ACE Q&A for January - Official discussion thread

NEW WORLD

Between the official FAQ and videos on the site, there is a good run down of what the game has to offer. It isn't in-depth breakdown of everything, but how many AAA games do that? Pre-launch is usually pretty sparse until closer to launch or even never. Fans of popular games usually fill the void, such as the more detailed link I posted that appears accurate from info available. There are plenty of in-game videos going over game play and systems when content creators were allowed to post them.

@Doomshadow video and several like it cover the post-alpha changes that came from this interview https://mein-mmo.de/new-world-interview-open-world. As beta and launch are fast approaching, I'm assuming we'll see more gameplay and more details revealed to the public.

They are ~5 months from launch so not surprising that pre-orders are a focus. This is all pretty standard stuff for anyone that has played MMOs in the last 20+ years.

After playing in Alpha, no clue where they pulled their wishful thinking 10k servers from, be it performance or just enough world/content to support such a number. 1k seems low, but they can always adjust. Much rather have a smaller experience running well then the alternative.

Crowfall's FAQ was very outdated for years and has/had details on things that don't seem planned prior to launch. They've been pushing years for money since Kickstarter (nature of crowdfunding). Optimization has been poor for a game supposedly supporting "large" scale siege and experiences. Can't count the number of times I've read people trying it out and being confused as to what the game is vs what it is marketed as or was despite all the info available.

I signed up for NW early so it is free for me. Guess I am a bit more forgiving when I'm not out anything. If it isn't for me, oh well. Crowfall on the other hand is already quite different then what I expected when I gave them money years ago.

I played during betas and after launch and agree that some initial design choices and some still occurring weren't the best. Since then they've made a lot of changes and when I check in every once in a while, the game seems improved each time. They've enhanced performance quite a bit, the world has expanded, lots of new PVE and filler content, progression was worked on, PVP zones adjusted/wiped, etc. They didn't just launch and call it a day.

I'm not a huge fan of click to move games so it wasn't really for me either way.

I see Crowfall likely having to do similar be it pre or post launch. Unless the next updates is miles a head of where things are now, I don't see how this game design will sustain long term. It's one thing to be a niche and another to be unprofitable. Companies will do what is in their best interest. They've already done quite a few changes that deviated from the kickstarter concept likely to make it more accessible.

Why the hell are you scrubs talking about games other than Crowfall in this thread? GTFO.

/signed everyone

And you bringing so much decency is exactly about Crowfall - I sincerely hope not!

Will Dregs City Building requirements be toned down during testing to allow small guilds to participate?

Will Alliances and sub-guilding be active?

Is Shade warlock available yet?

All good questions, especially the one about Shade Warlocks.

To be honest there could be no Q&A this month and it wouldn't change much but let's not just complain and see the bright sight - maybe in Feb we'll see the new patch on servers.

It wasn't as much new stuff as I hoped for, but there was some. The changes to outposts, for example. The new minors for crafting. The verification that advantages and disadvantages are still in the plans.

This next campaign is only three weeks(a little less). I am wondering if based on what they said they need to do still(finish up -internal test, polish) then send to Test server-wondering if there may be two more campaigns before it hits Test, or Live?

That is my assumption, given the feature freeze being late summer.  February seems a stretch but maybe not impossible.

This Q/A was admittedly quite disappointing; very few Qs or As. I understand the need to keep some cards close to the chest, this product needs to be marketed for long term sustainability and that helps us all, but talking so much big picture while this close to a major update and with so many specific questions put up that should be safe territory for an audience that is already testing feels a bit like being fed the sales pitch all over again.

ACE, I believe in you and there is no need to convince me, but it sure would be groovy if you could help me manage my impatience to play your awesome game by giving us more info to chew on while we wait :)

What I gathered from the stream:

  • Marketing to the general public that is known to be unforgiving that doesn't care and actually laughs at updates of unfinished games is more valuable then rewarding loyal fans with news as they tread water for months. Ignoring that the general public wouldn't know or care if alpha details were dropped to fans weeks/months/years earlier.
  • Q&A doesn't mean what we think it does.
  • Update might not make it by end of Feb. If it does, will there be a massive news update overload or will there be multiple articles over weeks going over individual systems? Classes for example used to get a few each. The "need to finish milestone, then test/polish, then get to test" sounded like we have a ways to go still.
  • Caravans sound like escort quests/events found in other games. They spawn, we activate/control them, deliver to a destination. Was expecting more of horse+wagon that we can create and use freely like several other games.
  • JTC tweet about Crowfall being more strategic then EVE made news. Just have to scratch my head at that one. Not sure how you can even measure such a thing, but again, I'm sure the general nice public ate that hype up...
  • Dregs aka GvG is a big deal yet still lacking very basic (player perspective) guild systems that should be part of Dregs day 1. Things like this will be yet another item for the general public to laugh about and people to try once and uninstall. Beyond stronghold building and guilds owning them, wonder what else in this update is Dregs specific. Seems like it should of waited for a full Dregs update when GvG systems are ready for prime time. Assuming everything else announced will make it to Factions as well.
  • War Stories: Someone make one about waging "war" (loosest use of the term) without guild tools.

Wouldn't want to be in dev shoes, but hopefully all the new found millions will go to hiring more talent, tech, time machine, or whatever it is going to take. Good luck.

I seriously cannot see a 2020 launch now. 2021... sigh.

If the bulk of the work is done it could be possible, but as they won't show or tell us more it is just a guessing game. Sounded like the new funding should help.

New World is out in May.

Camelot Unchained will supposedly start allowing some streaming and loosening of NDA this month.

Ashes of Creation will start their Alpha One without a NDA plus will have their testing of large scale experiences in their BR sometime this year. They'll be showing Alpha One at GDC in march.

For someone like me, I'll be checking them all out and will be letting the best experience win me over.

With ACE claiming they'll be out before others and now going to be more strategic then EVE, hopefully they have a lot of good surprises for us.

Check out plan 8, its a strange blend of fps and mmo. Graphics are really as good as their trailer. Disclaimer: developer is pearlabyss :(

I'm interested in their upcoming titles but definitely hesitant due to their pay model and the heavy PVE grind of BDO. Really hoping Ashes of Creation ends up some what like BDO as I enjoyed it for what it was. Amazon is also making a LOTR MMO so next couple years will see some AAA and crowdfunded titles being released.

Ace already has your money, they don't really need to care about current backers but rather getting new backers. The same can be said for any other KS games that don't require sub.

Yes they need to bring in more customers and funding, but they have a decent amount that already don't care.

Maybe they should focus on getting the game done, keeping those actually invested and interesting coming back and focus on new customers when there is actually something worth paying for? Instead of doing the same crowdfunded dog and pony show that is not looked well upon by the gaming community.

They just got $12 million which is like 30% of their total funding. Don't see them in dire need of a few more people spending a couple bucks.

I'm fine with ACE not really caring about what I have to say as I'm no one. I can easily play their game forever without giving them another penny.

Still it reflects poorly on a company that does as you suggest and ignores loyal customers/fans just to get more people to do the same thing to in the hopes in keeping things moving, all the while bleeding players faster then they can get new ones. Only so many fall for this.
