A change to our forums - Official discussion thread

Recommended Posts

5 dollar is less to some ppl and more to other. If I am spending 5 dollar on every web site I view so I can use whole web site, then I will have no more 5 dollar. Maybe this is future, but is not one I am liking.

This isn't just some website though and you're not really paying to post. You're paying to back the game. Posting is a perk just like any other perks that come with the packages.

Given we have limited resources, we'll devote some effort to see if we can convert people to new backers, but the majority of our efforts *during this time in development* is going to be focused on actual backers.  They paid for our time and attention.

This whole decision is not a small thing. I have to give it a night or ten to think about it.

However, even now i would like to remind you (ArtCraft as team in general) of something: You are not alone. We are no usual community. The most of us (now all of us *cough*) gave money to this company before there was anything but one video and some text (and maybe some former experience with some of you). We gave dedication for nothing especially tangible. We gave it just for you. Such a community is willing to help. Willing to be part of the whole process. No, not willing, mentally bound to.

Most companies are not used to use this force. If they ever tried to. Or even had the chance to. But there is an extreme amount of power and potential behind this. I do believe, that we have to change our view. We players allready did. The industry is one step behind. At least. We are not just cash cows. We are resources. Depending on our dedication. And this alpha community, it is dedicated.

It is a good thing, that you see that you have limited resources. And even more to talk about it this open. But to find a way to fill this hole by using (and moderating/channeling) the power of an alpha community, that would be something really, really special and extraordinary. And at least i cant wait to see the day, one company finds a way to unchain this power and use it for the benefits of itself, the game and the players.

Just my 2 cents for the moment.

I think this is a good decision.

Intellectual honesty is an applied method of problem solving, characterized by an unbiased, honest attitude, which can be demonstrated in a number of different ways:

  • One's personal beliefs do not interfere with the pursuit of truth;
  • Relevant facts and information are not purposefully omitted even when such things may contradict one's hypothesis;
  • Facts are presented in an unbiased manner, and not twisted to give misleading impressions or to support one view over another;
  • References, or earlier work, are acknowledged where possible, and plagiarism is avoided.

How much additional revenue do you expect to drive in from this process?

What kind of cost savings can your business expect to have by implementing this new idea?

1) Not much additional revenue at all, and frankly it's not even a factor in the decision.  If $5 pledge packages end up being popular, it will actually drive down our average per backer, which is not ideal.

2) Less employee and management attention spent on people with no stake in and/or interest in Crowfall succeeding; Priceless.  We've only got so much time and energy to build Crowfall and serve the community that will play it.  I want to spend those resources as effectively as possible.

I morn the loss of the great folks that contributed on the forums who are not backers, but there are already many vibrant Crowfall communities outside of the company website where they can continue to contribute if they are not ready to back us.  It's not like we limit the feedback we gather to only our site, but we do treat feedback here with more gravity because the people here are our backers.  Our commitment is to backers because they believed in us way before there was a finished game to buy, their pledge was a contract we are obligated to fulfill.

*stuff*

This last bit of info made me feel a lot better about the decision.

Also, the fact that so many of the folks who are backers already that this will not effect at all whom are showing concern should give you a warm and fuzzy as to the type of community you have here before you.

You mean now I have to back with my sockpuppets before I can sock up the forums with them?

Does this mean I have to be constructive in all forum sections now?

It is a good change. it protects the community and encourages the people which have not yet decided to support the game to do it.

Be what you want to be, you don't have to be a particular way.  You just have to live with the consequences.

My perspective:

  • Non-backers are not locked out.  Anyone can still read the forums.  For people with only casual interest, this isn't really a big deal.
  • ACE is a business.  I am a customer.  I want ACE building what their customers are willing to pay for.

Clearly it would be nice to include everyone, but fundamentally I see this as a non-issue.

Gordon Walton, so zen. No wonder why the Atarashi Kami fan club looks up to you.

Be not the sockpost, but the sockposter.
