  1. 1. Should Rangers have a specialization to tame animals?

Recommended Posts

Balancing pets is gonna be really tough. They have to be strong or worthwhile enough to have a reason to take them, but not so strong or useful that they will be a required disc for everyone to have. There has to be a reason why I would want X disc over the pet disc.

I could easily a game play scenario where everyone in the game has a pet and it just turns stupid.

Personally I hope they scrap the pets altogether.

Personally, I would never hope a dev team scraps anything until you know how they're planning on designing it.

I mean, why wouldn't you, instead, hope they do pets so well you no longer have that kind of a response to the notion of pets? :)

What good is hope if you only ever pair it with assumption?

Personally, I think scrapping anything that was brought in because a stretch goal was achieved would demonstrate that ACE is not trustworthy and turn a considerable amount more people against them than they would appease my leaving mg that content out. For instance Minotaurs aren't a big deal for me personally but since that stretch goal was achieved they are a big deal now because leaving them out would show they can't live up to their promises.

Completely scraping pets is off the table. They are in the game, its going to happen. No point in talking about it. What IS worth talking about is to what extent will pets be implemented. Will they be full on combat pets, or will they just simply pets that dont do anything, will be only be pack animals etc.

Side note: I like how the vote is split exactly 50/50. 66 votes in each at the time of this post.

Essentially this thread is pointless now seeing as pets are available, so arguing about whether or not you like this or not is a waste of time. So lets move on, shall we?

Yes animals might actually give the Ranger away. He is an assassin after all. Imagine trying to be in stealth mode with your cat, dog, horse, monkey sitting beside you licking themselves, or rustling through the leaves. The poor Lone Ranger would be easy pickings.

That might be your point of view, however with a stay command they can be used as a decent trap as well. Just because the animal is visible doesn't mean that you are. I used to do the same thing in WoW for CTF. My wolf remained visible on the main floor in front of the flag while i was shadowed on the top floor, granted this doesnt work anymore as pets can no longer be made aggressive which would unstealth would be rogues/druids.

IMO pets will either add something to the game play or be pointless to it. All that will be determined by implementation.

What if instead of a "pet" rangers had a serous of animal themed utility powers.

(Firefly swarm) act like a torch

(bat sentry) A bat stands guards and can detect stealth characters if that come with in range of the bat.

(Hungry boar) convenience a wild boar food is waiting on the other side of a trap so it goes charging threw setting off the trap.

Because the stereotype of the class said so. Pet is not a wow thing, the ranger class is known for the bow and pet. Don't take it away from them, just make sure to create a viable spec that not relies on them so the lone rangers can play too. But not having pets is IDIOTIC, period.

Stalker seems more like a ranged rogue/assassin, a scout.

Although I agree with pets being in the game this statement is not completely accurate as rangers in DAoC did not have pets; however scouts/druids and one other class i cant remember the name did.

Also following the material for a ranger they are known for a lot of different things and beast mastery only being one of them: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ranger_%28character_class%29

Think of rangers as being the base study as you branch out into further specialization one of those could be beast mastery, tracker, scout, etc. As with science, i could be considered a scientist by many but in my field of study i am a geologist, chemist, etc.

I'd like to see ranger pets as a "sometimes" thing.  You can tame them and they are disposable, or they appear as ability effects on cooldowns or the like but are not core, class-defining aspect of the archetype.

@Arcahn You're quite correct. The idea behind this thread however is to give Rangers some kind of specialisation dedicated to the pet mechanic.

I hope yall friendly fire your pets to death and they have permadeath so you have to buy a new one which cost mad gold.

I hope the pet is 1% away from dying and while you're running to heal it, it dies from poison inflection.

Only make it for a promotion class. I would rather not use a pet and depend on traps, stealth, utility but to have that option for people that like pet classes should be there.

I use to be a creature handler in swg pre cu

Honeslty the most fun i had was riding my rancor or sending my plainstalker on poor imperials. The hardest part about pets is balancing. If they can balance them there should not be a problem.

...Just because the animal is visible doesn't mean that you are. ....

One way to handle that would be like in Shadow bane. If you go invisible, the pet is automatically "dismissed".

I stick to my personal, and first opinion on this matter:

I feel like Crowfall needs to stay away from the typical MMO standard of the Ranger - it isn't that I don't want pets, on the contrary, I believe that pets should aid them in their primary role: scouting and reconnaissance.

Perhaps extended line of site? Perhaps increased stealth abilities (think a Falcon flying overhead giving feedback on monster/enemy movement, thus aiding the Ranger in his own movements)

I want Crowfall to stay away from having the Ranger ALWAYS use the pet as a way to get out of things. The pet should be ONE with the Ranger; you lose the pet, you yourself are extremely weakened.

I just don't want to see people sending their 'wolves' into battle for them. I want the Ranger and his/her pet to be part of the same orchestra of destruction, if they were to enter battle - or supporting each other outside of.
