Multi-Boxing: Haters Gonna Hate - Why Is This Debatable? Should It Be Allowed?

Recommended Posts

I'm imagining people will box here the same way they do in Darkfall. Combat-Multiboxing is damn near impossible in games which require any degree of aiming. Therefore people will play a single character and have multibox gatherers and crafters if those systems are simple enough to require minimal user input.

The only reason this should be of any concern is if there are campaigns that only allow you one character. Multiboxers use multiple accounts and can bypass this restriction. So I could say, play a Centuar in the early stages while my champion hangs around gathering and crafting until we need caravan escorts. In late game I can retire my Centuar and take my Champion to all the massive sieges.

You can't stop people from doing that with threat of punishment though because what's the difference between a multi boxer and several siblings playing from the same home, or even different IPs from around the world if you have the right software?

As far as the information they send to the server, there is no difference.

You want to stop multiboxing, then give people reasons not to. Use carrots to entice people to put all their characters on one account, and minimize the systems that can effectively be multiboxed.

I'm not seeing combat multiboxing being a big issue. Its not really the sort of game where that is easy to set up.

Multiboxing can't be stopped anyway. You can't just ban ip's in case you take out a legit household, or worse an entire college campus. That'd go down like a sack of bricks.

The more likely issue is people using multiple accounts to effectively teleport between their guild's POIs. Who has a plan for stopping that?

I wonder how friendly fire will work out in the dregs, Multi-boxing might not end up being viable down there.

Also we do not yet know how players will be distributed between factions in God's Reach or the Infected, might not be very effective there either, but I don't care as much about these as I do about the Dregs.

Well they don't have to ban IPs, they can ban accounts. And if you keep buying more accounts that creates a lot of revenue for them. The issue is it's hard to tell the difference between one person using multiple accounts and multiple people with multiple accounts that live together.

Difficult, and about as useful of a pursuit as the war on drugs.

Immersion is for people with horrible lives.

I would argue your life quality is more relative to your gaming time than your gaming style

I've found a few hours of immersion every now and then, preferably with friends, combines very well with a productive and socially functional lifestyle. I imagine non-immerse hardcore pvping 10 hours a day comes with more of a backlash.

And about multi-boxing. I really hope it will be ineffective.

If they have collision it will be harder. I remember seeing a guy in WOW who had 9 shammys all stacked on top of one another and near equally timed!

One combat character being actively played and one crafter putting a new loaf of bread in the oven every few minutes is a reasonable and achievable degree of multitasking.

You are correct, in that players can't "stack" in CF as Ace has mentioned all along that there will be player collision.  You can't move or attack through other players (well, unless TK rules are in place then you can kill your friend in front first).

IMO Crowfall would be the worst game to try to multibox. And probably not a good investment thinking that you can. Maybe you are trying to rule the economy with mass harvesting and all crafting disciplines. Will be interesting to see how this pans out.

It's not a tab target game. Active block/aim combined with friendly fire will probably make multi-boxing extremely inefficient to say the least. No worries here. Box away!

Exactly!!  just more corpses to loot

Based on the proposed action combat, the full collision and physics, and the friendly fire aspects - I suppose if you are 'boxing ranged DPS, and if you get the drop on a solo player, you could probably instagib them with focus fire.

So I suppose if you edit out all the time you are having to reset your personal zerg from when you ganked that one guy and the other four with him owned you because the element of surprise was gone and you couldn't react to the combat from four directions at once, you might be able to assemble a few big-number kill-shot montages.

The short attention spanned folks these day will probably love those - millions of hits on youtube no doubt.

I somehow doubt that multiboxing is going to be of too much use in a twitch-based action combat game.

Based on what they've said about combat so far, if your only desire is to go farm for something then yea you can do it. But PvPing or something that really involves more thought, no not really. I don't think it should be allowed, though.

ITT: People who want to repeat the phrase "Multi-boxing won't really work in a challenging PvP combat game."

The real interesting question is whether the restrictions in place will prevent the awesome double-life scenarios in Eve where players pretend to be someone else through a different account, and infiltrate enemy organizations.  That is a cool feature, and I think is something that has to be weighed against the things like 1 EK per account, 1 character per campaign, etc.

Nothing is preventing any player from owning multiple accounts and infiltrating guilds.  This is player behavior that is a social feature beyond the scope of any game code.

It happens more times than most will realize.  But, they're not all that hard to sniff out though.

Metagaming is real.  EVE Online has proven time and again that actions external to the game can have a ripple effect in game.

If you've never heard theMittani talk about Russians saying they will go to someone's house and cut the power during a fleet battle, you really need to...

Reason for this is that people like to watch stuff that they may found challenging and different.. and for many multi-boxing is just that.

Wait a second, running 10 guys at once focusing one guy is considered "challenging"?

I hate to break this to you; this is not considered, in any universe, challenging or skillful.

This'll be fun to watch from afar... then swoop in and be the last one remaining in a field of loot.
