Server Location....

Recommended Posts

There are a lot of guilds out there with people located all over the world and while I know it isn't practical to ask for server locations that are perfect for all circumstances I think it would be really great if at least EU and NA had at least some location where both could play with fairly reasonable ping.

I'm wondering if those at ACE have any thoughts about where they plan to have their servers located.

I don't know a lot about cloud-based server technology and how that all works but I'd imagine that somewhere along that line there has to be a physical server or servers involved in making the cloud what it is and data must travel through some centralized point.

I'm pretty sure the servers currently planned with in within the United States. Those are priority for now till they get more funding for an EU server, which is one of the stretch goals seen on the payment page. http://crowfall.com/#/payment

Yea that talks about a beta server, I am more interested in their vision for EU and NA crossplay which would probably benefit most from an east coast USA location.

I hope the devs are not going to interpret the the relatively minor website contributions as lacking EU interest, I don't know where the bs about EU not being able to back KS comes from but let me tell you that VIsa and Mastercard standard cards are commonplace, in fact at least 9 out of 10 cards issued in Europe are that and therefore compatible with KS. A significant part of current KS funding is from the EU, not having EU beta servers is a horrible thought. For example, I'm from the EU and have backed on KS, and therefore heavily invested in making EU servers happen but I'm not going to transfer my pledge simply because I like to see the numbers go up. Judging interest from Europe based on the website funding counter alone would be both ignorant and negligent.

Everyone always wants the server to be close to them in order to minimize lag for themselves and their region.  The problem is that with this some benefit while others suffer.  Even if you have separate servers for NA East, NA West, EU, RU, CN, and others you still end up with one region or another being at a disadvantage.  Plus the costs of having and maintaining multiple server locations make a game more likely to be a financial failure.

My suggestion therefore is to find a location that is as equally REMOTE from all major locations as possible.  If we all have a moderate ping then physical location no longer provides an advantage in game.  Playing with a 200 - 300 ping isn't bad if everyone has it the same.

Probably won't happen, but it'd be interesting to see.

I don't understand it either. I'm from Hungary and could pledge on the kickstarter site without any problems. On the other hand, my friend couldn't pledge on the payment site because it said they don't accept money from Hungary - although this has been fixed by now it seems, it was a bit ironic. I would make a survey how many europeans are among the kickstarter backers.

I can't actually tell if you're serious or not.

At any rate, as long as you don't live in a third world country you should be fine with latency.

From Australia, I've connected to US and EU servers and had sub-100 ping. They should probably focus on having servers in those areas to start and move more into SEA or Russian areas if things pick up well.

I agree, servers in SEAttle pronto! Also make a movie about it!

Servers in Seattle, one player's quest for in-game latency supremacy leads him down the surprising path of love.

Maybe ACE is afraid that Hungary is the source of the Hunger?

I think the K-Mart of MMO's already exists!  And it ain't us!   :)

They've already said they want EU and NA players to be able to play together.

Honestly, anything above 100 ping is unbearable if you actually want to play the game properly. For euro's I'd assume France or Germany is pretty central.

What's a 1000 minus 7?

Happy April 1st! Ya got me!

That being said, it's 2015, I don't really expect to have more than 50 ping playing online games anymore.

I hope they only have servers in Antarctica, really helps save on cooling costs.

Finally!  A server near me!  :D

US West servers give me around 100-300ms ping times, which is perfectly playable as a raid tank with no issues.  When those times are all you know, you do get used to having to be a little prescient about skill usage and movement.  I raided with a guild on an Australian server once, and it felt like the abilities were triggering before I was hitting the buttons XD

If you're having EU and NA playing together, either your server is going to sit in the middle of the Atlantic (I don't think they've built the Atlantic Accelerator yet) or one of the two groups is going to have a higher ping than the other...  And most likely BOTH groups will be complaining about the lag no matter where you put the damned thing, so Australia is obviously the best choice all around.

For NA players, Chicago is the closest distance for most players (and the most populated parts of the country). Games I've played with Chicago servers have been far better than other games that only have one NA server. A lot of servers are in Texas which is actually quite far for most people in the northern parts of the country. Then just add another server in Europe somewhere for those players. Yes I know some Europeans will be in NA guild and vice versa, but those will be the minority and you need to do what's best for the majority. Trying to lower ping for most players is the best way to go.

3 locations to chose from for EU:

- Frankfurt, Germany

- Amsterdam, Netherlands

- London, England
