This is not custard important at all, only the gonzos care about poorly made socks like this.

Seriously STOP WITH THAT ''GONZOS'' AND ''gonzoS'' (not you specifically), I have no idea where it originates from or why, but its annoying to see it everywhere to belittle other players. (Heck I don't even know what qualities someone has to have for you guys to call him that)

Bottom line, too many development dollars for not enough return on investment. Delivery on the over arching themes of the core design cincepts is much more important than creating a bunch of options that may or may not really get used.

As an old SB player that actually made Minotaurs because I wanted to play them, including a variant that was an archer (gasp!) and actually made it work, I'll take whatever Crowfall decides to give us to play with, make it work again, while enjoying the challenge along the way.  

 

Ultimately, I'm most concerned with play balance because Crowfall is a PVP MMO.  If fewer class + race options make this easier to attain, that's the right path.

2. The cost to add new archetypes is both linear and predictable. That means we can grow the game without the cost scaling out of control. Given the time and money, we can add dozens of new archteypes.

 

To what extent will this dilute the archetype uniqueness? The example was a very cool description...but it was based on lore not actual game mechanics. Plus each archetype can be further specialised with promotions.

 

Currently CF has 4 roles and each one has 2-3 ways they are handled. From the quote above we can see 4-6 variants of each.

 

It feels to me that this design view is in favor of having players with lots of varying characters to use in a campaign all at once instead of developing a single one and a few alts.

 

Am I close?

 

Because if that's the case can we keep our name no matter that archetype we are currently playing just like in games where there character story is less relevant?

 

I'm not Ubernaught the Heavy or Flash1337 the Scout. I'm just me and right now my team needs more engineers so I'll just switch to that and help out.

Guys, I totally get where you are coming from.  

 

But you need to understand: this is a multi-million dollar request.    Let me build a simple example, to explain why:

 

X is your number of races.

Y is your number of classes.

Z if your number of unique armor sets (or equipment pieces, really) per race/class.

 

So, if I have 5 races, 5 classes, 2 genders and 5 armor sets per, that's 5 (races) * 5 (classes) * 2 (genders) * 5 (sets) = 250 unique "looks".  if an armor set has 4 visible slots (gloves, boots, torso, helm), that's * 4 (items), so we're talking about 1000 unique art assets.

 

...and this is just the equipment pieces.  For simplicity, I'm not covering concept, animation, particles, etc.

 

If you lock race and class, and then you cut that number down to 5 (archetypes) * (2 genders) * 5 (sets) = 20 unique "looks", and with 4 visible slots thats 80 unique art assets.

 

 

 

Uhmmm just a biology teacher here but 5*2*5=50 (not 20) * 4 is 200..... <sneaks back into shadows>

oh, did I screw up the math?  looks like I did 5*2*2 instead of 5*2*5?

 

regardless, same conclusion.  and the difference becomes even more dramatic, as you increase the number of races & classes.

I think the same set of interesting results could be possible depending on the overall effect on the Archetypes of various Disciplines, just without Animation overhead.  That would depend on the breadth, depth, and availability of the disciplines though.
