Crowfall: Not A Pvp Mmo

Recommended Posts

Bruh... from the few gameplay videos we've seen and even one of the developers saying "Monsters are just there as an extra threat" i think it's safe to say the game is mainly PvP oriented, seeing as how you can go anywhere monsters will probably be really easy to dodge and will only have crafting materials you will need for rare recipies. Read the news mate.

Lol man there are some next level gonzos in this thread. It's like they've evolved from just proclaiming straight PVE to subtle subversion. Next we'll have them transcend into becoming ACE team members and pushing their ideals. I hope they offer insurance, you'll be visiting my sig often.

Meh, I'm finishing up my graduate school here so it's a good break tbh. The games are just icing on the cake.

Maybe I wasn't clear, but my point was that terms like PVP and PVE do not mean one specific thing.

That is why I was suggesting (without hope) that we should see different terminology used as the old/current system is pretty crappy.

Is CF a "PVE" game when using the WoW themepark definition? Of course not.

But you can not deny that Players will be playing against the Environment. As the Seasons change, the experience beyond direct player interaction will become more difficult. Be it The Hunger, monsters, warmth, natural disasters or whatever else they have in store. Simply going from Point A to Point B could be hard, with or without other players popping out and stabbing us in the face. To me this is PVE, regardless if the overall game is focused on PVP.

I didn't say that there would be "no risk." This is the problem. I mention PVE and you jump to "no risk." Where in reality, "PVE" in CF will be risky. Participating in the economy will be risky. Same goes for the political side.

Terms with too much baggage need to be replaced with something current and meaningful that applies to the actual product and design.

If not, it turns into subjective definitions and semantics. Is there some mathematical equation to figure out the PVE content threshold before a PVP game turns PVE? This sounds silly, but basically is what I'm seeing people talk about. If Stabby time > 50% = PVP?

Games should just be games, but we as humans must slap labels, tags, definitions, and put them in boxes to make us feel good.

If we are going to bother defining and debating on what something is or isn't, we should at least have terms that make sense and can be agreed upon on some level by the majority.

At the end of the day, I see CF as a PVP game at its basic form. To me this is a very shallow way to look at it as it has the potential for a lot of depth and complexity that isn't easily summed up with something as vague as PVP.

I can just as easily call WoW a PVP game depending on where someone spends their time. I'd argue that WoW =/= CF, but maybe I'm wrong?

Theres already too many terms for both, that is what has been destroying what i know of as PVP. To me PVP is just two people killing each other off, competing over resources etc... there should be only 2 terms PVP and PVE (my own outlook on it...PVE player versus Environment (game mechanics or a single player game), with a certain story you have to follow to complete it.

PVP - player versus player i see you i dont like you for whatever reason i kill you and take your stuff :) and i can still RP a white knight or a dark knight depending on how i feel, and no certain story to follow to enjoy a game, PVP in my opinion is good for getting people together from all sides of gaming to accomplish one goal, domination. The good thing about that that keeps the gamer going in place of a story, is there will always be another group of people that dont agree with you so they will try to dominate your plans! PVP how sweet it is (and no end game, just a constant one!)

What other terms are there that have been "destroying" what you consider PVP?

If you have to fight off "zombies" in Crowfall, are you then a PVE player? A PVPer participating in PVE?

Or is PVP such an all encompassing term that it is everything wrapped into one?

Such that GW2, Crowfall, Counterstrike can all be summed up with calling them PVP games?

Or do they have PVP + XYZ which depending on the extent of XYZ, might make them completely different from one another and PVP is just one aspect of a much larger and complex design?

Honestly I'm just throwing my opinion out there of how I think modern games really don't use these terms well anymore, I'm not disagreeing that Crowfall is a PVP game.

Clearly I'm off on my own little world in this and most prefer PVP/PVE and arguing over semantics and what not, but it seems like such a fruitless discussion.

Guess I'll just consider all game to be PVP+ wher I fill in the blanks to what the + means, it might calm the voices

Many are focused solely on the PvP aspect of Crowfall which is kind of...oh I don't know maybe a state of delusion. As if that is all that is in CF. Crowfall isn't a strictly PvP game, it just adds depth. The devs have said many times "players are the most dangerous part of the game" but they aren't the only danger in the game. That means there aren't going to be those critical world bosses or giant mobs or anything else; no players are the most dangerous thing in Crowfall. So you always need to be on guard because of that X Factor, that extra element.

I think you have it a little backwards. It's not the PvP that's there to add depth, it's the other way around.

TJC said in thread "Will There Be Any Pve Campaigns?" (ref. post#104845)

We have PvE in the game, yes, but it bears repeating: the monsters exist to raise the general threat level of the universe, and to occasionally drop rare reagants.

If you want to avoid PvP completely, you can do that by stay in the Eternal Kingdoms -- but if you do, you'll need to have a a plan to work with the players who are willing and able to win in the Campaign Worlds, because you're going to need them to provide you with resources and materials to build and craft.

There are a LOT of games where PvE is the driving force, and PvP is a secondary mechanic. We're making a game where PvP is the driving force, and the PvE is secondary.

That's not to say that you can't be a full-time professional crafter or run a mercantile empire -- you can! -- but you can't do it in a vacuum.
