In Game Recording Ala Shadowbane Would Be Cool!

Recommended Posts

A really cool thing in SB wasn't just your ability to record conflicts... but when you played them back (via the client) you could walk around the area and see what other people were doing.  So it was a great postmortem on what the heck went wrong as you run around looking at different parts of the siege. Or also play back what happened when you were ganked etc. It would also make for a fun fan board of posted videos in this fashion I think.

Cool idea or would people not use it? Or is it just not possible with today's gaming?

I can't say I used this a single time in SB, but when I was breaking into diamond in SC2 I'd review every match I played.

At the same time, I wish I still had recordings of some major battles we had in SB.... thing is, even if I had in-game recordings it would be useless unless I could play it in VLC Player or such.

I don't think we need to question if it's possible or not, but what we really need to find out is if it would be beneficial and wouldn't take to much developing time. To be honest though, I think the devs should only focus on the core game and the stretch goals instead of adding on tons of features.

It might be a nice feature later on, but right now I don't really think it would be needed for the release.

Would be interesting. Never knew a game had that outside of RTS.

Question would be: what would be recorded?  Would all movements of every player, ever projectile, etc be recorded (could be in text format) or would certain things be recorded.

Hands down the most underrated part of SB, and one I used quite extensively. I'd love to see this in Crowfall.

For those who didn't play SB, the recorder captured every piece of data transmitted to your client from the time you turned it on until you stopped the recording. When you used the playback feature, it used the data log to recreate the battle in full. There were some issues with the client degrading if you left it on too long - say, 40 minutes during a large siege - but you could stop it and start a new recording almost instantly and clear it up.

As mentioned above, you could record a fight and move around to see other things you may have missed the first time around.

Protip for those still playing one of the SB emulators - while watching a recording, take a 2-3 second recording during a large fight. When you playback your recording of the recording, at the end of the clip you can move around the full breadth of the battlefield. It's great for after action, or you know, pointing out a zerg as a zerg. Not that I've ever spent time counting all of the knuckleheads chest-thumping about their Calimath skills. (You can also take screenshots from this as well.)

Yes that was a great feature of Shadowbane, the record itself was very little in size and recorded every data that your client was getting from the server.

For the guild and group leader its was a fantastic to review the big battle, and getting better at strategy.

For everyone a way to make fun video after the fight and so not ahve to worry runing heavy ressource video capture soft during the action.

Personaly i used it many time, specialy after getting WTF_POWNED its was a great way to learn, also a perfect tool to make the difference from the guys who killed you because he/they was (alot) better than you, or because he used a bug or you was just laging the hell out  ( they was some well know exploitable bug, like hide under building or inside rock using AE spell but also sometime client/server lag was making you die from invisible player).

The record was allowing to you to check quietly from what you die and if its was an exploit you could repport him with a verifiable proof allowing the GM to act switfly.

Firefall does that right now. It's truly awesome. It allows you to get the perfect screenshot, review a fight, follow other players around, etc... The data file it creates in really tiny, like 50k for a minute or so recording. It uses the game EXE to "play" the recording. I would LOVE this to be in Crowfall. It would also help with reporting players for bad behavior, since we could easily send or upload this small file for the support team to review.

This should be in the suggestion section so we can give it 5 stars  ;) .

Embeded video capturing could be valuable for a variety of uses. Besides capturing abusive behavior(I doubt it would happen enough to add just for this), it could be a promotional tool to get more videos out on the internets to bring in more new players. Planetside2 has youtube integration, while I don't know if youtubers use it there are a massive amount of videos to bring in freshmeat.

nah you're missunderstanding something :)

integrated video capture like planetside 2 for example, is pretty bad imo.

It usually results in a bigger performance hit than the commonly used recording software, all the while producing footage with a worse quality.

I personally think it's an absolute waste of a feature that just caters to dumb dumbs, whose videos noone watches anyways ;)

It also rarely features the needed customization, especially in the audio department, that the actual content producers look for.

What's being suggested here is a replay function like seen in games like starcraft. It's a small, cpl of kb big file, that can be opened in the actual game client and replays all the action. It lets you disable the UI, tweak the sound volume and so on. You can retroactively take screenshots and whatnot as well.

The recording feature was awesome. Both for fan content (WATCH THIS - OCC (Havamal) +Hyshen (HOA) vs. SD, early corruption) and for internal use (what worked, what didnt, etc.) Would love to see this in game.

I hate that video :(

:)

in fairness, in that 34 second furies went from being highly regarded as the most gimp class in the game, to OMGWTF OVERPOWERED NERF WTF .

i can only imagine what the voice comm was like...mild bemusement at 'rofl 2 groups of furies in the air, lol gimp...wait for the wearbear rush'  to the '...wtf just happened...how did we all just die like that...'

combined arms in a video game...find, fix, close and destroy (with close combat and maneuver)...unless you don't need to and they just stand there in the artillery killzone hehe.

This kind of thing might be helpful in resolving report worth conflicts as well.

Excellent for testing purposes too. Someone should give a dev a shout.

I'd rather this than VR support...

no doubt. shipping with a bad ass capture/edit suite would be awesome. in sb...someone correct me if i'm wrong...but i believe you had the recording, then you had to frap the recording, then you had to do you editing/dubbing etc. would be awesome (AND GREAT FOR MARKETING) if players could generate high quality vids with the existing software.

screw vr :P

You got it dubs. The part that really sucked was having to watch the recording through FRAPS multiple times if you goofed up the angle.

Still, just having the ability to get the recordings at all was pretty sweet.
