Please share your experience/thoughts on each spec

Recommended Posts

Just rolled ranger and I’m having a hard time deciding which path I want to go. I know there is always more to a class/spec then you read from the talents. I was wondering if people could share their thoughts. I’m more concerned with playstyle and flow and that sort of thing as we know balance swings will bring a ton of changes in that department.  Feel free to speak on power level and how the spec does in solo and group play. Can’t hurt to know the current state of things.

Really easy to decide on Ranger

1. You want your main damage to come from bows - Archer (range)

2. You want to be scrappier, wear mail and be balanced between starting fights from range and finishing in melee or vice versa - Warden (balanced)

3. You want to be a stealther with you main weapons melee, range just to apply a debuff (bit weird because you also have better traps... like a sapper) - Brigand (melee/range traps into finish)

Archer, your main group ranged DPS, Focus fire to delete enemy.  (legolas)

Warden, anti stealth escort warden have the durability to fight assassins and duelist one on one. and the detection ability for force them to fight.   ( Antisubmarine frigate)

Brigand, set bombs to to disrupt enemy moments snare/root enemy running away from your group provide melee burst damage. ( Drizit)

Archer - turned out to be a bust right now. Damage is tied into not moved and charging a slow auto attack in hope to proc double shots, which never seem to proc. And the boost doesn't seem to be much. And you have to move around too much. Nice for larger fights when you can snipe in the back, but can't really tell if you're doing anything. Getting drop on Assassin or other squishy does allow for the chance to do a lot of damage quick. If you can position to shoot freely you're good.

Warden - Swapped to Warden. You get built in stealth detect power, which is pretty amazing, frees up disc slot. You gain a LOT more resistances, survivability, mail armor and barely lose anything in range damage. Instead you gain a lot more fighting capability in be able to fight those in your face in melee, or at least provided with some nice debuffs and ability to disengage.

As a loooooong-time Ranger player across many different games, I have to say that the entire suite of ranged powers are just really unattractive for me right now. The immobile turret/cannon concept just isn't something I want to play and I don't think it fits thematically with what many people expect of a Ranger. On top of that, I think it directly impedes the core concept of class being a "switch" class that can weave between multiple styles of combat (melee & ranged). The ranged tray is just far too rigid to support that kind of mobility needed to realize that flexible gameplay in real scenarios.  Those problems are amplified by the Archer path.

Well i only played Brigand so far and i'm loving it.
Yet i have problems to find my place in bigger battles like Siege or bigger scaled fights. I find it hard to get a good positioning and actually "do something". Even if i have the option to just stay range and shoot into the enemy group it doesn't feel like you are achieving anything with it since your main damage comes from melee/bombs which is kinda hard to do since you are very squishy with a low hp-pool and wearing leather. I often find myself staying at the backline supporting the healers and people that try to get to safety (creating some space with bombs and guarding them a bit)

I'm still not sure if it's supposed to be played like this but thats the only thing where i found myself beeing useful in these kind of fights.

Maybe more people could share your opinions/thoughts and tell how they play their Specs in these situations. Would be interesting.

I haven't tried the other specs but seeing the skills that come with it and reading the experience you guys have/had doesn't make it really appealing.

I am playing warden and I am pretty ok playing big and low scale battles. I kinda use more bow than mele but siege battles have different moments where you can be very usefull.
