I've been trying to find information on the specialist archetype, I haven't able to find anything. However I did think of something, both specialists have high agility, because of this and the name I think specialists will be encouraged to take on more disadvantage runes so they can put their points onto anything. I believe that they will be the most diverse characters who will require more thought to be put into creating them. That's the reason the devs stated that the specialists would be for more advanced players.

Please tell me your thoughts and link any information that may contradict what I have said, thanks!

my guess is they'll have access to abilities that allow for specialized roles.  ie the rat can tunnel under walls, amazon fairy flies, etc..

more advanced unfortunately sometimes means typically at a disadvantage outside their niche role.  so 2nd rate dps, durability, CC, escapes, etc..

ye i don't mind that at all,i don't like playing the class that obviously deals the most damage,i would rather play a class that isn't predestined to deal that much damage, but turn it into a damage beast with effort and skill^^

The specialist will probably be the worst in most 1on1 pvp encounters but might do really well when used in combination with other archetypes. I have a feeling that manipulating the environment to their advantage will be where they excel, like a tunneling discipline.

effort and skill is only going to carry one so far if the archetype doesnt have the toolset.

I like to think of them like heroes of the storm specialist guys.

They probably do something thats generally not easy to define as a specific thing, and that doesn't mean inherently that they're going to be weaker...some may be, utility focused or hybrids and that may be the case, but its not like in stone or anything.

if so their popularity is likely to be quite low as most are unlikely to find the role all that fun.

ye i don't claim that my guinecean will win 1on1 vs the legionnaire, but i doubt 1on1 will be very important in this game,if i am not a person seeking 1on1 actively.

most fighting will probably be done in groups, and since characters can block each other and the environment play a role,my pistol wielding duelist won't have to face such a frightening creature as the centaur head on^^

Really I wouldn't be too surprised if specialist was just a term to refer to them doing something that doesn't fit a traditional role in an MMO (or at least doesn't fit into the basic niches). Just guessing for the three that we've seen so far, the duelist is probably a 1v1 specialist, the stalker a set up character and the assassin an ambusher. I hope that the specialists don't fit into similar roles as each other, it would be quite interesting if they all had their own you know... Specialties.

DocScratch is correct kind of.

The specialists have a certain skill set that doesnt translate over. Digging, scouting, elking and stealthing.

point is groups with 'specialists' may be under-powered to groups featuring less of them.  small group with a rat tunnels into keep and a similar sized defense group is there with only tanks, dps, and support as they're not carrying any niche 2nd tier (vs pvp focused toons) specialist.

this is all wild speculation and guessing on our part we could be completely off on what any of these general 'roles' mean as they come to game play.
