<The Gaean Remnant> RP Guild

Recommended Posts

This guild is now inactive - we reached a point where all members had left for greener pastures, and I am considering transferring my ownership to Chinese servers (which would have much better ping). I'll leave this here for archival purposes only.

Who are you?

The Gaean Remnant is a newly forming group of dedicated roleplayers that specializes in RP-PVP. We maintain Gaea's Haven, a refugee camp dedicated to the dead goddess Gaea that is open to any RPers, and a military in the form of the Remnant Strike Force that answers to the democratic government of Gaea's Haven.

What makes you different from other RP or PVP guilds?

Two things, primarily:

1) All players are roleplayers. Everyone has a backstory, and we provide the backdrop and community for you to advance your own narratives..

2) IC guild leadership is determined by the players, all of which is temporary. IC leadership structures are completely distinct from OOC leadership, freeing officers and even the GM to RP less powerful characters. For example, consider the process of becoming Khan (the leader of the military):

Once per week, each player can declare Naqam (ritual combat - literally 'righteous vengeance'), arranging for a duel with the current Khan before the Saturday of that week. The Khan must accept all such challenges. Any players that defeat the Khan before Saturday will be added to the list of Aspirants. Aspirants can then duel each other Aspirant only once that week, gaining a point if they win. On Saturday, the points for all Aspirants are tallied. The Aspirant with the most points becomes the new Khan, and in the case of a tie must duel to decide the victor.

The Khan is a military leader by divine right and will of Gaea as expressed through Naqam. They command armies in battle ICly, and their RP-PVP events have priority over other events. They answer only to the High Lord in charge of the civil government.

ICly, what is the history of your guild?

When war broke out following the death of the Greatmother Gaea, several former priestesses of the Fallen Lady banded together to transform their temple into Gaea's Haven - a place of refuge in her memory. Over time, a hybrid paramilitary-democratic system of checks and balances was established with the purpose of defending the refugees, ensuring that all who sought refuge could find it, and securing the souls increasingly used as currency for safekeeping. The unique position as a neutral entity has earned them relative peace in the Eternal Kingdoms, but also the secret ire of most of the Pantheon. Today many of their members are treated with diplomatic respect for their impartiality in the public forums of the Eternal Kingdoms...and killed on sight for it in the Dying Worlds.

The increasing casualties in their mission have caused recently elected High Lord Kalai to restructure the military and institute the law of Naqam, establishing Divine Right to Rule the military through ceremonial duels. Though many silently doubt these actually represent the will of the Fallen Lady, none can deny their effectiveness in maintaining the martial prowess needed to secure a path for refugees.

ICly, what are the purpose and objectives of your guild as a whole?

Overarching purpose:
To honor the memory of our Fallen Lady, the Greatmother Gaea.

Objectives:
1) We will chronicle the history of the Dying Worlds, preserving the artifacts and tales of the innocent and the fallen. We will commemorate the accomplishments of the Crows, for good or ill - even those we have openly opposed. History is sacrosanct - all should be remembered as it was, as impartially as possible. Then too will Gaea be remembered.

2) We will defend all worlds from the War of the Gods as much as we are able, and bring a swift end to those who would destroy entire realms solely to fuel conflict in the Heavens. If necessary, we will secure peace and souls through strength of arms. We will provide save refuge for any that seek it, and secure holdings on the worlds we can for those who seek such refuge to claim it.

3) If there is no alternative, we will ease or hasten the passing of these worlds, rather than have innocents reaped to fuel the warring of the Eternal Kingdoms or lost to the Hunger. Deny the remaining gods as many souls from these worlds as possible, lest their essences be used for war.

4) We will trade for the souls of the fallen, now used ignobly as currency by the Pantheon. We will secure as many as possible to our care.

I'm not a combatant, but love RP. Can I still join?

Absolutely! Our guild is an RP guild first, and although our military RP is a major part of what makes us unique, participation in Naqam or World PVP isn't a requirement. Rank advancement can be made purely through RP events as well, and ICly the guild has plenty of need for non-combatants. For instance, Collectors are merchants charged with the sacred duty of amassing as many of the souls used as currency in the Eternal Kingdoms as possible for their preservation. They must weigh the living costs of every transaction and respect the souls they trade, and by doing so honor the Fallen Lady.

What are some other standard IC roles in the guild?

Soldier - volunteer military combatants. Defenders of the Dying Worlds and protectors of Gaea's Haven. They can gain IC rank and engage in RP-PVP through participation and leadership in in-game events. They can also invoke the right of Naqam - ritual combat for temporary leadership as Khan of the military. The structure of Naqam is detailed under IC Leadership Roles: Khan.

Conscripts - non-volunteer military combatants. The people's militia of Gaea's Haven, called upon to support soldiers and protect the refuge in times of imminent attack. All able-bodied refugees are required to register as conscripts and may be called upon if Gaea's haven is attacked.

Collector - merchant, charged with the sacred duty of amassing as many of the souls used as currency in the Eternal Kingdoms as possible for their preservation. Must weigh the living costs of every transaction and respect the souls they trade.

Devotees - Non-combatant, Non-merchant servant of the Fallen Lady. Includes healers, magical entertainers, evangelicals of Gaea, and caretakers of souls now used as currency.

Refugees - Those who have sought a safe, neutral area to escape to in the Eternal Kingdoms.

How is the IC leadership organized?

Khan, IC Rank/Military

Determined by divine providence, as expressed by weekly ritual combat (duels): Once per week, players can declare Naqam (ritual combat - literally 'righteous vengeance'), arranging for a duel with the current Khan before the Saturday of that week. The Khan must accept all such challenges. Any players that defeat the Khan before Saturday will be added to the list of Aspirants. Aspirants can then duel each other Aspirant only once that week and gain a point if they win. On Saturday, the points for all Aspirants are tallied. The Aspirant with the most points becomes the new Khan, and in the case of a tie must duel to decide the victor.

The Khan is a military leader by divine right and will of Gaea. They command armies in battle ICly, and their RP-PVP events have priority over other events. They answer only to the High Lord in charge of the civil government.

Champion, IC Rank/Military
A title awarded to any former Khan. An IC mark of military prowess.

High Lord, IC Rank/Civilian
The IC leader of the guild, elected by popular vote every three months. Executive in charge of the civil government, that also has the power to declare war on other factions.

Loremaster: IC Rank/Civilian
Awarded to those who successfully reclaim historical artifacts from the Dying Worlds and commemorate the accomplishments of players from other guilds after the world is destroyed. They are chroniclers, preservers of lost history in the records of the Eternal Kingdoms.

How is the OOC leadership organized?

OOC Rank: Imperator
The GM, whose role is to ensure that other positions serve the cause of the guild and provide direction, discussion, or story during lulls in player RP. The Imperator is to be the final arbitrator during disputes between Counselors, to develop and maintain officer training materials for conflict resolution, and provide the tools for others to create RP or PVP experiences.

OOC Rank: Counselor:
Officers. They are expected to encourage RP-PVP experiences, arbitrate disputes between members, and screen new members before inviting them. Players must demonstrate mastery in conflict resolution by passing a training program and commit to serving the interests of other players before themselves to be considered for a Counselor position. Disputes between counselors should be handled privately out of consideration for others, and the Imperator is expected to arbitrate if necessary. In exchange for their service, Counselors have access to hidden forums that help develop the 'backdrop story' - the major arcs that are intended to inspire personal RP or guild RP events that players develop. Counselors also have a say in developing guild relations.

Further roles and/or specialized officer roles may be developed if the guild grows to the point where officers feel that this is necessary.

Non-officer OOC ranks are still a WIP, and this page will be updated later.

My questions weren't listed here. Where can I find some answers?
Either post here, or try the New Player Forums

How do I apply?
First, check out the Guild Rules in the New Player Forums. If you agree to them, sign with your name. Then fill out an application on the "Apply" link at the top of the page.

I heard your GM lives in Shanghai. Are you open to Chinese players?

We welcome anyone who wishes to apply, but applicants must be able to roleplay in English. English Language Learners are absolutely welcome if they are willing to participate.

How do you plan to avoid drama that comes with many RP guilds in similar MMOs?

We have a comprehensive strategy to ensure players enjoy their time together, including a set of guild rules that must be signed by applicants before their application is accepted, a clear scale of punishments for offenses, training materials for officers that include a short Conflict Resolution course with assessment (expected to be fully operational by June 1st), and new player guides that clarify common expectations on god-modding, character shields, and other universal RP conventions complete with good and bad examples sets.

What do you plan to do before Crowfall launches?

Our hope is that we can develop our newly-launched website and establish a core base of RP'ers before the game launches, as well as explore Beta 1 and 2 for those interested. To that end, we hope players can slowly establish backstories or engage in casual, forum RP until Beta. After that, we expect activity to increase.

Are you looking for Officers?

We are, although applications won't open until our 10 minute conflict resolution course opens.

Edit: Applications are now open, and the officers training course is now online. To apply for officership, first apply and be accepted as a member. The application links on the site will change once you become a member, opening up links to the conflict resolution materials and officer's application.

I have a guild already, but your group sounds awesome. can I still RP with you?

Absolutely! We plan to have open RP in our EK stronghold (ICly a sanctuary from the war dedicated to Gaea), are more than welcome to alts, and are always looking for affiliates from other guilds. Feel free to apply as an affiliate at our website

A well thought out RP guild WITH a chance for advancement! What is this madness?!

I've checked out your forums, and this looks like a really good plan. I am definitely interested, and am applying.

Although the guild is currently inactive until beta 2, there have been some updates behind the scenes:

New lore and more detailed RP history:

The Gaean Remnant, elements of the priesthood of Gaea, found themselves in a delicate political position after their prolonged period of mourning. The pantheon was at war, and all involved sought the endorsement of the pockets of former Gaean followers to justify military action. Instead, the Remnant opened their wooden chapel and surrounding areas  to refugees of the war in memory of the fallen diety - enabling any who wish to denounce the infighting of the pantheon to claim the fallen Gaea as their patron. The neutral stance vexed all parties involved - effectively 'stealing' followers from other dieties. Still, the situation demanded their overt support: even today, to oppose the memory of Gaea and thereby forfeit a claim to just cause remains political suicide.

Thus, Gaea's Haven - now an open refugee camp and minor religious site - has been spared the bulk of the warring of the gods. This seems to be changing quickly, however. For among those who claim Gaea's protection are those who would do so not out of respect for peace or need for safety, but out of a desire to free themselves from oversight and pursue power or forbidden knowledge.

To protect the increasingly threatened Haven from anonymous attacks of dieties who would make an example of any 'traitors' that would leave their faction, the Haven has adopted an increasingly martial demeanor.

High Lord Kalai, recently elected head of the Haven, has re-instituted the ancient tradition of Naqam to ensure battlefield readiness. According to this custom, members of the military can now demand a formal duel with the current Khan of the armed forces. Should divine right support their claim through strength of arms, they can secure power over the military. This has fueled rumors of conspiracy, with claims that outside gods might attempt to place those loyal to themselves among the refugees, join the military, and demand such a duel. Perhaps even worse, the policy and increasing readiness for war has eroded public support for the civilian leadership overnight.

Recently, the military arm of the Haven has imposed martial law on the outer city in response to a series of mysterious murders of former followers of Zaleena amongst the refugees. Rumors of the attackers' identity range from vengeful Zaleena devotees to patrons who would ruin the relative immunity of the Haven and claim the priesthood's endorsement by force.

Whatever the cause, terror has begun to take it's toll on the populace. Worse, the harvest of the farmlands surrounding the Haven has suddenly failed to produce anything - almost as though someone or something has cursed the land itself. With merchants of the Eternal Kingdom less than open to the idea of selling to those that defy the greater pantheon, members of the Haven could soon be forced into a more active role beyond the relative safety of the Kingdoms...

OOC updates:

I'll be entering the next combat test, and hopefully streaming for the guild. All members are welcome to post questions or things to stream on the forums (can't find a recording of the armor cycling for centaurs? Want a specific question answered? I should be able to make that happen).

Also, our EK now sports a Cathedral dedicated to Gaea, to fit with the RP theme of offering sanctuary for wartime refugees under the protection of the Fallen Lady.

There's never been a better time to jump in on the guild forums and apply. Help us create a new kind of RP community where IC ranks can truly be earned or lost through skill.

Do you guys stay in character even in comms?

For one thing, our guild hierarchy is separate from our in-character hierarchy, so there will be plenty of times when players are talking with officers OOC. Additionally, the guild is mostly meant to create opportunities to RP. Some of this is done through guild events managed by officers or the GM, but we're hoping that a lot of it will be just players having fun together because we collect people with similar interests. What this means is that we are very community driven, so we want friendships developing between our members, not just in game associations. We certainly won't stop you from having a normal chat with your guildmates.
