Stretch Goals

Recommended Posts

I joined the PVP centric game Star Citizen early on. In fact it was thru the statement of Chris Roberts (founder of Star Citizen) that I came to CROWFALL and then join the backer program with a Bronze Package. However, when looking thru the stretch goals I wondered if the DEVs might consider using the Stretch Goal Gifts that brought so much more money to Star Citizen in the earlier, startup phase of the game. These were simple things to use in game, digital as it were, to encourage additional backers. Nothing game breaking and often only cosmetic. Used as a simple incentive to invest, or invest more in CROWFALL.

I have already invested in CROWFALL so I don't need more incentive to join. However, I never look a gift horse in the mouth, so if an item or so of interest (use imagination) were to be offered at certain stretch goals I might give second looks at upgrading or purchasing more 'stuff'. Just a minor suggestion.

i thought that was a joke about the worst kind of player????

From Todd:

"The Guinecean Slayer was well-received on Tuesday -- a little TOO well-received for an April Fool's Day joke, actually. He turned out a lot more popular than we expected! (and who knows, perhaps he'll become a future stretch goal?)"

also star citizen is suffering from a horrible case of feature bloat, and we'd all prefer that crowfall devs stay focused

They can bloat their way to navel combat though, I think we would all be into that. :)

With its +$82M crowdfunding campaign, Star Citizen could be a good example to follow. As you mention, the stretch goals they put must be encouraging new backers to pledge and current backers to raise their pledge.

A couple of their SG I find interesting and that could possibly be adapted to Crowfall :

  • A new star system will be added to the game for every $100,000 pledged, with descriptions posted to the Comm-Link. $3.1M: Odin System $3.2M: Tyrol System $3.3M: Kellog System $3.4M: Goss System $3.5M: Orion System ...
  • All backers who pledge before June 28, 2013 will receive a Roberts Space Industries Class II space suit in their hangar.
  • Arena mode: The next generation of Wing Commander’s TrainSim allows pilots to test out their combat skills against friends or strangers in a simulation. Gain valuable combat experience without the downside of losing your ship in the game universe! Place bets on competitions across the galaxy.
  • Procedural Generation R&D Team – This stretch goal will allocate funding for Cloud Imperium to develop procedural generation technology for future iterations of Star Citizen. Advanced procedural generation will be necessary for creating entire planets worth of exploration and development content. A special strike team of procedural generation-oriented developers will be assembled to make this technology a reality.
  • Stellar Cartography – Walk among the distant horizons you’ve charted in Star Citizen’s dedicated “map room” featuring a 3D holographic representation of the known universe. Your map room will start with a basic guide to the United Empire of Earth, and will expand into something that is unique to you as you explore uncharted worlds and discover new secrets. ...
  • More Detailed AI Activities – we’ll add ten distinct types of AI character roles on planetside environments! At $54 million, this includes Bartender, Doctor, Entertainer, Nurse, Sanitation Worker, Security Guard, Shopper, Tourist, Vagrant and Vandal. ...

The difference is that the scope of the game they're attempting to develop requires a lot more money just to get to a functional point (and they're still a long way off) than crowfall's much more focused design. Stretch goals like "localization" and "female character model" are value adds that aren't huge R&D sinks, massive new systems, or otherwise things that add feature creep.

Star Citizen is a game that frankly doesn't care if it ever hits release in a timely manner because it's not being developed with the intent of hitting release and selling itself to become financially solvent. It's already financially solvent enough to be in development for five more years if all income stopped today.

Crowfall on the other hand is actually prioritizing releasing a finished game for which actual consumers are willing to pay and making their money from that product more than the well intentioned and fickle contributions of early adopters.

Despite having made more money, I think the crowfall approach to crowdfunding is the more sensible one. I really don't think anyone should look at the freak accident that is Star Citizen as a model of how to run crowdfunding and more than people should look at the freak accident that is WoW as a model of how to design an MMO. It's an outlier that is very unlikely to be replicated.

Tha fact is that SC give only the rewards if u backed before they achive the goal. So people try to pay as soon as possible yo get all the rewards.

Maybe this could be adapted in Crowfall in the future.

I really don't want Crowfall emulating SC in any way, mainly because I would like to see the game come out within the next 5 years.

Comparing SC to Crowfall is silly.

For 1. A game like CF doesnt need 85 million.

So the stretchgoals and such are way different.

That said, i wouldnt mind if CF adapted the Module release thing. I would love to play around with my Castle and lands a bit.
