Are we being too black and white with "MOBA"?

Recommended Posts

Some friends and I were echoing the worries of those concerned about MOBA style game play being the main tone of this game, when someone brought up that MOBA may just be an instanced element of the game play, where during a siege you send in a 'strike' team to do internal damage, making the siege a little easier on the outside forces. Likewise if the defending team won the skirmish it would reinforce their walls or something equally spiffy that would make the siege harder.

How would you feel about MOBA being a partial-mechanic instead of full canon? What would you want to see if that's the case?

While I think some are worried about MOBA character progression, I don't think any are worried about the actual game being anything like a MOBA from foundational standpoint.  I have no worries about it not being a MMORPG.  Although I would prefer a non-MOBA style of character advancement, I could adapt if the GvG meta-political game is bad ass.

the distinction between a MOBA avatar of a male badger man, whom has a default combat style and abilities inherit to the badger man archtype, and with badger man having exclusive use of badger man abilities (say all of that 3 times fast)

VS

making a female half-orc ranger with 30 points into faith (or whatever), focusing on utility spells

is a pretty pronounced distinction.

Personally character development, coming up with new builds, trying new combinations is a big part of my enjoyment as it pertains to MMOs, MOBA archtypes remove that element in favor of Pokemon style premade options which limits personal choice, creativity, and development.

imho

Now, there is nothing wrong with MOBA archtypes, in a MOBA setting. Smash through a match in a competitive arcade environment, cool, got it.

But in a persistant MMO world that is more than running a lane, I'd rather be able to independently develop a character of my own rather than be boxed into a rigid archtype.

I'm not a roleplayer, at all, but again people seem to be forgetting about the RPG element of MMORPG, in which MOBA archtypes are less compatible than traditional character creation and development.

The more I hear about what this community desires (and this is a very specialized community coming from a vairity of niche games) the more I'm sadly arriving at the conclusions that there will be a substantial incongruity between the wishful thinking of the community which gathered on this forum and what will be revealed at the end of the count down. We'll see. I hope I'm totally off base here.

I wouldn't mind if there were some MOBA mechanics. Primarily Skill shots.

Then again, I also like friendly fire and the drawbacks of just blowing AOEs all over the place without hitting friendlies.

I went into more on this about how I hate zergs and how friendly fire defeats them..  :P

Bring us some skill based combat!

Please?

Because mobas are 'fair'. They easily emulate combat making it simple to see success or failure.

I answered your question. Mobas are the most balanced type of game on the market besides shooters.

They have evolving metas because there will never be perfect balance in an online game.

With everything that has been revealed so far as well as the sparce hints we've gotten through text posts, there is no way that the main gameplay mechanic of Crowfall will be the MOBA style.

Is it possible that it could show up as a minigame or a small mechanic in some grander system? Yeah, sure, why not? There's no harm in that.  But there is a 0% chance that this game will be a MOBA.

I don't understand how anyone can think the gameplay will be MOBA based.

Yeah not seeing it either. Granted we haven't seen really anything yet but so far everything says MMORPG to me. Including the times it actually says MMORPG in varies announcements and such.

Plus I mean we see the character creation screen and the stats are pure MMO. So I guess its just wishful thinking on some posters parts. I would think the market already has enough mobas and they wouldn't have to hope a new MMO is somehow another moba game.

agreed.  forget about moba.  think more along the sb lines, and then worry about those faults.........though i think the devs will avoid sb faults like the plague as well.

ArtCraft knows what they are dangling in front of us.

Having played many games only to be disapointed, after waiting years for the Emu project to take off but then have it revealed as some bastardized version of Shadowbane, I hear of this, this conglomerate of developers and artists who have designed 3 of my most memerable games, working together to bring their vision to life without the fear of coorprate greed breathing down their necks.

This, so far sounds like a cocktail for success.  These people know what we crave, I can only hope, and trust in their delivery, as this will be my last hope for a game that rivals (or at least comes close to) Shadowbane.

Funny you used the term mini game.  Could you explain what you mean?  Back in July 2014 J Todd asked a question on his FB:

Following up on my housing question: not many people seemed to care about mini games. Have you tried them? Are they not compelling? Too hard to get enough people to participate? What's the deal?

And then followed up with another post clarifying the following day:

...on my last question: I was actually referring to multiplayer games, like "tag" -- not the little arcade games. should have been more clear!

I didn't give much thought to the question posed then.  I am now thinking back and trying to relate if his question has any impact at all in CF and what it is ( or we think it is ) an MMORPG.

The question you posed intrigues me "Is it possible that it could show up as a minigame or a small mechanic in some grander system? Yeah, sure, why not? "

I would like to hear more........

Maybe it not about the happy ending. Maybe it's about the story.

People are not asserting that the overall gameplay and world of Crowfall will be MOBA based. We know that Crowfall will be a persistant MMO world, and will contain some interesting survival elements and other aspects tied to long-term play, the MOBA element of which people are speaking is relegated to character creation and character advancement as opposed to traditional MMO character creation and advancement.

Don't scrutinize this chart too much, its more about the conceptual difference in design philosophy rather than a literal translation of principals. In a MOBA style character creation people are relegated to the Human Male Knight pokemon loadout with specific abilities rather than being able to make a Female, Orc, Thief, Strength-based, Crossbow specialist for instance. Thats what all the community concern is originating from, not that Crowfall will be lane running.
