Ranger Is A Range Dps, Or A Specialist ?

Recommended Posts

As the title says, it seams there is an error on the Ranger :

On the main page of the Archetypes, we can see the Ranger's icon has a Crosshair and a bow (wich is the DPS icon), and in the Ranger's page, he is tagged as a Specialist.

So which one is it ?

I guess this will make a big difference :)

wonder what a specialist means as apparently they're not "dps"?  assassins arent melee dps and rangers arent ranged dps.  hmm

I think they didn't already explained the difference.

So far there is nothing really explicit about this in the FAQ, except this :

FAQ Physics : " Of course the enemy may have specialists who dig through the terrain under those tanks to get to the targets."

This could be related to the Duelist, who has a shovel on his Specialist's Icon :)

I guess Specialist are more "tools Archetypes" (like more CC, or stealth, or hunter/PVP skills, or field mastery), than the "pure" DPS.

Yes, I'm guessing something somewhat similar to the Guild Wars 2 Engineer's abilities - Specialist, not Ranger.

rather leery of this specialist role.  seems not unlikely to be pigeonholed utility moniker.  have a sense they're not going to contribute to dropping any enemy group outside utilizing tactics afforded to own group by their specialized abilities.

ie gerbils tunneling to allow dps archetypes to get under walls (past choke points) for surprise attacks.  not much reason for them post wall breach and  wouldnt want many in the group.

I think we should focus on the narrative when talking about the "role" of a character.  The Ranger could easily have stealth, but I think he might be more of an upkeep character.  Survival and attrition will be their biggest strength.

When a World is ready to give up its final breath, bleed out the last of its warmth... when there is nothing left but the graves and the ice and the Hunger… we go back. We go back for those too stubborn, too dumb or too weak to leave.

A few of them, we save. Most we put to the sword, or feed to the fire. If that’s the only way to save them from the Hunger, we burn em and shed not one tear of regret.

They save the weakened (Crippled players), kill the Hunger haunted (Players converted to Ghouls), and burn the yet to be Hunger haunted (Corpses).

This concept art also displays something we can expect from these Rangers.  He's carrying our injured Druid here.  Rangers are Crowfalls' firefighters, they rescue allies.

Tracking players and monsters, then sneaking after them... That would be adorable.

Not so much if the Ranger isnt able to drop anything else and is essentially a bloodhound that leads others to targets.  Perhaps the specialists archetypes, while not having as much dps as their pure dps counter parts, will have greater health/mitigation/CC to be able to equal the effectiveness of the higher DPS counter parts.

I think it's the Ranger who is injured here, and the Druid helps him to walk :)

The Druid stands right and has enough energy to cast a spell.

When the Ranger doesn't have enough strength to hold his sword :(

If the Ranger is a Scout class, I guess he could have gone too far behind enemy lines, and ended up overwhelmed by the undead.

To the non-SB players, the profession sub-specialization is going to mean very different builds within 1 achetype. like someone already said,  I expect we'll see Rangers promoting to Scouts -- which is a player/monster tracking and stealth revealing prof. I also expect we'll see some of SB's siege disciplines as more profession-like classes within rangers: saboteurs and siege scouts.

I also expect you'll see a direct support option open to the ranger and the druid.
