Base combat abilities

Recommended Posts

After watching some Siege Perilous video, I think a skill where the FM roots himself to the ground becoming immobile, immune to knockback and knockdown, takes reduced AOE damage, and then gets a significant damage buff would be perhaps perfect for the "Hammer Specialist."  That way, FM could stand at the base of a wall, Banewood, immobile siege equipment or Tree of Life and smack away with better effect than other archetypes.  It could also take him maybe 3-5 seconds to get into and out of this mode, so that he can't switch all willy nilly.

Putting crafting specialties in disciplines seems like the way to go, instead of forcing crafters to play a certain archetype.

Yup--giving the FM an inherent crafting advantage would simply force all crafters to play FM (which no one likes). That being stated, skills that have a crafting flavor or inspiration could fit the FM; an example might be a hot bar skill to create some sort of turret or wall for in combat offensive or defensive buffs respectively.

Blair said this recently in response to a question about Druid orbs:

We may talk about it at some point, the "keep track of number of objects" in the world tech we pushed off until we build Forgemaster.

Which begs the question, what objects will the Forgemaster create?

i know they don't want to get tied to any statements but i wish they would go through the list all the remaining archetypes and give a bare bones design description of their general archetype vision

e.g. Frostweaver is a short range melee magic user with a focus on crowd control powers

e.g. the templar is a dodge tank with a 2 handed sword that uses fire powers

etc

You jerks had me excited as in there was new info. Whatever the forgemaster becomes  it better be bad ass or there will be grudges written in blood.

Sorry about that. I just figured it was something that many people didn't see, so I added it for speculation.

I also thought of the Overwatch guy, and likewise hope the Forgemaster isn't the same. It seems like it has to be something tied to his specialization. Turrets don't really make sense unless they are shooting arrows or something. I'm pretty sure they said the Duelist pistol is as far as they intend to go as far as technology goes.

Golems would be a good choice, but will they make Forgemasters a pet class? They said during the AMA that the Forgemaster name will probably change, but I forget what they called them. I need to look it up. Maybe there is some clue there as to where they are going with them.

Edit: This is what Todd said about them in the AMA:

We've had a lot of talk about moving this guy from "forgemaster" over to "battlerager", as we don't want force every crafter in the game to be a dwarf. the thought is to move the crafting skills and recipes out of the archetypes and into disciplines. I'm also a big fan of dwarven warriors (playing one now in a 5e game) and I think we could make it fit the narrative really well.

The name Battlerager doesn't really suggest anything regarding what types of objects they would create.

They called him a Battlerager. And I don't think he'd be a pet class per se if the golems only lasted a limited time.

Nod, I thought they said somewhere no pet classes but could be wrong. From the early KS vids of the Forgemaster it seem to be a melee with short range ae dps / knockdown with medium to short range attack with the hammer but I know were a long away off from those days.

Well, they said you could become a pet class through Disciplines. I just thought I'd be cool if a stone dwarf could make stone golems to provide temporary support/tanking/DPSing.

I think they meant no pet class as a base or main archetype mechanic. But like other said there will be taming and pets that everyone will have access to through disciplines and such.

THERE ARE SOME COOL IDEAS HERE!

I think I like the idea of the following:

  • PBAOE Hammer smashes. (Ranged around the user, with a slight immobilization to the user, but a stun to those around them)
  • Ground Smash which raises columns of stone into the air. (With the added effect tossing the target in the air)
  • Chant Twisting (The ability to keep buffs which effect a range around the caster going)
  • Hammer Spin Like a Top would be neat as well.

I feel like this is a class that would do a TON of damage, at the cost of its stability. Use of powers should be well timed, but should cost the user dearly if they use them at the wrong time.

These are a couple of my favorite Overwatch characters (especially Reinhardt).  If the Forgemaster ends up as a MMORPG mix of these two, I think I'd be pretty happy.  Leave out the big shield and turrets, of course.

Let's see, how about:

Armor buff placeables like wisps for the druid

A "Hammer down" AOE knockdown ability

A Hammer toss ability (like Reinhardt's E)

A "Molten Core" buff with increased attack speed and hps

While Reinhardt has that charge, maybe the Forgemaster could have the opposite--an ability that makes him immobile but also deadly to the first guy who gets too close.

hey bois!

They just revealed that the forgemaster will be a defensive "pet" class, spawning turrets and sentries. The developement of the forgemaster has been pushed back, because they wanted to have certain mmo aspects (e.g. terrain and wall destruction) in the game before throwing the archetype in, for testing.

Quite interesting, if i may say, the whole thing reminded me of engineer back in WAR which was one of the most interesting classes of the game. Also Torbjorn :P

Ya not sure how I feel about an "Engineer" "defensive" "pet" class for an archetype I am really excited about. The WAR Engineer class was a great class just not my style of play.

thats true. It is defo not what i had in mind for the dwarf either. They also mentioned at some point during the stream, that some promotion archetypes will open up new roles for the archetype, so we might find something that suits us there.
