Why Caravans Are Critical

There.  Must.  Be.  Caravans.

With caravans, everything clicks.  You have:

  • A strong sense of world - distance matters!
  • A decoupling of players and resource movement
  • The option of slower/faster movement speeds depending on the load
  • A visible attack/defense point  (pushcart games are tried and true)
  • Built in "escort quests"
  • More strategy, politics, and everything that this game stands for

I've seen some concerns that caravans are not a sexy enough stretch goal.  If that is the perception, caravans need better marketing.

Or boobs.. boobs always helps marketing.

just put naked ladies pulling the caravan, and they'll get millions ;)

On a serious note, I agree. Caravans will be very important in this type of game, and I dont see why people wont take it seriously.

Yes but Caravans also come with the stretch goal of player mounts. So I agree caravans are important I think having mounts is more so.

As much as I would like mounts (which we'll get anyway with the goal as you mentioned), I really wish that caravans were just straight being added.

In a  game about risk and reward they're basically the definition of it when they're moving a full load unmanned to a destination. Or just a solo player trying to get as much as they can. Which is amazing.

I'm not so concerned about mounts if the caravans can be caught on foot.

Most of the games I have been interested in over the years have hyped this mystical thing called a caravan but none of actually delivered on the promise. I am pretty sick of having my hopes and dreams crushed repeatedly. So yes, can we have caravans please?

Only if we reach the stretch goal :P

Caravans have the potential to add amazing gameplay elements.

The real consequence of losing resources if your caravan gets raided by competing guilds/groups will make them a strategic gem.

Do you go light, and fast, but with many carts, or do you send one heavily loaded caravan that is slow but well defended?

Travel by day in the open, or at night when vision might be impaired

Do you stick to roads, which may be faster, but longer in distance, or do you go as the crow flies, through less travelled territory...

etc etc

I pledged. I would pledge again if I could figure out how with the same account.

On the KS page, if you're logged in, there should be a "Manage" button next to where it shows your pledge amount. Click that. Proceed with entering more $$$   :D

Edit: Now, if you're wanting a 2nd reward, I dunno about that. You should be able to change your reward level, though.

I really hope we get there, because we need mounts and caravans in the game before the initial release. Mounts and caravans touch on so many systems, if they don't get them in early, test them, and balance things around them, then it could be a disaster / never make it in.

A few things that it touches...

Travel time/speed, so how large a world is / how far apart are things, this trickles into things like how long it takes to get back to a fight / siege / poi

Inventory space, how much inventory space would players have if mounts can hold stuff as well? How much space do they have? Are there tiers of mounts?

Taming? Gold sink? Discipline? Craftable?

Mounted combat?

I'm sure you could go on for a while.

They chose the goal order as the first stretch goal is more instrumental in beefing up their infrastructure and supporting the core module, the second goal while vital from an end-product standpoint, can be done without early in in the alpha/beta stage.

Surprised caravans weren't the first stretch goal.

Yeah, I was talking about a second pledged, I don't want to lose my early bird. But thanks anyway! :)

Critical is a strong word. I think this game would survive with or without caravans and mounts. Do they add more to the game? Absolutely, additional tactical encounters and player raiding options open up with caravans and mounts. They are not a base game requirement.
