cemya 873 Share Posted February 11, 2015 (edited) Maybe it is too much to ask for, but I hope they go easy on Steampunk. It is not that primitive gunpowder weapons and Leonardo da Vinci style inventions don't have their place in medieval/Renaissance history (from which High Fantasy derives much inspiration). It is that all too often in MMORPGs they become a slippery slope that leads to cars, particle beam weapons, etc. A low-technology Dark Ages setting seems more in line for the ruthless world they are creating. bahamutkaiser 2,378 Share Posted February 11, 2015 I'm hoping they stick to low explosive technology on the primary build of the game, magic and monsters make up a sufficient amount of world complexity without emphasis on technology. The technologies present would be more attractive if they drew from magic machines and Archimedes type inspirations. potatomcwhiskey and courant101 2 Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes... karast 47 Share Posted February 11, 2015 I don't mind seeing early black powder weaponry like muskets / bombs / grenades / cannons, and even simple rockets. But I would like to avoid the cars, robots, lazers, spaceships, machine guns, heavy artillery, airships, submarines, motorcycles, jet packs, and helicopters that seem to slowly inundated a lot of fantasy MMO's post launch. I would probably be happier to see these are more siege related weaponry than as archetype weaponry. sneaky_squirrel, Getz, JonathanCid and 1 other
Peppermint 5 Share Posted February 11, 2015 I agree for the low-tech, it has it's place in a medieval fantasy but steampunk would somehow clash a bit too much.
dwarfurious 402 Share Posted February 11, 2015 If they were going to go the Steampunk route, we'd see it in the Dwarves.
flex 983 Share Posted February 11, 2015 (edited) Just go all out and air drop AK-47s and Glocks into the campaign. Replace lumber mills and iron mines with Payday Loan and Pawn shops. Just imagine it, Centaur drive-bys. Srsly tho. No steampunk, no top hats, no steam powered fleshlights, no monacles, no gunpowder. teekey 1,075 Share Posted February 11, 2015 Now what is wrong with a top hat and monocle, my good sir? flex 983 Share Posted February 11, 2015 (edited) Now what is wrong with a top hat and monocle, my good sir? Whats wrong with this? Aside from being from a terrible, terrible movie, its kind of out of keeping with the visual aestetic that Shadowbane or Crowfall seems to be going for, right? Sunglasses, blue jeans, a jersey and a snap-back cap just don't fit an environment of medieval fantasy, right? I personally feel the victorian elements of steampunk are equally out of place. 420th post bonus: http://youtu.be/AUvS8r0jfmQ?t=1m2s Edited February 11, 2015 by flex bahamutkaiser

For a game that's especially close to the crafting scene, it's not healthy... Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes... delghinn 35 Share Posted February 11, 2015 yeah I'd rather 'advancing tech' things were based more on dark magic and recovered artifacts than whimsical gadgetry. mounts are generally the most flashy and noticeable on 'tech creep'. mounts would be more interesting if they didnt pop out of nothing and disappear into nothing for no reason. perhaps have mounts be supernatural which would explain their summoning and dismissing. perhaps a necromatic item that pulls bones out of the ground and assembles a cobbled together horse or an artifact that calls forth twisting shadows that coalesce into an ominous inky black horse or something that causes a pillar of fire and ash and embers horse appears etc.. I suppose the most common with their being gate / portals could be a portal to one's stable and retrieve / dismiss a normal horse that's happy to not be bones, shadows, or embers.. lol

Ugh, yes agree with OP. In keeping with the graphics we've seen, I'd prefer my Steampunk lightly tossed and no salad dressing thanks.
scribbles 1,380 Share Posted February 11, 2015 No modern technology is definitely the way to go. I've not seen anything in any of the graphics we've seen so far to suggest they'd move to a more technologically advanced environment. [@--(o.O)@]
oberon 2,473 Share Posted February 11, 2015 siege related stuff, maybe a wagon to help transport supplies, crafting related stuff like a blacksmith. That's enough technology for me. The rest traditional might and magic
