    Yeah. From what I read, Gaius' back story is just that: a back story.
     
    Character development seems to be:  choose an archetype, spend creation points on advantages/disadvantages, acquire promotions to specialize your archetype, develop particular skills to further specialize.
     
    That level of customization is nothing at all like MOBA heroes.

    01/27/15 - Introducing the Legionnaire & FAQ! 
     
    Hey folks,
      A few things coming for you this week.   Today, we're putting up our first Hero page: the Centaur Legionnaire.   This is our first cut at how we're going to present the base Archetypes on the website.  Yes, I know it's light on customization options -- that will come later.     More importantly, this page includes: a detailed concept of the character himself, our first in-game environment screenshot (!), and a narrative background for a "sample" character.  Obviously, you'll want to write you own character backgrounds, but 1st person narrative is a great way to give you a feeling for the flavor of culture and backstory.  (Yes, it's a Shadowbane trick.  Still a good one, though!)   Additionally, we're dropping the first section of our FAQ, which answers questions about: character creation (confirming things you've already guessed at, and clarifying a few you didn't know), a few bits about advancement, and more.   Later this week, we'll be dropping more info about the nature of the CF universe, i.e. "why did we unlock the characters from the worlds/shards?" and start to look at the elements that make the strategy game work.   As always, thanks for keeping an eye on us, and for helping us to spread the word!   See you on the forums,   Todd ACE

    Hey folks,
      Well, it's been quite a few interesting weeks!   We launched the play2crush site on December 22nd. A few days before Christmas is generally not considered to be a great time to try and get attention... but it seemed to have worked out OK.   By the time we came back from break, we had already collected 10,000 registered players. Not quite a month since that announcement, and we're about to cross 20,000.   That's a staggering -- and completely humbling -- response. Thank you.   When Gordon and I set out to create this game, one of the things that we said from the beginning was: this game won't be for everyone.  and we're OK with that.  We've done big, mass-market games before.  With Crowfall, we wanted to make something different.  Something smaller, with a team that is willing and able to take some big design risks.   Innovation requires risk; it's a key ingredient.  We're comfortable with that, because we firmly believe that the core of this design is solid. There are still a lot of details that need to be fleshed out, of course -- but there are always elements that you have to adjust during production. Not only do I believe firmly that we are on the right track, I also know that, moving forward, you guys will let us know if we make any wrong turns. That's a huge advantage.   As we continue to reveal details about the game, a few things will happen:    Some of the people that we've attracted will figure out that this isn't the game for them. They will leave, and we'll thank for them giving our game consideration. Some people will find out about us for the first time -- or will finally see enough that we will earn their attention -- and join us.   Both of these are positive things. Because the net result will be a strong community of players who are really excited about Crowfall -- not the concept, not the speculation game, but the actual game we are building.   Starting tomorrow, we'll be ramping up the details that we are giving with each drop.     Hey folks,

     
    It's that time again!
     
    On the menu today we are serving:
     
    - The fourth installment in the "Banner Concepts" series. The inclusion of this scene is probably not huge surprise to anyone -- it's basically a "reverse shot" (and a prequel, I suppose) to the "Ramparts" image that we dropped last week. Internally, we refer to this image as the "Calling the Banners" image, for obvious reasons.
     

     
    - Next up is an example Fealty Chart.  This isn't a guild org chart -- we support guilds (and guild structures) but we've laid a different system on top of that, which ties player fealty directly to land ownership.   More on that system, and how it ties to siege conquest, will be coming soon. 
     

     
    - Lastly, presenting the 2/2 page of character creation -- in which a few more questions are answered.  In this one, you get a glimpse of the "Advantages" and "Disadvantages" system (which SB players will recognize as a direct descendent of the talents and traits system, only with more customization.)  As an interesting side note, we're actually in the process of going over these two pages (again!) right now, looking for ways to further streamline the interface.  Next time you see these screens, we'll likely have split it into 3 pages (to split appearance customization out as a separate step.)

    Today we were gifted with a female Templar character model (the translation from concept art to the actual model is uncannily accurate), another suggestive "Banner Concept" featuring our friend the knight in combat with a Champion, and an appropriately boggling image of a tree:
     

     
    At first glance these could be factions. However, the inclusion of Kronos and Gaea suggests deities to me. Maybe these are one path for choosing skills/spells?

    Hey gang,   A few interesting items for you today!     Continuing the exploration of our art style, we wanted to show you how an idea (in this case, a character) makes the jump from "2D illustration" to "3D game asset."     The following image gives some insight into this process. On the left we have a painted concept image of an archetype character (a female Templar).  On the right is a render of that same character, textured, modeled and lit 3D.  While the final result always differs a bit, you can begin to see how the art style begins at the concept stage and shines through in the eventual game.
        Our next image is another from our "Banner Concept" series.  This image shows a duel between two characters: A Knight (who you might recognize from the character creation screenshot, posted earlier this week) and a Champion.  At this particular moment, things are looking rather grim for the Knight.       Lastly, we're posting an an illustration that provides clues for both a core game systems, and one of our key narrative threads.     I'm not going to say anything else about this one -- yet!         As always, more will be revealed in time...   Todd ACE

    I like game structure that forces players to make CHOICES.
     
    Choices have consequence. 
     
    The key everyone seems to be glossing over is balance.  If this game is balanced; between gameplay styles, content, faction, class, profession, it will provide endless avenues for players to navigate.  If each aspect is balanced in both opposition to and conjunction with each other, what more can you ask for?
     
    "Lore" provides the backdrop that frames the story, allowing players to build upon it and carry it forward; Balance.

    ...without (hopefully) derailing your thread, I will go "on the record" saying that one of our major design goals for Crowfall is to dramatically reduce the traditional "grind" common to MMOs today.

    Here's an idea. And again, pure, rampant speculation. What if you choose an archetype from the base lists. The base archetypes are just templates with random genders, stats, features.
     
    You then use your "Creation Points" when forming your character to basically make ALL of your other character creation choices. Maybe there's something to spend the points on to choose your gender, your spec, your background, your skills. e.g., maybe you pick up a 'Templar' background to gain a healing spell (or line of spells). Or 'Daughter of a High Lord' background to choose your gender and backstory. All these things could be weighted with different costs (and different perks).

    Great overview manofbass! Definitely very excited.
     
    I'm in the minority I see about the hunger resistance! That's OK, pioneers of thought often fight an uphill battle against their peers!
     
    I just think "eat some food" is too mundane for this crowd (of developers). Could be wrong!

    J Todd Coleman is obviously in the process of building a game that Shadowbane players will feel closely affiliated with, however he simply isn't building a game exclusive to SB players.
     
    If we can all take a slightly more mature approach and see past the selfish desires, we can leave the game developers to actually construct the game along with input from a passionate SB player base.
     
    I want to be able to read a forum without looking at WTFPwnage flashing over and over on my screen, along with what I'd consider teen tantrums.
