quite a bit of guessing and some assumptions of possible abilities in this thread.  however it's certainly the coolest archetype thus far, IMOA.

being a specialist role would seem to indicate it'll be the least dps of the ranged archetypes though..

being 3 pips in both str and dex may indicate the class can just as easily focus melee (or perhaps hybrid both).  ie similar to the knight can focus archer and profession into heavily armored 'archer sentinel'.

also of interest that the archetype shares the same specialist masked icon of the assassin while the duelist has the shovel.  wonder if that indicates they're both stealth archetypes?  duelist could effectively also be a stealth class, they're just not visible 'tunneling'.

could the stalker not have access to stealth?

assuming there's even stealth in the game and how that mechanic may work.

I'm not a fan of of amazon/fairy assassin and especial so as it would seem that assassins are locked to fairies.  that said it's an interesting concept and I'm sure people will enjoy the archetype gender locked race/class combo.  Not everything is going to be a hit for everyone.  A bummer the 'assassin' is this fairy gender locked concept though.

hopefully there will be a male stealthy/stalking/ambushing dual wielding cutthroat bandit rogue marauder brigand still to come for all of us that are fans of the theme.

Not so much if the Ranger isnt able to drop anything else and is essentially a bloodhound that leads others to targets.  Perhaps the specialists archetypes, while not having as much dps as their pure dps counter parts, will have greater health/mitigation/CC to be able to equal the effectiveness of the higher DPS counter parts.

rather leery of this specialist role.  seems not unlikely to be pigeonholed utility moniker.  have a sense they're not going to contribute to dropping any enemy group outside utilizing tactics afforded to own group by their specialized abilities.

ie gerbils tunneling to allow dps archetypes to get under walls (past choke points) for surprise attacks.  not much reason for them post wall breach and  wouldnt want many in the group.

wonder what a specialist means as apparently they're not "dps"?  assassins arent melee dps and rangers arent ranged dps.  hmm

dont see how the original statement had anything to do with empirical (observed fact) data.  I took it as meaning from the image and lore he felt it appeared the ranger is inspired by THE medieval fantasy ranger archetype, Tolkien's Aragorn whom was a Ranger.

Not to imply Tolkien invented the Ranger concept.  Robin Hood, The Huntsman, and the likes are likely inspirations for Aragorn.

Assassins have three strikes against them: genderlocked faerie feminazies, some people don't mind any of those things but i think it will drive a lot of people who want to play the standard stealth killer away from them and into ranger.

If assassin wasn't gender locked it would be that.  If duelists weren't guinea pigs we might be third.  Also the standard warrior types are getting diluted between four very samey archtypes in the knight/templar/champion/legionaire.  While everyone who tends to default to "rogue" types and doesn't do weird races is getting pushed towards ranger.

effort and skill is only going to carry one so far if the archetype doesnt have the toolset.

When I think of Rangers, I think of the 80+ years Tolkien has had them in his books.

truth be told the issue you're discussing is actually an exceedingly challenging one.  friend or foe has been an issue for warring parties for millennia.  the point of distinctive uniforms / tabards / marching under banners is so that everyone can see whom is whom.

while removing the possibility of a name plate over players/mobs increases realism and adds a degree of challenge requiring people to be more aware of whom/what is around them, it also makes targeting and directing in group pvp extraordinarily challenging as it's extremely difficult to determine friend or foe as groups clash w/o some form of reasonably discernible shared markings.

Centaur mounts will be war elephants.  The centaurs can ride in style on the platform on top of the elephant.

We know the hunger corruption / destruction manifests as seemingly like the onset of an especially brutal winter.  Players encounter the world as spring and go through the seasons till winter-hell.

Aside from the varying rule set and random generated terrain, I wonder if there may be different themed worlds entirely?  Tropics, desert, tundra, mountains, atoll ,island chain, volcanic, expansive urban/ruins, vast underground caves/network, ..?

healers are almost never balanced in a sense that they r always required, hard to find and often just picked by guild members because someone has to do it - mmo mechanics can evolve they dont have to stay the same forever

We can see that (except for the Support Archetypes), icons are made with 2 layers :
    - The background layer seems to be the basic role, and is common to all concerned Archetypes.
    - the foreground (and the name of the icon.jpg) brings a specific clue.
And each icons has a name related to the set (right clic and view image).

The Specialists have all three a background showing a kind of emblem with Horns. That is the Specialists common Icon.
About the Foreground, the Ranger and the Assassin have both a Domino Mask : Specialist Stealth : Sp_Stealth.png.
And the Duelist has a Shovel : Specialist Burrow : sp_Burrow.png. This one matches to the exemple given in the Physics FAQ : "13 : (...) Of course the enemy may have specialists who dig through the terrain under those tanks to get to the targets."

I don't say that the Stalker will never have a Stealth. Maybe with a Discipline or a Promotion Class.
And I don't say that the Duelist will be the only one able to dig. But he could have facilities in this kind of skills.
But so far the Ranger is obviously, like the Assassin, a basic Stealth Specialist. This could change during Alphas or Betas, if Developers choose to make a different Ranger.
But we can't have better evidence than the SAME icon for both Assassin and Ranger

======== Following clues, the others Archetypes :
