Dev Team's Balance Philosophy?

Recommended Posts

Haven't been on frequently enough to know if this was already asked.

Does the development team have any philosophy as far as correcting gameplay imbalances? From what I've seen, the game seems to be leaning more to Shadowbane's side, but SB and its ilk were dead and buried by the time I gained an interest in MMO's, so I don't particularly know how game balance situations were handled there.

Game is far off, of course, but was wondering if there's been a dialogue about it within the team.

I don't think anything that specific has been mentioned but hopefully it is done with a chisel instead of a sledgehammer

SB had a Class Advocate and Focus Group made up of community members.  Advocates helped new players on class specific forums and provided feedback to the dev team on balance and overall game direction.

Sometimes it worked, sometimes there was an agenda the FG couldn't comprehend (vampires) that were driven by dev/publisher requirements and politics.

I think we made some progressive balance changes as the game went on with devs listening and not just blindly nerfing/buffing things.

I hope a similar system is used for this game.

To add to agelmar's statements, the SB team historically had no problems with making required adjustments. The beta iterations and post-release changes came in quickly and at that time there was very little discussion about the changes. If it broke an intended gameplay mechanic it was fixed.

I personally didn't participate in the later stages, the more democratic development process, but it seems as though it was quite effective from talking with friends who stuck with SB.

I remember when the scout advocate told me scouts were fine, just ask your guild leader for some FC gear...

Was that the one before me or was I being a hooligan?
