Fae, Sexism, And So On.

Recommended Posts

You know what, to see an end to this topic I'd like them to have extreme sexual dimorphism in the fae race, where the fae female is more or less humanoid but the male is some lovecraftian horror, which can wiggle it's way to freedom after its birth despite the best efforts of a half dozen midwives trying their best to put the thing down. Then you could introduce fae lore like this:

Male Human Knight : M'lady, I assure you not all men are so depraved.

Female Fae Assassin : You're male in your species? But where are your hideous...

Fae Male: r̸͕̻̦̮ͬ͋͂̉̓͆͡ą̥̥̙͈̭͌ͦͯͦẘ̛͚̼̮̩̙͙ͧ̍͒͘͟r̗̺̞͇̦̪̻͍̈́̓̾ͅ!̱͎̫̭̆ͩ̆͑̅͒͡

̵̪̯͚̗̪ͤ̑ͦ͟

Male Human Knight : By the gods what is that hideous thing!

Female Fae Assassin: Run! It's in mating frenzy!

<Much stabbing later>

Male Human Knight : (cough) M'lady, I fear I might be mortally wounded.. OH MY GOD THE PAIN!

Female Fae Assassin: It seems you've been pierced by his seed quills. A fae woman in such a situation will soon find herself with child, and I can feel the change coming upon me already, but among outsiders it's almost always fatal.

Male Human Knight : UGH, I CAN FEEL MY INSIDES DISSOLVING!

Female Fae Assassin: I can give you the sweet release of death, it'd be a mercy...

Hopefully then we could put an end to people trying to start fights over gender politics in crowfall.

This is great! I love it! Lol

Just a thought: can we stop being so offended by people being offended? Instead of shouting down or making fun of people who bring up social issues, can we engage them respectfully and try to consider viewpoints beyond our own?

I think everyone deserves to be able to take their chosen form of entertainment seriously. We do ourselves a disservice if we say "it's just a game."

*chuckle* I think we can suggest whatever we want, but I hope in case of lore stay adamant to their vision. Aesthetics is important, whether people will read lore or not. Heh, I hope there will be meaningful connection between lore and skillset of archetypes. Though I have to agree that in PvP games few read lore if at all.

Hehe, the assassin gets the "murder helpless creature" skill. Useful on bunnies and babies alike! Because we all know what bunnies grow up to be:

Is the Assassin class sexist? Yes.

It treats the genders with radical differences, which is sexist by definition.

Is that OK? Yes.

This is a fantasy game about make believe characters for the primary purpose of entertainment. If the artists involved want to explore politically incorrect topics that is their option. However it can and will affect the consumers impression of the product.

The assassin class is sexist, no ifs and or buts. It is also an evil class according to our modern interpretation of morality. They commit murder, sexual assault, and oppression in the name of preventing potential evil.

Personally I think that having a dark lore even one involving murdering babies and such gives the assassin archtype an interesting feel to it. if it was "same ol, same ol" I'd feel a little let down but its a dark class. these people go out and kill others, why not give them a dark lore to back where they get their drive from.

I personally don't really care about set genders, I don't really care that this particular clan of elves or whatever cull the men, but let's be honest it's fairly poorly written

This. Tbh, my issue with it is that it's poorly made poorly made socks writing. It's the fact that the writing is so cliche that I find offensive.

I'd kind of rather ACE not make any lore for this game. Nevertheless, if they're going to have lore, I want it to be good. So they should hire an actual writer to rethink their lore so that it isn't cliched crap.

EDIT: to avoid socks

Does every archtype have to be "good", the fae can have a brutal backstory of endless wars and they where the "evil" once in said war, but the gods chose them to fight for them because they are good at it. Who wouldn´t pick Sauron to fight for you against the hunger if they could, doesnt mean he aint evil.

The Fae use what ever tools they can to win a battle, if being sexy helps why not exploit it. Anyway I´m going in the wrong direction now, the point is don´t assume that everyone was the good guys and are now fighting the great evil.

I was a trifle disappointed when I read the description of the Fae Assassin. There seems to be a general notion that these characters all fight for heaven, and are themselves paragons of virtue. The Fae, however, seemingly fall into an trope which was tired decades ago. The demonization of men as brutes, needing to be killed at birth, is a description which requires a quite broad generalization about the sex, and it's not altogether rational.

Of course, the capture, Gank, and subsequent murder of men, made systemic by their society, is a reduction which I find truly heinous. That's a level of objectification which I think might be hard to reach outside of fetish pornography.

What disappoints me is not the thing itself- I've certainly read good stories where blatant and systemic sexism played a role- but this particular character, sitting beside other characters with noble aims, and not painted as starkly villainous, seems inapposite to me. The acts which she endorses are clearly evil, the society she comes from is clearly evil. The others, with the exception of the Legionnaire perhaps (there's an argument in there) seem to be virtuous, self-sacrificing, noble.

Of course, I'm not suggesting that it be changed. Requesting an artist to censor their vision because you find part of it distasteful is something which has become over-popular these days. I'm simply pointing out something which I find unusual, and I'm wondering if perhaps anyone has a better perspective than I do on the matter.

 On your opinion:

1) What's wrong w/ fetish pornography?

2) I don't really mind if this is your point of view, but you should try explaining why it matters to you; rather than saying it's just "unusual". You've clearly stated you find it ascetically distasteful. Why is this so when it apparently is not in other cases. Your explanation that you know of other stories and lores, in which this is incorporated well in, is merely begging the question. Instead you seem to jump to a completely different point entirely (i.e. The male character lores are upright and noble while the female one is ruthless and evil.) to which the following question needs to be asked: So what?

3) I feel slightly compelled to note that "objectification" is a bogus term that really doesn't have a place in a serious conversation about sexism. It's just too vague a term in that it can literally mean anything regarding the relationship between two entities. Any linguist worth his salt could tell you that the passive construction makes it absolutely meaningless when trying to make a point about the treatment of someone or something.

4) Thanks for not going down a censorship route. I really think that tropes, typecasting, and stereotypes are something that deserves to be discussed in regards to entertainment. Not because of their overall impact on people, but rather as an sub-discussion about artistic/creative representation of ideas in a story. It's a valid point to say that tropes are overused, in accurate, and un-engaging to our Epicurean senses. If you really believe that you need to make a larger point about society and behavior, I think you'll probably have better luck participating in the nauseating conversations taking place in the cesspool of an echochamber "Feminist Frequency".

I like this point very much. We see them on Vent, in forums, in public spaces. You know, relations of the MRA dudes who live on Reddit and 4Chan, Gamergaters and rrrape-deniers. Those are likely the sort of people who need to whine over the fae backstory. A strong female character is always perceived as a threat by certain types of people.

Life must be difficult for an entitled white male in the 3rd world. So much to fear, so little time.

I find it interesting that there's such a kerfuffle over the Fae story.

Just sharing a gender with these kind of people is pretty distressing to be honest.. Highly disturbing to me that anyone would react negatively over a piece of game lore for these reasons.

I like this. Do they kill their babies because they are custarded up? Or are they custarded up because they have to kill their babies?

The answer is pretty obvious. They are insanely jelly of dwarfs. Being as how the dwarfs don't reproduce (most likely out of choice), and the fact that the dwarfs help keep the worlds alive. The faes on the other hand feel extremely threatened by the fact that the dwarfs help prevent the hunger whilst the faes in their ruthless murderings in their lopsided ideology of culling off everything to prevent potential evil indeed promotes the hunger. Indeed its this insane jealousy that leads them go crazy and murder their own children out of a violent wrath that they can never usurp the dwarfs and their complete monopoly over fire and life. So they only way they react to the fact they killed their own children in fits of violent anger? The only rational way any other race would, with more pointless infanticide and mass murder sprees of everyone else around them.

Edit: Made the paragraph flow make more sense.

I find it interesting that there's such a kerfuffle over the Fae story.

I wasn't aware people like this existed outside of hugboxes

from some of the comments I've been reading, in particular on the Fae forums I've started to wonder if I made the wrong choice in backing this game, I thought WoW had a silly community but I'm wondering if this one will be even worse

People like me or people like I mentioned in my post?

If it's the people who are angry over the Fae story, well, yeah. I am also bemused by the whining; who would ever have thought the Amazon culture would cause such a kerfuffle. I just put it down to a general discomfort of 1st worlders  when confronted by a paradigm that is obviously opposite their own, and that raises interesting points for cultural examination.

If you're talking about me, well. I love strong female characters, especially powerful ones with interesting back stories that point to the mists of time and our own Amazon mythos. And I like hugs. And I'm a feminist, a real one. And WoW isn't wow'ish to me. So. Lemme know if we need to have a scuffle over it. I do enjoy a nice session of verbal fisticuffs with a worthy foe.

If it makes you feel any better, I also second guessed my contribution to Crowfall a few weeks ago. I was discouraged by the general tone of the forums; there were some racist and mysogynist comments/discussions that turned me way off, and I wondered if I really wanted to back a game full of asshats.  Ultimately I resolved to contribute to the KS; the forum is small but the game is huge, so I never need encounter some of the poorly made socks I see here once we have a game to play. Plus, I've never been one to give my toys to asshats and bullies. Stubborn that way :D

Regards,

Iri~
