What Is A Specialist To You?

Recommended Posts

I think a specialist is any unit that has accepted serious flaws in order to be great at some game role.

For example, a scout is a specialist. He's really good at stealth, finding other players, and usually destroying one opponent from surprise. But that scout should be weaker than a tank in a stand-up fight and weaker than a mage with magic.

I think the K-Mart of MMO's already exists!  And it ain't us!   :)

I think chancellor's description is accurate. Given that the Fae Assassin is an Assassin, my guess is that she's designed to eliminate particular enemy combatants. If we really are using systems as they've shown, then we'll be up against any number of guilds competing for resources. The best way to kill a snake is by cutting off the head, though this is typically the most dangerous part. That's where our Assassin comes in.

Tell me your thoughts. I say offense utility.

This might not necessarily be what it means to me now, but it's certainly what I'd LIKE it to mean.

Specialist for offensive utility with stuns/debuffs/slows/roots and all that jazz and Support characters for defensive stuff, buffs/shields/dispels and so on.

Fae is a silent stealthy assassin. She's a specialist because she has the skills to take her enemies by surprise.

She would be hidden so well with those black wings to encapsulate her at night. I'll take it as a given that you would use her mostly by night or dark places.

She would have eagle eyes too.

Hence the term Specialist as it applies to this situation.

Having something for every situation is counterpoint to being a specialist.

I posted in another topic that stealth classes will probably be based around mobility (check) and confusion (traps, maybe?). In other words, battlefield assassins, with more of an emphasis on support than damage.

Examples:

Infiltrating a castle and opening the gates for your allies during a siege.

Dropping something like a flashbang on a group of enemies so your allies can mop them up.

Ambushing exposed caravans or players.

Slowing, stunning, or otherwise debilitating enemies during combat.

I think people are really limiting the possibilities of an Assassin too much by thinking in terms of traditional mmorpgs. Yea I'm sure they'll be able to:

  1. Take players out of a fight
  2. Kill of strategic targets
  3. Infiltrate a base and drop a gate or w/e as mentioned above

But we're talking about a game where (supposedly) information and strategic leverage are premium commodities. In risk you can't read your opponents mind so there's no reason to try, you can't send a spy to listen in on Mr.Russia's strategy because there's no real communication going on like that. So you do three things; you observe what they're doing, you react to what there doing, and you act to further your own strategy. There's nothing really beyond these three points, there are certain measures of diplomatic strategy you can attempt (though it falls within one of the three aforementioned actions) but they're limited in what the game actual provides to facilitate such things. An assassin given the right toolset in crowfall, I believe, has a much wider range of capability.

Take for example these scenarios:

  1. An assassin is hired by an archduke, their mission? Find if the duchess below him is planning a coup. In the midst of night the assassin makes their way onto the duchess' settlement and sneaks past the guards below tucking themselves away in a corner of her room. Almost a half hour later the duchess enters with a confident, the assassin waits and listens, observes. The duchess hands the confident a missive and sends him on his way, unknown to him, however, the assassin shadows waiting until he makes his way off her land to a secluded spot and BAM. From his inventory the assassin loots the missive and returns the plans to stage a coup to their archduke in exchange for a handful of coin.
  2. A lone messenger walks the streets of the opposing factions courtyard, the guards escorting him brandish their weapons as they travel. Through the halls and to the throne room they walk silently until they stand before the king. The messenger watches the clock as he speaks 'This is of course the era of change..' he pauses as the seconds roll over 'And with it the end of our alliance!' he draws a knife as sappers run to the gates attempting to blow holes open in their fortifications. They, along with the messenger fall easily, baffled they search the messengers body to find naught but a simple note. It reads 'I'm coming for you' and bears the seal of a legendary assassin. The knights scramble to secure the perimeter but what they don't know is this assassin had slipped in among the chaos. A week later the messengers faction sieges the castle, defenses are at a premium and the lions share of guards are fighting to hold the gate. The king is ushered into a secluded room his best guards stationed outside lest the defenses fall and a last stand need be made. The king takes a breath of relief as the siege is pushed back only to be greeted by a lone dagger in his back.
  3. An assassin takes under the cloak of night a solitary quest, infiltration and information retrieval. They're an information broker of sorts and they need to keep their business running. They slip in the dukes keep between the guards shifts and takes out the colors of his faction, dressed to deceive they log in the next day and begin their sting. We know that most of the help in the keep running supplies and assisting in crafts won't be able to discern their face and name. 'I'm a player from the eternal worlds, this is my first faction vs faction campaign' they feign, the story's convincing enough to the new players doing grunt work. Nights pass and the assassin learns the keeps in and outs, the secret passage ways and the patrols of the guards. They gather information from heresay and bore subtle holes in the keeps defense before their time there comes to an end. They sneak out as easily as they came, and the next week an army, the highest bidder, approaches the dukes keep from the east.

Obviously a lot of this is limited with what they give us to work with, but from what they've told us so far I feel like this game is going to have avenues to explore outside of outright brawls. If the assassin is a archtype who's job it is to pick out targets in a fight, in other words just another melee dps, I'll be sorely disappointed.

Specialist is a rank in the U.S. Army under the pay grade of E-4.

You are so incredibly helpful, CYT. I don't know how I ever managed to do anything before we met. I was just bumbling my way through life, all lost-like. Thank you. My blessing cup runneth over.

Checked this forum because of this question :)

I hoped devs should have answered, but maybe it's a bit too soon.

As there is difference between the classes (tank, DPS, specialist, support), I guess the specialist has not damages as strong as the DPS (the Legionnaire), and don't have spells usefull for help allies like the support.

So as you said it before, like common assassin/rogues, he must have some skills like stun, smoke, stealth... the tools who make him a disruptive element in fights, more than a pure DPS :)

I totally agree, I love role playing, and since that is what we will be doing...it would really suck if any particular character overshadows in a realm where it really shouldn't. Sure a tank is more tanky, but a assassin can slice and dice super fast allowing to take down a small crowd with some ease.

A specialist is anyone that says they'll be at your home between noon and 4, but shows up at 7.  The next day.
