Can Shadowbane Look Good? I Tried To Find Out..

Using ReShade, DSR and some ArcanePref.cfg tweaks I decided to see how pretty I could make Shadowbane look. It is trying so hard to look good, haha.

EDIT2: Back to my default 1600x900 window. Um, I don't think that Screen Space Ambient Occlusion likes SB's engine. O_o (Tried ReShade with MasterEffect shaders instead of SweetFX. It's showing through the UI.)

Better colors can only do so much.  The game needs new shaders and models that don't have individually segmented body parts before it even starts looking like more modern day RPGs.

looks sharper, but cleaner? no.

Maybe a side by side comparison might be needed.  Looks about what I remember it.

Pay close attention to the character model itself for the biggest difference imo. Everything looks cleaner and more vivid but not by a whole hell of a lot tbh. Other than level of detail on the toon itself I notice a lot of refinement on light placement/shadows--the edges are softer and more evenly diffused rather than a starker contrast between light/dark.

 

That said, I'm generally a fan of SB's graphics. They're not even in the same stratosphere with anything from the last ~8 years really but even still, for whatever reason, I like the visuals for more reason than simple nostalgia.

i agree. i think sb graphics were just barely stylized enough to look good despite being 'bad'

Trivia: The Asian publisher, EnTranz, insisted that the game be compatible with windows 98 since (they said) so many of the popular game cafes used that OS.

In ReShade+SweetFX I enabled: SMAA, HDR, Vibrance, Curves and Dither. I forced 16x Anisotropic Filtering, Anti Aliasing Transparancy 2x supersample, High Quality texture filtering, both texture optimizations off and lod bias clamped.

But as some may have noticed you can only do so much in for this game, lol! The HDR and Vibrance settings probably made the biggest difference.

never cared about the graphics. Going from SB to WoW and GW made you realize how bad the graphics were when you actually played "newer" mmos. I've played SB since GW and WoW and still don't care about SB's graphics. I spend about all of 10 minutes taking screenshots in a beautiful game and then go about my gameplay.

Shadowbane never lacked for pixel density, I think it was the first MMO to use normal mapping what it lacked was a talented artist. and a coder that could make SB compatible with diectX 9 drivers it was stuck on DX7

SB uses OpenGL :)

There was a point when you could turn your settings right up and take some awesome screenshots. Then they pwnd the graphics to reduce lag, and it's been impossible ever since.
