Crowfall Founder's Update - December 2020 - J Todd Coleman

we’re already to the point where our servers can handle the load we feel like we’ll need for launch.

I don't understand this. What is the concurrent population and FPS goal for relatively large encounters? Doesn't seem like it is "already" there.

like the Castle, the tournament system, the fps improvements from our work with Unity and, of course, getting a chance to finally do a balance pass -- which I’ve been wanting to do for a long time!)

What about EKs, UI/UX improvements, NPE 3, more things to do besides chests, escort quests, and timed siege?

Balance is an on-going process which seems to have been happening quite a bit the last few months with classes/promos/talents receiving a lot of work. Curious what an actual "balance pass" will look like.

Tournament system of some sort sounds interesting, but the core game is still lacking long term appeal.

Lots of great progress this year but still some significant issues that aren't openingly being addressed or worked on.

@jtoddcoleman I reckon a founder update is not the place to discuss a (perceived) breacking-deal issue, so I figure you deliberately chose to not address feedback and discussion about Q&A of December which has been read and parsed.

However, I'm sorry to feel very distant from the excitement for features still to came.
Some of the backers who have been with us since the Hunger Dome days today are already talking about Crowfall as the game-that-was

grammar

Catelyn: War will make them old, as it did us. I pity them.
Mathis: Why? Look at them. They're young and strong, full of life and laughter. And lust, aye, more lust than they know what to do with. There will be many a bastard bred this night, I promise you. Why pity?
Catelyn: Because it will not last. Because they are the knights of summer, and winter is coming.

A Clash of Kings, Chapter 22, Catelyn II.

All the best.  You have some good things going for you.  But you should also add a few things to your list!

Make Territory control more fun

Add an auction house (This is the biggest thing for new and lazy players)

Add free building

During your balance pass make sure you balance the economy too!

I wish you well, because there's a certain other game just going in to Alpha that is your direct competition!

Any chance to get some informations like a timeline or a « to do list » before launch. Cause ok 2021 will see the launch but if you announce launch like campaigns... no need to tell more. So plz let community prepare this launch to not forget the game 2 month after

The wont do this since ACE has missed every timeline they have set over the past 6 years,

That’s why a « to do list » can be better. As we know factories are not for launch maybe some features had been reported after launch.

A time line at this point would probably end the game. My guess is some are waiting around be it playing or not because there is still the unknown what could happen. They've done some surprise changes, additions, removals in the past (recent trashing of passive training). I still have hope this isn't all the game is. If they gave an actual road map, I'd probably bail unless it was full of things this game needs to succeed.

I really hate to say it, but Crowfall will be dead on arrival. They haven't done much to really address player feedback and the game is going in a direction that most don't want it to go in. I personally didn't get any joy out of the game this month or last month. So I think I might just cut my losses and wait on Pantheon to come out. I might even be willing to go back to Albion Online. Crowfall is just falling apart at the seams and it's just really sad to watch. APE, you and I need to game together sometime, I'd really like to have a conversation with you over future MMO's. You seem like someone who I can relate/talk to without putting on airs.

Lord @Lirik will save this game; someone just need to pay him and it is worth the market money. @RhapsodyDownpour.. Are you aware they have not spend a single $ into marketing yet that I know about..  ..At least nothing official. Always some players concerned about something related to feedback it has been like that since the old grumpy dude from EvE online complained about to actually be "active" playing Crowfall. Not in his wildest dream did he think about something ackward like passive training would be in the trash can in Windows 10 in 2021. ^_^

What does that have to do with anything I just said? Marketing means nothing if you miss the window of opportunity for the game to launch. Crowfall is going up against some pretty well developed games right now. Pantheon is chugging along nicely, Ashes of Creation showed off their actual MMO gameplay demo last year, and it shocked everyone with how well it was doing. I don't know anything right now about Camelot Unchained. New World is "okay" but it's still in a better spot than CF is currently. People are also excited about Corepunk now too, there are MMO's on the horizon and each one is going to suck up a good number of people, Crowfall hasn't bothered to even advertise a tiny bit for their beta to bring in testers. The way Crowfall is now, people will come in, play it and then proceed to rip it apart all across the internet. It will get the Cyberpunk treatment. There's a bunch of glaring issues the game has, one of the biggest ones is keeping players around. If you can't even keep players engaged, forget about everything else. Player feedback is vital, without a community of players, your game will crash and burn. Want a fine example of this? Look at Maplestory 2, it already shut down within 5 years, that's sad for an MMO where their original game Maplestory has been out since 2003 and here it is 2021 and it's still going. But I digress, next time read what I have to say instead of bringing up arguments nobody even made. Thanks.

Brother, if you think some streamer will save crowfall if you pay them to lie.... They cant even get streamers to play the game at all. (good thing too since the negativity would be crushing)

Shadowbane was fun because character progression wasn't really a thing other than a pl group. and discipline drops

Guild progression through conquest, and city building, politics and mine fights were

Crafting wasn't really a thing because we had buildings for that

REMOVE the grinds and let us fight.

I find it telling that many people, myself included, think the game was more enjoyable 5 years ago when it was basically a battle royale.

@jtoddcoleman

the one thing that continues to give me hope for Crowfall's future is your nostalgia for SB.  When you explained your thought process on why you ended the passive skill system it showed me that if yu kept on that path we could have SB2.

Now if you can get us EK style building everywhere, and make Crowfall a real sandbox, this game will thrive.

They might not be putting up billboards and spending millions, but seems like they are marketing all the same.

They are paying a VP of Marketing. I see Ads on Youtube and my Google feed. They use social media to advertise their overuse of #s. They've done several promotions (buddy codes) to get people into the game, buying accounts, or whatever else. They've sent out 10s of thousands of beta invites from what I understand. They host streamers on Twitch and give them things to raffle off to viewers (collectors editions, game codes).

If someone is being paid to do any of this, they are spending $ on marketing. This is pretty much what game marketing is these days.
