Dust-based Economy and Faction Sacrifice

Recommended Posts

What if we completely move away from gold and switch to an all Ethereal Dust economy. Guards now would require dust instead of gold, vendors are paid in dust trading is done with dust. In order to account for this higher need for dust what if you had the option to sacrifice items regardless of quality level for dust instead of exp.

Another idea is that each faction(later guilds and groups) can sacrifice items and pool those sacrifice points together to earn some sort of godly boon, or maybe as some sort of Hail Mary nuke that can be applied to the lead faction(sort of like a godly blue shell of death) at the beginning of each season.

Godly boon, kind of like this does

Golden Dragon Altar Relic
8,000 CRO*

Pay tribute to the Queen of Wyrms, Lyessa with the Golden Dragon Altar Relic. This relic can be placed in your guild or personal Kingdom. When you sacrifice rare metals to this relic, for a short period of time, players may receive temporary magical benefits.

*All relics can also be found and scavenged from the Campaign Worlds.
*Note that buildings, parcels and decorative items may only be used in the Eternal Kingdoms.

Quote

"Gold, it is the coin of mortals, traded between people for the simple novelties of life.  Yet it is Ethereal Dust, the fragments of a soul itself, that is the coin of gods.  For while mortals toil with material desires and physical creations, it is the gods immortal that toy with the lives and essences of life found within all mortals.  For one as non-materialistic as that, gold has no conceptual weight, but a soul is everything."

Yeah, things are fine as is.

I had thought this as well. It would make sense in that you wouldn't be buying guards you would be resurrecting them. You wouldn't be concerned as to why a wolf has dust on it. At first I felt that the change to all dust would make more sense fitting into the story of the game and would be easier from a design mechanics standpoint as you have one less resource to try and account/balance for. It would streamline harvesters being able to purchase extra materials from vendors and trading with crafters. Then I thought about an issue that could arise with bots just sitting there farming dust from trees and how easy it would be to farm in EK's . At this point I am no longer sure if going to a pure dust economy would solve more issues than it would cause. The balancing headache that would come from this is probably why this change won't happen.

Gold isnt impacted by training and node type, dust and embers are.  You can farm thousands of dust a day as a lumberjack using just a basic shovel and knotwood trees.  Nothing else comes close or is as easy.  It would be bad design to tie the main barter resource to one particular harvesting path and then effectively require people to go that route if they wanted the games chief monetary resource.  Gold should be equally available to all characters regardless of harvesting path and keep its value through all tiers of play.

The thing is dust can be gathered from all harvesting options. If dust is a resource, it makes sense for those trained to harvest the resource should have an easier time getting the resource. There may be ways to fix the lumberjack problem though, you could nerf the amount of dust dropped from basic nodes or balance the amount dropped based on availabilty, If dust dropped from mobs at the same amount as gold used to that would help a bit. Also if EKs actually cost Dust to open/keep open, like rent I think that hamper people firing up an EK just to farm dust, it would also be another dust sink.

O dust CAN be gathered from all resources but the amount that comes from doing knotwood is leagues ahead of everything else in sheer speed.  It’s by far the most efficient way.  If dust becomes the main currency then the methods of farming the main currency of the game need a hard balance pass and more opportunities to get it.
