Yeah.. the whole circle and line skill trees design has literally been used millions of times in RPGs or any game with some type of skill progression.

No only is it daunting and terrifying for first time viewers - it is also actually really elegantly designed and laid out.

 

in contrast that WoW example looks amateur, messy and janky.

Some things just start to dominate the field, because they turned out to work very well. Sometimes to a point where it becomes state of the art. I wouldn't say, for example, that all car companies stole the idea of the steering wheel from whoever came up with this in the first place; or shoe laces and stuff like that. It's the same with skill trees, I would say. There are modifications, though the basic concept stays the same. However, it is a different kind of story, if someone simply copies every single aspect of something.
