Can Solo be a Thing?

Recommended Posts

You know if they would just come out and say what is NOT in the game, it would say a lot toward what IS in the game.

Patience.  They are doling out the clues one at a time.  Well, one or two maybe; we did get two yesterday.

Would like to see lots of stuff be able to be done solo, a good group finding/merging system. For example I'm playing alone but I want to play on a siege, by the time I go there it applies me in a friendly faction's (or whatever the system would be) group.

A solo option would be great but I would prefer a solo option in which you do not see other players and can pretend to be THE hero of the game. Maybe you can invite some few friends, too so that you can form a party and play together occassionally. But I don't want to see hundreds or thousands of other players hopping around before me.

Fingers crossed the Siege part of the game will be between guilds , faction pvp is lame .  Also it better be on the world map and not some instanced **** .... in which case anyone can go to the siege ( which is just how we like it  ) .

So there are always going to be those new players and people even who will come into this beta and want to play solo. Because lets be honest, it's the internet. We came on here to get AWAY from people or problems or whatever your thing is. But there is that section of Solo players. I mean I personally am in NZ timezone so unless they make AU, US, separate servers (I hope not) I'll most likely be playing during hours where only a few people will be on and most likely hoping off. Honestly that's fine by me because then I don't have to deal with getting asked to join a call/ts all the time. But I was wondering, do you think you could play this game and solo?

I hope so personally but my situation would be like this TBH: I'm apart of a clan but I only get on for scheduled raids/clan battles/etc and help there and do my part. Other then that I farm, grind, rank/rep up or whatever the system is but by myself and only with friends if they're on and join me in what I need done or join them if I need something from what they're doing. Do you think I could survive off that in a game like this? I just wanna hear opinions.

Yeah, I am more of a solo person that ranks up.

The less effort, the faster and more powerful you will be.

So as we already know the game is going to be all about crafting, pvp, gvg and stuff like that.

Do you think a lone wolf can survive in such a world? I myself am rarely a lone wolf in MMORPGs but it would still be good to know.

Could I gather all the materials needed for crafting on my own?

Could I ambush players in the woods without my name turning red and everyone knowing im killing ppl?

Could I jump in the middle of a boss fight and take everyone by surprise by killing them and taking the loot?

Could I appear in the middle of a gvg battle and get them heads rolling like a total badass?

Ofc all of this would be totaly in yolo mode since the whole server would be hunting you. But for the sake of roleplaying, why not be a badass? :D

Let me answer this way:

1. Could I gather all the materials needed for crafting on my own?

It depends on what you mean by "gather". If you are talking about a system like GW2's where a character runs around and farms a ore node, cuts down a tree and pulls up some onions, then the answer would be no IMHO based on what we have seen and from inference from that. From what has been shown so far it looks as if they will be using a modified Shadowbane resource system, where the players capture the "resourse node". Using the banner art resource as the example. that means a group of players captured a quarry to get stone from and they are escorting a cart load back. The question becomes is the quarry in a Window of Opportunity (WoO) system where only the owning guild can "mine" the node until the next window? or is it that you only own it while you are physically there? If the former it would be rare for a "lone wolf" not to get chased out during the WoO. If it is the latter system you might be able to ninja some resources but I wouldn't expect it to be a lot, especially if it is a highly desirable resource. Now what we do know is that a cart is being escorted which begs the question of "What happens if I kill the guards?" Hopefully it will be similar to the GW2 WvW Yak model where you get some of the supply from killing the Yak, so kill the guards and be able to loot the cart.

2. Could I ambush players in the woods without my name turning red and everyone knowing im killing ppl?

This is completely unknown at this time and we really can't infer anything from the 2 top Devs past since they come from different PvP systems. J. Todd Coleman made Shadowbane where there was ffa PvP and there was none of the "Red Name" system. What Shadowbane had was a PvP channel that announced who got kill by who and the death was announced in the victims guild channel. Gordon on the other hand comes from UO which had the Red/Gray/Blue name system.

3. Could I jump in the middle of a boss fight and take everyone by surprise by killing them and taking the loot?

Right now we don't know what type of progression system they are going to use nor how they will implement it but going from the past and that the character creation screen looks very similar to SB IMHO there will be character levels and thus leveling. Now how they go about leveling is unknown but I doubt you are going to see "Boss" mobs like in WoW and I highly doubt there will be raids. The closest thing I could see is something Shadowbane had which is World Bosses and anyone could attack you when you tried to kill it.

4. Could I appear in the middle of a gvg battle and get them heads rolling like a total badass?

To this I can say with 99% confidence people will be able to do. I do not see them making a PvP focused game that is not open world pvp and in an open world pvp anyone could jump in. That means you come across a 5 v 5 going on you could pick your spot and kill some peeps ala like it was in Shadowbane.

So the overall answer is probably you can Lone Wolf it but it wouldn't be easy

reasonable Questions...

but the only honest Answer, imo, is ..."we don't know"

that being said...indications are that it'll be much like SB in that you can theoretically run totally solo....but it will be epically difficult...

could just be me

i'm not saying this game CAN'T be played as a "lone wolf" but this is a quote directly off the beta registration confirmation email...

PS. One final note: this is a game for teams. Now that you're on the beta
list, you might want to invite a few friends. You're going to need them.

I kinda like the idea of it being a choose your play style game. I'd like it if we are allowed to play in the large groups or just alone. Could make for some fun in game economics and surprises. A lone assassin in the northern region who kills anyone regardless of faction. The ability to have a single miner who goes out on his own collecting resources, crafting them into weapons and armor and selling it in private shops (player driven economy). It would add a fun new level of immersion since, let's face it, in Game of Thrones, not everyone is going to be a victorious king leading hundreds of men to control the world, there are a lot of merchants and farmers just trying to survive in the world.

and in your example..every one of them lived on land ruled by some Lord...who collected taxes and protected the area with his army...

so yes, you can go out on your own and do things...but you will need to be part of a larger political group....at least that's how it's looking to me so far...

your mileage may vary

While I hope the game concentrates heavily on group play, I'd like to see the game have some content for solo people.  I wouldn't mind there being something for those of us that need alone time from time to time to do.  That being said, it shouldn't be easy.   I think good situational awareness is a must.

They have already said there will be content for solo gamers, aka Lone Wolves. Pretty much everything should be open for it. They specifically said that not once during the dev process that they are intentionally crossing out Lone Wolf/Solo Play.

It will just probably be a bit less fun than usual, less than 30 days to find out though.
