Road to Combat Playtesting: Part 1 - Official discussion thread

Recommended Posts

Awesome stuff, I wish my new PC was ready for the action, but my test group probably won't be included til later on.

It's still nice to see all this progress after returning from vacation though :)

don't force me to play with randoms pls :(

Better - they build a system that forces you to play with your forum nemesis. >_> :)

This all looks fun! Makes me -almost- want to be in the earlier alpha; almost. I'm not the best person for testing out games, unfortunately! I always seem to run out of time. But this system seems to work out well for getting people to log on and get to help test the combat. I did realize how much infrastructure work would be needed to get alpha testers from all over to participate in testing! (Though I suppose I should have guessed at that.)

Actually, that raises a side point I'm very interested in which has larger ramifications than might be expected: How large is a "group" planned to be? I have very fond memories of DAoC 8v8's, and larger groups give you a more interesting decision space for group composition. In a 5 man group you have to figure 1 support, 1 tank, 1 MDPS, and 2 RDPS is the most likely build, with minor variations. With a larger group you have a lot more possible variance in constructing an effective team.

I think what I'd like to see in the session-based combat module is the ability to queue for either a 3v3 or a group-v-group, however large that is, and hopefully in the 8ish range rather than 5 or 6.

Looks good... hopefully people go in with a real tester's mindset... I know in landmark when we started combat testing many people had trouble understanding that SOE was trying to test certain aspects of their combat, some people were treating it like the game had already launched and that we should be worried about actual balance already.

I completely agree with you about the memories of 8-man groups.  However, 8-man is a little large.  But I also feel that the "norm" of 5-man is restrictive.  I think 6-7 would be a good fit for Crowfall.  That would provide you space for:

1-2 tank (3 total archetypes)

1-2 support (3 total)

2-3 damage dealers (4 total)

1-2 specialists (3 total)

I believe it was stated recently that ACE didn't want the promotion classes altering the base archetypes too much (no need to change gear types/stats, for example) so I didn't consider a big change in role from base archetype.  If that still happens then I guess these totals are thrown out the window.

Sorry you turned into a two-bit carebear whose feelings get hurt over forum banter.

The interface looks neat and not cluttered, I like that a lot.  :) The focussed test is what's needed imo. Lots of tests I've been in just basically have been 'play and test everything'. It was horrible. I think it's way better to get told and 'find bugs about this' and 'ignore this'.

A dedicated sub-forum just to give feedback about the specific tests would be preferable so it's not mixed with the normal clutter. But I'm sure they thought about that already.

Now where is that F5 key for my email inbox?!
