Well lets assume we are not going to hold them accountable to their history (forever.prealpha.com) and just apply a normal "non AAA development time standard" to them.  You would likely see closed Alpha and closed beta together being about 1 year, 6 months of open beta (this can also be called pre-release) and then version 1.0 release.  So, whats your schedule looking like for January 2021?

Completely agree. Would also agree with just about any other idea you have or anyone has as to one of the many ways they can get to a successful game release.  There are multiple right ways to do it, and many of them do not include me logging in nightly to play the game.  Obviously I'm biassed because I want to play the game, but still, I'd rather a great game release than a 4 year alpha to go along with the 4 year prealpha.

I am also now testing the direct competitor.  I've backed that one since day one... and Pantheon as well.  Each has some really great things about them.  Each also has some serious hurdles yet to overcome.  It will be one great last MMORPG hoorah.  The race to get theirs to the market first, finished properly and backed by quick and valuable content offerings within 3 months after release.  That will be the winner IMO.

I personally don’t think that will be a problem.  Let’s assume the game will be a success.  The alpha players are going to be a very small portion of the players that play this game.  If all that played were the alpha players, the game would fail.  I think the game will succeed.

My statement was derived from the fact that even in prealpha, the super testy testing stage of the game, not only do they continue to ignore players continuous calls to make the game less tedious (or allow for temporary ways to circumnavigate the tedium), they do the opposite and continuously make the game more tedious (and seem to have no interest in fixing broken class abilities, and problems raised by the most recent char movement patch).  They also do this in the face of a gradual and increasing (ie, not overnight) decrease of player base.  So, all that in account, these changes, disregarding the mountain of negative feedback, are intentional.  Intent follows action, not some words in a pseudo-apology.  Just look at any of their live streams.  Jtodd has mentioned multiple times that they cannot do A without taking people away from B (A being what people are asking for and B being what they want to do).  The pressure of A is getting to him, and I think at this point he'd like to be free to do B.  They cannot just up and say "A is not important to us, so we're going to focus on B", but their actions have done just that.

What does this mean in the long run?  Well in the early trials we had nights where 150-200 people were trying to get into a single zone capped at 100 to do siege against each other.  The data they got from this was invaluable.  It simply could not have been obtained from a canned scenario like a bot siege or some spreadsheet or algorithm.  They raised zone caps to 150.  They’ll now never know the effects of 150 siege participants fighting at one time.  It won’t happen in Pre-Alpha, the opportunity has passed.  This and other truly valuable testing environments will have to wait until beta or maybe launch to be tested.  And that all filters into everything else as well.  Instead of 50 people crafting item_07 to make sure it works, they’ll have 2 people.  Maybe the bug did not present itself or maybe those testers did not report it.
What do they gain for not having testers?  They get to divert their attention and resources to a roadmap that completely disregards players, the playability of the game and the aspects of a game not yet implemented that will make the game a success because it’s an enjoyable interaction.  They don't need to go to the forums, don’t need community management, don’t need game ticket support etc etc (hint: Travian is gone).

I think the end result will be a good and fun game, without testers they’ve got more freedom to get to that point by whatever process/route they see best.  Also without testers they lose access to information that can only be collected when lots of real people are playing the game and pushing it and it’s hardware to its limits.  They see the first as the best choice.  Sux for us right now, but I think they game will be fun to play at some point (be that tomorrow, alpha, beta or release) and I believe many people will play it and spend money on it.  I'm looking forward to that point.

Well done on the defence, it's a lot of fun, requires a lot of coordination from both sides, so it's makes very interesting fights.
It's way more fun than if we had just stayed in our keeps and played the points game.

I think Todd is fully capable of developing the game in a way that motivates people to play.  I just think he is intentionally developing the game in a way to motivate people to NOT play.  His recent comments, for which he had to apologize but basically negated with the last sentence of the apology, show his true heart.  He wants to develop in an environment without testers.  That’s his goal.  Expect more of the same.

They have no control over they’re own game.  At this point I’m fairly certain they’ve no idea what’s the cause for the many broken abilities and certainly no idea how to fix them.  At least, that’s what their actions say.
