Word Filters, Really?

Recommended Posts

Potty-mouth Academic here. Most of us curse like sailors, even the ones who look like sweet, dottering old ladies and gentlemen. BUT, the majority of academics are aware of common courtesies when in public spaces. At least until we've had a few rounds at the pub, then well, um. What happens at the pub stays at the pub.

And sometimes in the alley out back.  Booze.  Making idiots of men and women for millennia.

Well anyway that came off as bit harsh and snobby, I just see gaming forums as pretty relaxed place for banter and discussions, maybe taunting a few enemies later on when the game's released. Writing on these boards is usually accompanied by a few whiskies and I just don't see the need to keep things too civil at all times :) is there any age-restrictions decided for the game yet btw?

The Something Awful forums use word substitution for their profanity filter. The f-word gets changed to "love/loving/lover" for instance. It has a tendency to make you sound more pleasant the more you swear.

Those filters are only in effect if you're unregistered/not logged in. Once you login there are no profanity filters.

Well, so guys, this is actually a good thing imho. Just like cash said, you won't be getting warning points for attacking someone with profanity right? But also, now you can "technically" get away with using it in your post. Because everyone will know what you truly mean when you say "You are an unpleasant person."

You're an unpleasant individual.

Don't make me get the hose!

You're going to cross dress as punishment?

The only filter/change that took me off guard was when I used the word that means nonconsensual sex in the gamergate thread and it was changed to caress.

I can see how that could be funny in a PvP sense but in every other way it's just creepy/sick.

Wait, words are being filtered? Hold on, I'm testing the ones I usually use to see if they got removed. Crap, poorly made socks, damn.

EDIT: Okay, so only poorly made socks was filtered. Glad crap and damn are still there xD
