The Big Reveal: Crows and vessels - Official discussion thread

Recommended Posts

A question that didn't get answered from the above stream (from Courant101, I believe):

I would really like to know how this will be handled, as well.

Agreed, characters are just commodity now. No i don't believe an ethereal ghost jumping into corpses is a character in my opinion.

I know how I plan on handling it: curling up in a ball and crying my eyes out after my vessel decays to permadeath.

Hey, you'll still be a blue, glowing crow-like ghost!  You can float around, menace ghost-corn fields and possibly even travel forward in time thousands of years and evolve into a futuristic "pod".  Boo-caw!  Boo-caw!

Having now watched the video too, Mad scientist Tully = awesome.

Has thought been given to whether the vessel mechanic will run afoul of Chinese cultural censorship of undead themes?

Oh snap, some political manuevering needs being done.

Hopefully a vessel will not be just another inventory item. How big is my backpack, Warehouse 13 sized?

I should be able to move an empty vessel the same archetype as mine around without damaging it, but that should encumber me.

Maybe I can put a thrall in it and lead the corpse around like a packpig?

I should be able load several bodies onto a wagon and transport them to my repair POI (lab in any stronghold, Village tavern, mausoleum in a graveyard?) or to an embargo vault.

In campaigns where I can pray to get my recently killed vessel back, how long does it take  for the body to disappear, leaving behind the items my god won't be letting me have back with the regenerated vessel?

My biggest question about this big change in the CF concept:

If training 3 toons at once was my only reason to use VIP tickets, why do I want to redeem them after launch?

This impacts the VIP token as a game currency also.

I think the K-Mart of MMO's already exists!  And it ain't us!   :)

Simple don't allow your body to die. = Get gud or get rekt.

The body is what your playing you make what it is so don't get it killed... Again.

I am a bit skeptical about the system, but definitely willing to see it through. Anything that adds to the crafting part of the game is a positive in my book. I am part of the minority that is really not happy that this system essentially takes the impact of character choice and customization and minimizes its impact and importance. I understand that skill training will still be important and play a big part in what you are good at or not, but being able to just go find a minotaur corpse or use the one you brought with you instead of having one in your guild or quickly allying with one to join your group seems easy and lazy. Just have to wait and see how the system works out.

That's a statistical improbability, also why would i play a game if i never died? Sounds boring to me. Are we going to see weapon/armour crafters prioritize characters that are stronger/rarer than their counterparts? You betcha, even if the wielder of the wearers skin is less skilled than others, it'll be that you must X to run this dungeon or gtfo we see in every MMO to date.

Sorry for the edits -_- my fingers are tongue tied.

The comic page posted with the reveal has the crow saying "with every death, I remember less."  Is this just the crow talking about his original life or do we have some skill loss after death?

This does reduce the relative value of VIP: old model, VIP was training 9 skills at a time vs 3 on a standard account, while in the new model VIP trains 4 skills at once versus 2 on a standard. So the gap is narrower.

But it's still an important gap. If you're on a base account you get zero out-of-class training unless you pause the training of the vessel you're actually in. With VIP you can add versatility in two other classes while your continuing to progress your current vessel at full speed. The ability to switch between 3 different professions with no loss of activated skill points will give VIP players valuable flexibility.

With that said, the value of 3 standard boxes vs VIP is even more lopsided now, since you can have 3 different general training schemes in addition to your three different class builds. At no monthly cost.

There won't be any skill loss after death. I'm sure they would have mentioned it if there was.

I wonder if they could implement some sort of Archetype Specialist status, in which the dwindling population of people who still value the last three letters in this genre's acronym could forgo the possession of vessels in favor of sticking with a certain archetype? Perhaps, a crow is so inextricably interwoven with certain vessel that they cannot be parted, even in death?  Maybe, this sacrifice's profound restrictions could come with certain sensible perks?

They're not corpses, they are happy spirit blue prints!

Last FAQ is:  "One of my Kickstarter rewards was “additional character slots”.  Now that you are using vessels instead of dedicated slots, what happens to those rewards?"

Can't we just start with 6 free vessels that we get to pick by archetype?  For example, I pick 2x Ranger, 2x Stalker, 1x Knight, and 1x Champion vessels.  Wouldn't this meet the intent of the original Kickstarter reward?

Sounds like it.  Think of it like a character, except your spirit determines your skill level (but could be capped by your body)

Ok, that leads me to another question. If new archetypes as they are introduced are supposed to be accessible to VIP players a month before non-VIP, how will this work with the new system? If they're crafted or found, what's stopping a non-VIP from getting them? If they're delivered to an account in-box, how many do they get? If they get it looted, can a non-VIP loot it and use it early? If the vessel is lost, is the VIP player out of luck?

I am also struggling with how a vessel can be an inventory item.  How do I carry around an extra body or two?  If I get killed, the victors can loot my extra vessels I was carrying.

From what I glean from the FAQ and OP, my vessels are actually stored in a tomb and not carried on me? Then what prevents my tomb from getting looted?

If I recall, Blair said on C & C that the Crow would have access to the import embargo inventory. I'm pretty sure the extra vessels you bring in are safe. Otherwise, as you've pointed out, they would all get looted and there would be no point in bringing extras. However, any vessels you loot during the campaign would be subject to looting if you die while carrying them (from what understand at least)

I'm not going to lie, I'm not super happy about this. It seems like there's no BASE character like there is in EVE. When I play EVE, I'm not necessarily attached to my ships, because they blow up like crazy, but I still do have an avatar to go back to. If there's no base character, no base appearance for the character, everything becomes impersonal and...Kinda bland, honestly. I have no reason to care about my vessels, and I have nothing to make an emotional attachment to.

In addition, please don't make skills like EVE. The main, huge issue with EVE is the skill progression. EVE is an amazing game locked behind months and months of initial down time when it is very difficult to do anything fun. I don't have a problem with downtime skill training, but don't make half the game locked behind skills that take days and weeks to get a single level of.
