardy character have a backline role?  "Clearly he is a support character because he supports through weapons-crafting for the war, you can't fight without weapons after all" is what I concluded.  The Stoneborn were revealed at the time where we all began to consider "naked" starts as a possibility (Import rules were revealed).  Stoneborn Forgemasters are the ones in charge of weapons logistics, bam, here you go *Hands over sword*

The third archetype reveal was the Highborn Templar, she's a tank.  Move aside redhead *shoves templar*, are those blue undead screenshots? Oooooh.

The fourth archetype reveal was the Fae Assassin.  Oh she has no role.  No wait, she's a melee DPS role.  Wait, why did it change into a theater mask?  Specialist?  A specialist assassin...a role dedicated to non-large scale combat?  I am starting to think Crowfall is hosting hyper specialized archetypes (I did not realize this, someone pointed it out in the Fae Assassin forum).

Can hyper specialized roles which sacrifice general combat capability for strengths in other aspects of the game even exist?  No that's ridiculous.

"our goal is to create a deep, complex simulation – filled with tactical and environmental considerations and emergent gameplay.  Our design goal is that no single character is better than others in every situation."

Huh?  No single character is better than others in every situation?  He obviously only meant PvP situations! There's no possible way that...

"This approach means that mastery of the game relies on skill: knowing how to build your character in a way that suits your playstyle..."

    Stop it.

"and then seeking out situations in the game that will be to your advantage."

There will be characters specialized in crafting and resource collection!  That was a bold statement from my part.  Stop it me.

[start Reading Here]  You reached a checkpoint, you either read my diary, or skipped it.  Why would you skip it?  Moving on.

I think that the Badger Scout (Placeholder name until archetype reveal) is a scavenger!  That's stupid, your just being delusional, yes I am bored.

The Badger Scout, like the Fae Assassin, has a hyper specialized role, only that instead of "assassinating" key targets.  Badgers specialize in the outdoors.  Picking up scraps of food, steel that just happened to be lying around...pierced through some guy's chest, he won't mind if we borrow it.

You want evidence?  Speculation is my evidence.  Badgers are small, as we can see in the concept art, and both we and Artcraft know that concept art banners are actually screenshots in disguise, therefore canon.  Badgers are small.  Yes, small Badgers are tough, they don't back down, they also get squashed easily under horse hooves, learn to pick your battles roadkill.  The Badgers are small and therefore can't fight, so they clearly specialize in detecting opponents, and avoiding opponents.  This makes them perfect scouts and pathfinders (I've been reading up on shadowbane scouts on some wiki).  The role of badgers is intel, intelligence.  They are the little owl eyes behind the bushes, the tiny no good sons that slip right through your hands when you try to get your hands around them.

I understand why you misguidedly think they are scouts, but why are they scavengers?  Because I want scavengers.  But there's more!  Centaur deity, Valkyn is the top of the Pantheon.  centaurs are conquerors, they rule you drool, that's why their Valkyn is at the top.  Stoneborn are sad, and they cry at night because their mommy turned into a black hole, boo hoo, they only want to fix Gaea and they don't even care about anything else, they be neutral and at the middle.  Fae have some wicked grudge against dudes, and they would rather make out with The Hunger, they are to the right with the moon.  Templar think The Hunger is a big bully, they lean to the left and to the sun.  Illidara, the rat crest, is at the bottom.  We all know Illara is crest speech for Badger right?  Why would Badger boys be at the bottom?

Do rats not scavenge?  Do they now tread the sewers eating all day?  Badgers are resource bloodhounds, if there are resources to be found, buy yourself a Badger at the pet store, their nose will catch a scent, just be careful they don't try to pick a fight with horse hooves.  Who you looking at horse hooves?

I made a wall of text, I wonder if I didn't violate the CoC with text quantity abuse.  Sure would be awkward if no one replied.  I can't be bothered to proofread for spelling errors.

In fact, here's a conveniently insightful post from 2003 of J. covering some of Wolfpack's early development history. It's a second-hand accounting of a technote presentation by Todd. We've already had this story told on the boards, but it's interesting hearing it in another light nonetheless.

    Hey Guys!

I'm excited to show you guys the current progress on the Male Confessor model! This is his high poly version from Zbrush. Soon he will be made game ready and sent over to be rigged and begin animation work. I look forward to sharing more updates with everyone in the future!

We're still early in development so there's a number of things we still need to do. However, Eric has started on the confessors models!

I wonder if people would want to see his work in progress?

Hey gang,   This morning, we're submitting a few new items that may be of interest:    - The Confessor Archetype page -- first of our spell casters.

    - As indicated in the same narrative, the the Confessors have a rather... unique view on the origin of the Hunger, and the way it should be dealt with.

    - We're including two concepts for this class (for both genders) but unfortunately, no screenshot yet. That's because the Confessor character are still being worked on.  (Remember -- Crowfall is still in early development.)

    - Additionally, we're passing along our first significant piece of lore; ancient text that details the origin of the Universe, and the machinations of the earliest of Valkyn's children in War of the Gods (Part 1).

    - and, lastly, we're unveiling details in our Pricing FAQ on how we intend to charge for the game, once it is released.

As always, keep those opinions (and forums posts!) coming...

    Dibs on the horned llama!

(OK, stag is probably more accurate but I'll be damned if I'm not calling it a horned llama!)

Looks great so far. Can absolutely see the relation between the concept art and the knight's model.

You saw me as prey. That was your first mistake.

It is understandable. After all, I resemble a buck, much like the one you roasted over your fire pit a fortnight ago. That gleam in your eyes as you approached, arrow drawn, sure of your kill...it was the same then as it was just now.

And why wouldn't it be? The creatures of the forest are fragile things, living their lives in fear of the next pair of sharp teeth to nip at their heels. My ancestors, like them, dreaded the press of shadows all around. The low growls, the near-silent whisper of clawed paws approaching, the eyes gleaming in the dark.

What escaped you tonight is that my eyes gleam back. That was your second mistake.

We grew tired of terror. We taught ourselves to drink it in, to soak up the night through our skin and breathe it into our lungs. It runs in our veins and whispers in our ears. It sharpens our teeth and gives us a hunger for more than grass, a thirst for more than water. So as you lay there, weeping for the pain to stop and the bleeding to be stanched, you have only yourself to blame.

You thought yourself the predator. That was your final mistake.

Shall I describe to you how you taste?

    ---

Just having a bit of fun with the unrevealed archetypes. I might do some more down the road if inspiration hits me.

    ha!

yeah, it was rather harsh for Tully, so I stand by my wording in this case.  it doesn't help that I constantly say things like screenshots aren't good enough, and need to be re-taken before they are be released.

That said, you guys might want to keep in mind that I CONSTANTLY talk in hyperbole.  I never say things like, "this coffee doesn't taste good" or "that game review was bad."  Instead, I go straight to "this coffee is horrendous" or "that review was brutal".

(actually, in truth, it's usually more vitriolic and curse-laden.  I jump right to "this coffee is f'ing horrendous" or "holy crap!  that review was f'ing brutal.")

yeah, I know, I shouldn't curse.  I'm sure I just shattered your image of me.  At least I have learned to filter it out of my forum posts.

Anyway, if you knew me, you wouldn't have ever thought anything of my use of the word "brutal".  No one at ACE even noticed.

    vague hint:
    "I <3 D'Orion"

    now, to your real question:

I am ALL IN on Crowfall.  I've invested a big chunk of my savings.  I left my cushy job.  I gave up my safe little nest, and took a bold (arguably foolhardy) leap into the unknown.

    Why?

Because I HAVE to make this game.

March, 2004: Shadowbane basically ruined me.  I put everything I had into Wolfpack; I crunched for years.  I spent all the money that I made from selling my previous company.  I lost friends.  I alienated family members.  I'm not going to go so far as to say "shadowbane caused my divorce", but I will say: it certainly didn't help.

We shipped it, yes. and it sold well. But it was riddled with issues (technical, design, and operational) that caused it to bleed players like a sieve.

All that effort, all that cost, all that pain. and it just didn't work. We lost.

We sold the company to find a soft landing for the team.   The founders?  No such luck.  Unemployed.

I had invested everything in Shadowbane, and walked away with almost nothing.  For about a year, I basically fell off the grid, didn't do much of anything but think about what went wrong.

I'm over that, now.  I'm not longer haunted by 'this went wrong' or 'that went wrong'.  I'm years past the autopsy.

What haunts me is this: it ALMOST worked.

The vision we (the Wolfpack founders) had was amazing.  The vision was right there, so perfectly clear in our minds.  It was tangible.  And, every now and then in development, the rarest of moments.  A break in the storm clouds, the sunlight would pour through like a light from heaven and everything would just WORK.  For a few moments, you could FEEL it.  Ask the folks who played the SB beta, they can tell you what it felt like:

    THIS IS IT.

    THIS IS THE GAME.

    THIS IS THE VISION.

    IT IS REAL.

    IT WORKS.

...and then the clouds would roll back in, fires would erupt all around me, and everything would go to hell again.

The idea behind Crowfall -- the original idea that pre-dates Shadowbane, that was born in a pizza joint as a scribble on a paper napkin -- that vision is my white whale.  We had it once, right there, in our grasps.  It was so close!

    It ALMOST worked.

I've spent every day of the last decade learning how to build MMOs.  Shadowbane was the first game that I ever worked on, remember.  I made a ton of newbie mistakes.  Say what you like about Wizard101, but we had a flawless launch and amassed over 50 million players.  I've picked up a few tricks.

I learned what I need to learn about building MMOs.  Launching MMOs.  Running a live service.  and with Gordon here, and the team that we have recruited, we can do this.  We can make this game great.

This isn't just a game to me.  I'm on a mission.

It is time to right a great wrong.

I didn't want a "real" programming job where you had to document your code, and I wanted to code things I cared about.  But that was in 1977, what did I know?

Crack dealer, not crack addict.  (in all seriousness though, I like lots of game types but rarely have the focused time for playing other than for market research, if I had more free time, I'd certainly play more MMO's, strategy games and action RPGs though)

Depends on what sweet or savory is served with.

Unicorns?  Really?  They'd look pitiful when the hunger got to them.  How about some Llama's instead?
